According to MATA’s website, trolleys run 6 AM-11:45 PM Mon-Fri, with 12 minutes between trolleys to 6 PM, then 25 minutes between trolleys until the end of the day. Saturday trolleys run 6 AM-1 AM with 15 minute intervals, and Sundays they run 8:30 AM-6:30 PM with 25 minute intervals.

MATA also has a bus terminal at Main and Shadyac (formerly North Parkway). Adult fare is $1.50 for city buses. You can view schedules and routes on MATA’s website. This is the cheapest way to get around town, but I’d suggest avoiding the buses if at all possible. The schedules are pretty unreliable and you’re likely to make some interesting new friends as you ride (by “interesting” I mean “crazy”).

The two major taxi numbers are 323-3333 and 577-7777. Getting a cab from Downtown to other parts of Memphis is pretty easy – if you just walk along Second between Union and Beale you’ll likely see several of them parked and waiting for fares. However, getting a cab from other parts of the city back to Downtown is quite a bit more of a hassle. I’ve heard horror stories of people waiting an hour and a half for a cab to pick them up in Midtown, only 3 miles to the east. One workaround is to tip your driver well on the way out of Downtown and get his or her personal cell number to call for the ride back.

There’s an Enterprise Rent-A-Car at 426 Union, just east of Danny Thomas Boulevard.

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans passenger route runs from Chicago to Memphis to New Orleans and back. Trains depart from Central Station at Main and GE Patterson. More info on the City of New Orleans

There’s a Greyhound bus station on Union just east of Third. If you like meeting new friends with interesting habits (and by that I mean “crackheads”), this is the mode of transportation for you.

The airport is about 7 miles to the southeast. It’s a 15 minute drive if traffic is moving. If you’re staying in a hotel they may have a free shuttle to the airport, ask at the front desk.

A common question is, “How do I get to the interstate?” Easy all-purpose answer – keep heading west until you hit Riverside Drive. Turn left to go south and hit I-55; turn right to go north and hit I-40.

The trolley line Downtown runs three routes: Riverside Loop – north on Main Street from GE Patterson Avenue to Auction, west to Riverside, south on Riverside and then Tennessee Street to GE Patterson, west on GE Patterson to Main Main Street Only – north on Main Street from GE Patterson to Auction, then back south … Continue reading “Transportation in Downtown Memphis”

<!-- WP Super Cache is installed but broken.
