{"id":25103,"date":"2021-09-06T05:17:46","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T10:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/?p=25103"},"modified":"2021-09-06T05:17:46","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T10:17:46","slug":"labor-day-update-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/2021\/09\/06\/labor-day-update-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor Day update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ah, the sounds of Downtown on the Sunday night of a long holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>First I heard a cacophony of car horns that went on for at least 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard tires squealing, followed by the sound of a police cruiser&#8217;s horn, then a police siren.<\/p>\n<p>About 12:45 I heard women arguing with each other, and then a single gunshot.<\/p>\n<p>I went out for a few hours for brunch yesterday, but I decided to stay home last night. I didn&#8217;t want to be in the middle of all that &#8211; even though the place I would have gone was a mere three-block walk down a pedestrian mall.<\/p>\n<p>If you still haven&#8217;t got the vaccine for COVID, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymemphian.com\/section\/business\/article\/23940\/covid-19-q-and-a-jon-mcullers-william-schaffner\">please read this Daily Memphian interview<\/a>. It&#8217;s with Dr. Jon McCullers, CEO of the College of Medicine at UT Health Sciences Center, and Dr. William Schaffner, infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A few quotes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>McCullers: &#8220;We haven\u2019t seen a vaccine that\u2019s worked this well in a long, long time.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>McCullers: &#8220;The combination of effectiveness and safety, we\u2019ve never seen before in a vaccine like this.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Schaffner: &#8220;We had a backlog of science that had been developing over 15 years.
