{"id":2682,"date":"2008-10-22T14:40:38","date_gmt":"2008-10-22T19:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/?p=2682"},"modified":"2008-10-22T14:40:38","modified_gmt":"2008-10-22T19:40:38","slug":"a-look-at-this-weeks-memphis-flyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/22\/a-look-at-this-weeks-memphis-flyer\/","title":{"rendered":"A look at this week&#8217;s Memphis Flyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Court Square laptopping experiment didn&#8217;t work out.\u00a0 Not because of the bums, because it was so bright outside.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t see my computer screen, although I could see the dust on my computer screen quite well.\u00a0 After only a few minutes I gave up and walked home.<\/p>\n<p>I may not be a big fan of Sarah Palin, but I do admire her great fashion sense.\u00a0 Check out the awesome scarf she&#8217;s wearing in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2008\/10\/22\/83752\/893\/194\/638476\">this picture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see what&#8217;s going on in the Flyer this week:<\/p>\n<p>p. 22:\u00a0 Good article on what will become of the old Marine Hospital next to the National Ornamental Metal Museum.\u00a0 They plan on turning it into some really unique condos, and reconnecting it to the rest of Downtown, so that there&#8217;s an easier way to get there than getting on I-55 and taking the Metal Museum exit.\u00a0 I toured these buildings at the Memphis Flyer&#8217;s Best Of party, and they are very, very cool.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re thinking of buying a condo (and you can still find someone who&#8217;ll give you a mortgage in this economy) you need to check this place out.<\/p>\n<p>p. 26:\u00a0 There will be a walking tour of Cotton Row this Saturday from 1 to 3 PM, given by eight former Cotton Row workers.\u00a0 More info on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memphiscottonmuseum.org\/\">the Cotton Museum&#8217;s website<\/a>.\u00a0 Great chance to learn some Memphis history.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a Southeastern Indian Heritage Festival at Chucalissa Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>p. 30:\u00a0 THE DEMPSEYS AT HUEY&#8217;S THIS SUNDAY!!!!!!!\u00a0 (Hey, don&#8217;t forget, it&#8217;s Caps Lock Day, I&#8217;m entitled to do that.)\u00a0 No place is better for catching the Dempseys up close and personal.\u00a0 Show starts at 8:30.<\/p>\n<p>p. 46:\u00a0 Info on the grand opening party at Orleans on Front (formerly Cayenne Moon) Thursday and Friday nights.\u00a0 Both nights there will be free food and *drinks (heck if I know what the asterisk means) from 8 to 9 PM both nights.\u00a0 I wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up?<\/p>\n<p>Also on p. 46, a great article on Bardog Tavern, with an interview with Aldo Demartino, its owner.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got to check out Bardog if you haven&#8217;t already&#8230; it&#8217;s exactly what a neighborhood bar should be.\u00a0 I&#8217;m in there most every night.<\/p>\n<p>p. 55:\u00a0 There&#8217;s a unit on the 9th floor of the Claridge being rented out for $825\/month.\u00a0 It&#8217;s unusual to see a condo unit rented out for under a grand.\u00a0 I hear this building was refurbished when it went condo and the units are super nice.\u00a0 Someone needs to jump on this.<\/p>\n<p>p. 57:\u00a0 Another rental bargain, a loft on the first floor of the Paperworks for $950 a month.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 1050 SF unit.\u00a0 I think I may have been in this one before.\u00a0 It&#8217;s super, super nice and I can&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s renting for less than a thousand bucks.\u00a0 Again, someone needs to jump on this.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, where did Free Will Astrology go?\u00a0 That&#8217;s the one astrology column I actually read.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the link to their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freewillastrology.com\/horoscopes\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All right, I&#8217;m getting back to work now.\u00a0 Doing some stuff with the Zend Framework for PHP, in order to prepare for incoming freelance work, and to prepare myself for possible future projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Court Square laptopping experiment didn&#8217;t work out.\u00a0 Not because of the bums, because it was so bright outside.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t see my computer screen, although I could see the dust on my computer screen quite well.\u00a0 After only a few minutes I gave up and walked home.
