{"id":5965,"date":"2010-02-21T10:38:18","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T16:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/?p=5965"},"modified":"2010-02-21T10:38:18","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T16:38:18","slug":"lunch-vs-brunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paulryburn.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/21\/lunch-vs-brunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Lunch vs. brunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday, I was hanging out at the Saucer as usual, and I got into a discussion with my friend Kacy.\u00a0 I thought the discussion would make a good Sunday morning topic.\u00a0 The topic is, what&#8217;s the difference between lunch and brunch?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the hours.\u00a0 Brunch on Sunday usually runs from 11 to 3, or maybe 10:30 to 3 &#8211; hours that are normally considered lunch hours.<\/p>\n<p>Is the food the difference?\u00a0 I know that &#8220;brunch&#8221; is &#8220;breakfast + lunch,&#8221; but when I go to the Majestic for brunch, I usually order off the lunch menu.\u00a0 Meanwhile, there are places that will serve breakfast food at lunchtime &#8211; Blue Plate, Denny&#8217;s, IHOP.\u00a0 People usually don&#8217;t think of those places as &#8220;brunch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, Kacy and her friends were out on a weekend day, looking for a place to eat lunch, meaning &#8220;let&#8217;s get a quick bite to eat.&#8221;\u00a0 They couldn&#8217;t find anyplace they liked, so Kacy suggested, &#8220;Let&#8217;s do brunch instead.&#8221;\u00a0 So they went to a restaurant &#8211; I forget where, think she may have said Boscos &#8211; and they sat down.\u00a0 Kacy ordered lunch.<\/p>\n<p>And a mimosa.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the difference.\u00a0 Brunch is not really lunch + breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s lunch + ALCOHOL.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we need to refine this idea further.\u00a0 Is lunch + beer brunch?\u00a0 This to me seems to be a gray area.\u00a0 Sometimes on a Saturday afternoon I&#8217;ll get hungry and stop by the Flying Fish to eat.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll pull a can of PBR out of the refrigerator to purchase as my beverage.\u00a0 That to me seems more like lunch than brunch.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you&#8217;re having a mimosa or Bloody Mary, it&#8217;s almost certainly brunch.\u00a0 It seems like other mixed drinks would fall into this category too.\u00a0 My friend John D enjoys a screwdriver with brunch every once in a while.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, that makes me think even more.\u00a0 Most of the time, John D doesn&#8217;t order food, but just the screwdriver.\u00a0 Even without the food, is it still brunch?<\/p>\n<p>Just something to think about this fine Sunday morning.\u00a0 Better get out there and enjoy it before the rain moves in!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday, I was hanging out at the Saucer as usual, and I got into a discussion with my friend Kacy.\u00a0 I thought the discussion would make a good Sunday morning topic.\u00a0 The topic is, what&#8217;s the difference between lunch and brunch?
