Monday update

I got to see The Kent, the relatively new (I think it’s been open about a year) event space in Uptown yesterday. It’s at the corner of Keel Avenue and North Front Street, and derives its name from that intersection (KE-el and Fro-NT).

What a beautiful space. The Kent is an old brick warehouse that takes up most of the block. It’s an open space for the most part, two stories tall, with lots of big, high windows providing gorgeous ambient light.

We were there to celebrate the life of a member of our Downtown family who left us way too early. Friends and relatives spoke. There was a slide show cast onto one of the upper beams where everyone in the room could see it easily.

About 70 people showed up. There was a food buffet, banquet seating, and a display of the departed’s favorite items. The Kent handled it all comfortably. In fact, it felt like there were entire sections of the facility we barely used, and that another 30-50 people could have shown up and it still wouldn’t have felt packed.

There was plenty of parking on the streets surrounding The Kent. You can tell the area was a warehouse district in the not-too-distant past. Plenty of buildings from that era survive, standing alongside new houses and apartment complexes.

Now, let’s answer the question that was on my mind and I’m sure is on some of yours… Is The Kent walkable from the Downtown core?

My answer is yes and no.

Yes, if you’re up for a long walk. I pre-gamed at the Blind Bear, and would have had no problem with a 35-or-so-minute walk north to the memorial service on a beautiful 75-degree early November day.

Then again, I know Downtowners who think three blocks is too far to walk… people who say, “Okay, we’re going to finish our drinks at Blind Bear and then head to Bardog… who’s driving? Or should we call an Uber?” For those people, The Kent is not walkable from the core.

I would be less likely to make a walk to The Kent after dark. I listen to the police scanner now and then and Uptown is still a neighborhood in transition, and gets a little “iffier” the farther north you go. That’s a shame because I would love to make some walks to the Grind City Brewing Co. taproom which is about a half-mile north of The Kent.

Here’s a Downtown dining PRO TIP: This week I expect that a number of food trucks, serving a diverse array of dishes but with an emphasis on soul food, will set up on Exchange Ave. between Main and Second. The trucks will mainly be there to serve COGIC convocation attendees, but they certainly don’t require proof of attendance to sell to you. Those of you who work in the city/county government buildings or at St. Jude will likely be a short walk away from some really yummy lunch.

Weather: Memphis temps are expected to be highs in the low 80s/lows in the mid 60s with no chance of rain, then a cold front comes through Thursday and we’ll be back to more seasonable readings of low 60s highs/low 40s lows. Get outside while the weather is beautiful! Those of you who have “use ‘em or lose ‘em by December 31” sick days should consider developing a cough this week.

Quote of the weekend: “In my family, you get one ‘shitting your pants’ a year.” – overheard at Blind Bear Sunday afternoon

Clickbait headline of the weekend, from Beale Street Bears: 3 Grizzlies who could shockingly be traded after 0-5 start to season. I’ll go ahead and spoil it for you: Kennard, Ziaire, Brandon Clarke – none of which would be “shocking.” A couple of things:

  • The Grizzlies are no longer 0-5. They now own a 1-win season, having bested Portland on the road last night.
  • The only two Grizzlies who should be untouchable in trade talks this year – Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. – contributed 30 and 27 to that win.

There I said it. I’d trade Ja, a young talent, and a first for a player of comparable ability who’s a good fit for the team.

Memphis returns home to host the Miami Heat Wednesday at 7 PM.

In case you’re wondering: Here’s a story about the origin of Rip City as the Portland Trail Blazers’ nickname

The NCAA will announce its bracket for its 2023 women’s soccer tournament today at 3. Congrats to the Memphis Tigers, who captured the American Conference’s automatic bid to the tournament. The Tigers are 18-1 and ranked 8th nationally.

Today is National Nachos Day. I’m gonna be different today and recommend the Bluff City Nachos from fast-casual Asian restaurant STIX: Crispy wonton chips topped with baked spicy crab, diced avocados, diced jalapeno, and sweet soy. Say hello to Mylon while you’re there – STIX is his day job when he’s not DJing.

There was a shooting near 508 South Main around 11 Saturday night, leaving a man in critical condition. Witnesses saw an Infiniti fleeing the scene. Bullet holes cause $5000 worth of damage to Downtown Yoga.

There’s an office/accounts payable clerk position available Downtown. 9 AM-3 PM, $20/hour, through Adecco. Must be familiar with basic accounting principles.

That’s it. Back tomorrow with more news.

Sunday update

I heard about a dozen gunshots at 12:11 this morning, a couple of hours before the time change. The shots sounded way off in the distance from where I live near Madison and Main, to the south-southeast. So it’s possible the shots were fired on or near Beale Street.

I couldn’t find anything on the local news sites about gunfire in that area. However, people did report shots fired on G.E. Patterson Avenue overnight.

Mark and Charlie, the owners of LGBTQ-friendly club Atomic Rose, posted the following letter to social media this weekend:

“The past four years have been a wonderful and uplifting experience for both of us. Through Atomic Rose we have met some of the best people that Memphis has to offer. However, we are in our 60s and 70s and we feel that the time is right to let this business go to one or more people that are younger and have the connections and energy to take Atomic Rose to the next level.

We have done our best and hope we have gained the respect and trust of the LGBTQ+ community. Charlie’s dad is in his 90s and soon he will have family issues to address. He will stay on as an advisor if needed to make a smooth transition possible. We hope new owners will keep the same format and just add to the business and continue to make it the premier LGBTQ+ venue in the South.”

Inquiries about buying the business can be sent to Atomicrosememphis@gmail.com.

Going to Memphis Grilled Cheese Fest today at the Hi-Tone? Be sure to say hello to my friends on the Local on Main team, competing as Three Swiss Mafia.

Amid all the buzz about Grilled Cheese Fest, it almost totally slipped my mind that we have a celebration of life for one of our Downtown family today. I haven’t asked permission from her actual family to post details, so I’ll just say that it’s someone we lost back in September and that the details are on her Facebook page.

Bardog has announced a beer dinner for December 6. I’ll try to find out more details this week.

Robusto by Havana Mix’s CigaRobb will have a November 2 Remember birthday bash Saturday, November 11 from 7-11 PM. Live music, drink specials, and giveaways – plus a special gift for all November birthdays.

Memphis Tigers football improved to 7-2  with a 59-50 win over South Florida yesterday. Next for the Tigers is a first-ever game vs. Charlotte.

The Grizzlies play a road game against Portland tonight at 8.

The Memphis Tigers men’s basketball team hosts Jackson State Monday at 7 at FedExForum.

People are asking me to say a few words about the Memphis restaurant & hospitality industry and COGIC, which returns its annual convocation to Memphis this week. I’m not comfortable doing that because

  • I don’t work in those industries
  • Even if I did, no one elected me a spokesman for those industries
  • I personally have never had any memorable interactions with COGIC convocation attendees

However, like most Memphians, I have heard the stories. If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, I recommend you get on a threaded-discussion site called Reddit and search for keywords like memphis, cogic, server, restaurant. My guess is, you’ll have hours of reading to do in the search results.

That’s it for today. Probably back tomorrow with more news.

Paul’s Picks: Downtown Dining Week 2023

Downtown Dining Week is Monday, November 6 through Sunday, November 12. It’s your chance to try something new and different. Many restaurants have multiple courses and give you the ability to pick & choose from options.

The suggested price for dinner is $20.23, but not all restaurants followed the suggestion. READ THE FINE PRINT on the menus so there aren’t any surprises when the check arrives.

Nearly 60 restaurants are participating. Don’t have time to read 60 menus? No problem – I read them for you. Below are Paul’s Picks, which check one or more of the following boxes:

  • A good value for the money
  • Unique/interesting
  • Multiple options
  • I’ve had the item in the past and can personally vouch for it

117 Prime – Braised beef brisket and potatoes au gratin? Yes please.

Arnold’s – Baby back ribs AND catfish. All of the things.

Automatic Slim’s – Three courses for $20.23. That chicken strip dipped in waffle batter sounds like a yummy first course.

Blind Bear – I’ve tried a couple of bites of that coffee-encrusted ribeye. Normally I’m not even a fan of coffee, but it really brings out the flavor of the steak.

Catherine & Mary’s – Fried spaghetti. Yum yum!

Local on Main – Buffalo fried catfish and jalapeno cheddar grits. I’ve had this on special before and it is very good. I don’t know why this isn’t on the DDW website, but they tell me it comes with a starter of crab-stuffed deviled eggs and a dessert of fried Oreos.

South of Beale – You have options here. I would start with General Tso’s Cauliflower, then move on to a curry chicken bowl, and wrap it up with that Jack & Coke bread pudding.

A few reminders to make sure everyone has a fantastic Downtown Dining Week:

Your servers are gonna be busy. Not only will it be DDW, but a major convention will be in town. Please be understanding if it takes them an extra minute or two to get to you.

If you can’t make a restaurant reservation, please call and cancel so that someone else can have the table.

It is not appropriate to ask for modifications, substitutions, or additions to DDW menu selections. If you feel the need to do any of that, order off the restaurant’s regular menu instead.

Tip generously. $6 to $7 sounds about right for a $20.23 meal. More than that if you feel a server went above and beyond to take care of you.

Bon appetit!

Thursday update #2

Yahoo! Sports recently published a story about the rise and fall of Mikey Williams, the highly acclaimed prospect who was set to join the University of Memphis basketball team this fall. Until he gets gun charges near his San Diego home cleared up, Williams is taking online classes with the U of M but is not allowed to do anything with the team.

So, I read the article profiling Williams, and man… issues and red flags galore. Having to keep this guy at arm’s length may well be the best thing to happen to Tigers basketball this year.

From the CA: Here’s what we know about Madison Tavern, the new restaurant going into the old Local on the Square location. It will be run by the folks who run Downtown’s Local on Main.

Speaking of Local on Main, this week’s special is chicken teriyaki over a bed of fried rice. I had some for lunch today. Yummy! $14.

Memphis Grilled Cheese Festival returns to Crosstown this Sunday. General admission tickets will be $5.

The Memphis Grizzlies and free agent center Bismack Biyombo have agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with $1 million guaranteed.

The city is scrapping plans for a boat dock at Greenbelt Park.

Friday is National Sandwich Day.

I let one of the girls who works at the Blind Bear French-braid my hair at an after-hours gathering. “Now I look like Hop Sing,” I commented as I held up a mirror to the back of my head. Not one person in the room got the reference.

Momma’s is now doing Open-Oke on Tuesday nights beginning at 7. It’s a combination of open mic, stand-up comedy, and karaoke.

Jon Hay plays Slider Inn Downtown Friday at 8.

St. Jude seeks a senior social media specialist.

MLK50 will host a spades tournament and game night Friday at the Balinese Ballroom in The Pinch.

Friday will be Ladies’ Night at Eight & Sand Lounge in Central Station Hotel. The event will feature Quinnette with Alpha Whiskey, Nya Sanders, and Nico.

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks come to FedExForum Saturday and Sunday.

That’s it for now. Back soon with a Paul’s Picks post for Downtown Dining Week.

Thursday update

0-5. Damn, Grizzlies. Yay for signing Bismack Biyombo, but is he gonna be enough?

Mayor Jimbo from Mempho will release the Tigers at the University of Memphis’ homecoming football game this Saturday vs. South Florida.

The basketball Tigers host LeMoyne-Owen tonight at 7 at FedExForum. The DM has a preview.

Today is Cookie Monster Day. Did you know that in 1967, two years before the debut of Sesame Street, Cookie Monster appeared in an IBM training video?

Celebrations for International Stout Day today just don’t get any more classic than a Guinness at Downtown’s Irish pub The Brass Door.

Today is also National Deviled Egg Day.

Injured Grizzlies center Steven Adams is starring in a milk commercial.

College basketball coach Bob Knight has passed away. Best known for his years at Indiana, Knight also coached at Army and Texas Tech. Knight coached future Duke coach Coach K at Army.

Guns were stolen from cars during the Grizzlies game Monday.

The Memphis Redbirds and Memphis 901 FC seek a director of special events.

The National Civil Rights Museum seeks a full-time tour guide.

Yesterday was a weird day. I could have taken things in a bad direction. But I got an intuition that said, “GO BE WITH YOUR FRIENDS. RIGHT NOW.” And I did and they got me through it. Much love to the people who were there for me.

Blog publishing schedule may be weird for a while but I will try to be back tomorrow with more news.
