{"id":2374,"date":"2008-07-26T11:45:51","date_gmt":"2008-07-26T16:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/?p=2374"},"modified":"2008-07-26T11:45:51","modified_gmt":"2008-07-26T16:45:51","slug":"daddy-mack-blues-band-dvd-release-tonight-at-the-center-for-southern-folklore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/26\/daddy-mack-blues-band-dvd-release-tonight-at-the-center-for-southern-folklore\/","title":{"rendered":"Daddy Mack Blues Band DVD release tonight at the Center for Southern Folklore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re into the blues, check out the Center for Southern Folklore, on the Main Street Mall just south of Gayoso, tonight at 8 PM.\u00a0 The Daddy Mack Blues Band&#8217;s new documentary DVD, by Jim O&#8217;Donnell, will be screened at 8 and the band will perform at 9.\u00a0 $5 cover.\u00a0 Details below, pasted from an e-mail they sent me:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>The<\/span><\/strong><span> <\/span><strong><span>Daddy Mack Blues Band<\/span><\/strong><span> and cinematographer <strong>Jim O\u2019Donnell<\/strong> celebrate the official DVD release of \u201c<strong>Plain Man Blues<\/strong>,\u201d the Daddy Mack documentary that premiered last fall at the Indie Memphis Film Festival.\u00a0 The fun starts Saturday, July 26 at 8:00 p.m. with a screening of the documentary followed by a blistering set by the Daddy Mack Blues Band <\/span><span>at the Center for Southern Folklore Store located at 123 S. Main @ The Peabody Place Trolley Stop.\u00a0 Admission for the DVD party is free while the cover for the live concert afterward is only $5.00.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>DVDs of \u201cPlain Man Blues\u201d are now available for sale in the Folklore Store for $18.99.\u00a0 You can also pre-order your copy by emailing <a href=\"mailto:store@southernfolklore.org\" target=\"_blank\"><span>store@southernfolklore.org<\/span><\/a> or calling the Folklore Store @ 525-3655.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPlain Man Blues\u201d traces the late blooming career of Daddy Mack Orr who taught himself how to play guitar at the age of 45 after years of picking cotton, working construction and starting his own auto repair shop.\u00a0 Now in his sixties, Mack makes his living fixing cars by day while playing the blues music he loves nights and weekends.\u00a0 His talent was apparent early on when he joined the legendary Memphis-based blues band, <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Fieldstones.<\/strong> As the leader of his own band, Mack and his crew have entertained audiences around the world from fish fries in Paris, TN to music festivals in Paris, France.\u00a0 Along the way, he has achieved success as a recording artist with three consecutive albums in the Top Ten of the national blues charts \u2013 \u201cFix It When I Can,\u201d \u201cSlow Ride\u201d and \u201cBluestones.\u201d\u00a0 Even so, life as a musician doesn\u2019t come easy and Mack is still waiting to hit the big time.\u00a0 \u201cPlain Man Blues\u201d shows what it takes for Mack to make it as a blues artist and the road he took to get there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The creative force behind \u201cPlain Man Blues\u201d is <strong>Jim O\u2019Donnell<\/strong>, an independent Memphis filmmaker.\u00a0 He produced and directed the award-winning documentary<strong> \u201cRay4theNBA<\/strong>,\u201d which aired nationally on College Sports Television, as well as, being screened at film festivals throughout the country.\u00a0 He has produced several Memphis-centric documentaries such as \u201c<strong>The Party Ain&#8217;t Stopped Yet<\/strong>,\u201d about the closing and re-opening of The Center for Southern Folklore and <strong>\u201c75 Years of Pink<\/strong>,\u201d the history of Memphis\u2019 Pink Palace Museum, as well as the fiction film<strong> \u201cPresumed Dead<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 O&#8217;Donnell has also been nominated for a Regional Emmy for his work as a photojournalist.\u00a0 He is a graduate of The University of Memphis Department of Communication&#8217;s Graduate Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For more info on Daddy Mack and \u201cPlain Man Blues\u201d, check out: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;
