Starting off today’s post with several pieces of beer-related news. If you like stouts, the Flying Saucer is the place to be tonight at 6. They will be tapping the cask version of Memphis Made Brewing Co.’s Drew’s Day Off. Only two of these casks were produced, the other being tapped at the Saucer in Cordova at 5.

Brew for a Cure is tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Cadre Building, raising money to fight Type 1 diabetes. The event will feature beers from local breweries High Cotton, Memphis Made, and Ghost River, as well as regional breweries Tennessee Brew Works and Sweetwater. Food provided by the Arcade, Ciao Bella, La Hacienda, One and Only BBQ, Tzaiki’s, and Woodridge Farms. Live music by the Super 5. Silent auction as well. Suggested attire is “Friday Night Out,” whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.

Another beer-related fundraiser happens Sunday at the High Cotton taproom. The Brew Movement Against Mutiple Sclerosis Fall Mixer runs from noon to 6 and is intended to raise money and awareness for the Mid-South Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis society. Your $5 entry fee gets you discounted High Cotton pints, homebrew samples, a silent auction, and music by the Penny Kings. The El Taco Mero food truck will be on site.

Gould’s has proposed a patio at its new location at the southwest corner of Main and Union, but the DMC’s Design Review Board has concerns that it would not be used. What are they talking about? Of course it would be used! That crazy homeless woman who shouts random things at passersby would use it all the time, I am sure.

South Main Sushi and Grill now has its own Facebook page that you can “Like” to keep up with news from the restaurant.

University of Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch is one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Job news: Aerotek is having a job fair tomorrow to fill several hundred warehouse positions in Memphis and North Mississippi. The fair is at 1255 Lynnfield Rd Suite 110, Memphis, Tn 38119 from 9 AM to 2 PM and they will be interviewing and making offers on the spot. They are looking for all levels in the warehouse. The Grizzlies play Portland on TNT tonight. 9:30 tip-off time, which means midnight bedtime if you plan to stay up and watch.

I’m going to start off this post with a link to a post on Loving My Memphis: Just Say No to Boring Dates. They suggest a date for Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and absolutely nailed it. Stop 1 is Hung Over Like a Bear brunch at the Blind Bear. They point out that there are couches so you can have an intimate setting for two if you don’t want to sit at the bar, and that “If you go on Sunday bartender Brad Wilson is awesome!” Yes! D-RANKS with B-RAD! I won’t reveal Stops 2 and 3 so you’ll be encouraged to click through and read the entire article, but let’s just say I agree with them. I really like the idea of a Sunday afternoon date. So much more laid-back and less pressure than Saturday night.

Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday fellas… keep the Bear in mind.

Shout-out to my apartment community Number 10 Main! They gave me a free deep bathroom cleaning for renewing my lease. The cleaning happened today and the place looks amazing! Cleaner than it has ever been!

You can get as many $50 gift cards as you want for $25 each. There are some restrictions – you can’t use them until 2016, and you can’t use them to buy alcohol.

Sunday Supper and a Movie features classic holiday movies shown on the Majestic’s giant screen with sound. There will be a special dinner menu each Sunday, and the Majestic’s regular menu will be available too. Reservations are required for these dinners. Movies start at 6:30 and here is the lineup:

The 8th annual Clark’s Christmas Dinner will happen Thursday, December 17 at the Majestic. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation will be shown on the big screen with sound. Costume contest based on the movie, and a tacky sweater contest too. I have been a costume judge in years past, and this event is a LOT of fun. 7 and 7:30 seatings, Reservations are required and will fill up quickly, so if you want to attend, you need to call the Majestic NOW. Brunch with Santa at the Majestic is Saturday, December 19 with 9:30 AM, 10 AM, 11:30 AM and noon reservations available. There will be kids’ brunch menu items, holiday movies on the big screen, and appearances by the North Pole elves, Mrs. Claus, and Santa himself. Reservations required and once again, this will fill up early, so do not delay.

New Year’s Eve Dinner will be Thursday, December 31 at the Majestic beginning at 5 PM. Special menu by Chef Patrick Reilly and the regular menu will be available too. You can pre-game for your New Year’s Eve plans with a great dinner, or you can stay late and ring in the new year. Entertainment by Paul McKinney and the Knights of Jazz.

There will be New Year’s Day brunch at the Majestic 10:30-2:30 and dinner 4-9. Reservations highly recommended.

I saw several reports on social media yesterday of hundreds of ladybugs swarming, invading people’s homes. I checked Google News and this is a natural phenomenon around this time of year. The ladybugs are looking for a place to stay warm as the weather gets cooler, and they squeeze inside cracks in people’s homes. The best practice seems to be to vacuum up the ones that get inside.

Somehow this flew under my radar when it was announced back in September: A new J. Brooks coffee will help the homeless. Part of the purchase price of every bag of HUB Coffee will go to the Hospitality HUB, a Downtown nonprofit that helps the homeless get a hand up, rather than a handout. Groceries Downtown that sell the coffee include Miss Cordelia’s and Trolley Stop Market.

I remember a conversation I had earlier this year with a vegan (can’t remember who, think Chris Reyes maybe?) who told me that there are certain kinds of beer he wished he could drink, but can’t. Among the ones he mentioned was Guinness, which was filtered with fish bladders. Well, good news: Guinness is putting a new filtration system in place that will be completely animal-free.

This is my second update of the day. I did a huge insomnia-inspired news post about 6 this morning, so be sure to check that one too.

The total is in from the Sinners for Saints Ball, held on Halloween at Stop 345: After expenses, $14,288.34 was raised for the Church Health Center. That is just a mind-blowing number and I am quite sure it was more than they expected. Thanks to the Beale Street Loft Remnants and South Main Dirty Dozen for giving Downtowners the best Halloween party in years while at the same time raising a huge sum for a deserving charity. For those of you who attended, there’s a 2-minute survey you can fill out to give your feedback. They are already planning for next year.

The first College Football Playoff rankings will be released tonight at 6 PM. Memphis has a perfect record and a better quality win (Ole Miss) than several other undefeated teams that are expected to be highly ranked.

The Grizzlies play an away game at Sacramento tonight after suffering the worst loss in team history last night at Golden State. 9 PM tipoff.

Charvey Mac will play the Silly Goose tonight at 10. $2 local beers.

As I posted earlier, the City Council will discuss the idea of extending the time frame for which parking meters charge to midnight. At least one person has tweeted that such an extension would eliminate Downtown restaurants as potential dining choices for his family. Would the city be padding its own revenue at the expense of Downtown businesses? Quite possibly.

The Central Station project will add 200 apartments to South Main. The new apartments will be on Front near G.E. Patterson, on Main at Carolina, and on the elevated railroad platform.

Blues City Cafe will serve a free meal to veterans on Veteran’s Day, 11 AM to 2 PM. You need to show VA Card or DD-214 with photo ID.

Memphis in May’s annual BBQ championship judging seminar, to be held Saturday, November 14, has its registration closing soon, on Monday, November 9. Details on how to register here. The seminar qualifies people to judge at BBQ Fest. Participants will sample BBQ in a simulated judging process and learn about blind, on-site, and final judging, as well as the different championship categories and Memphis in May rules.

Paul reports that a last minute item has been added to the City Council agenda for today, to discuss extending the time parking meters charge for parking until midnight.

On ioby, you can help raise money for a Little Free Library in the Nettleton Community Orchard. The library would not only loan books, but would be modified so that those who live in the neighborhood can share seeds with one another. Donations will also go toward two benches, a hose cabinet, hardscaping (gravel area) and an additional pet-waste station. The Nettleton Community Orchard is a community fruit tree orchard in the South Main district established by neighbors to serve the community.

This sounds like a cool event: We Gotta Get Out of this Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War at STAX Museum on November 18. For those unfamiliar with the area, STAX Museum is not walkable from Downtown, so you’d need to drive there or take a taxi or Lyft or Uber.

The contract with Memphis Symphony Orchestra musicians is being restructured to include “community engagement.” That will allow the musicians to receive a generous raise, all the way up to $22,813 a year. Daaaamn. Didn’t realize that guy standing in the food stamp line played the cello.

There was more of a reason former president Jimmy Carter was in town than just to build a house. He was here to announce that the 33rd Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project for Habitat for Humanity will take place in Memphis’ Uptown neighborhood August 21-17, 2016.

Glad to hear this: The Hickman Building at Madison and Fourth has been purchased. The plan is to redevelop it as a mixed-use building, with retail on the ground floor and any mix of office, retail, and residential on the floors above. It makes me very, very happy to see development along this stretch of Madison. As you know, I live near Madison and Main, and attended a party at Madison and Danny Thomas this weekend. Because I’m pretty damn fearless, I walked there, but I have to admit I was a little nervous on the stretch from Third to Danny Thomas where there are a lot of vacant buildings. Madison is one of the gateways into Downtown and we don’t need people seeing blight as they make their way into our neighborhood.

There is a movement to camo the FedExForum for the next Grizzlies home game, on the night of Wednesday, November 11. That of course is Veteran’s Day. Not only would it be a way to honor our veterans at the game, but it would be a way to show solidarity behind the team as they host defending NBA champions the Golden State Warriors. Choose901 will be selling “Defending the Bluff” camo shirts at the game for only $10, with proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that helps veterans get transportation they otherwise couldn’t afford to get them the medical care they need.

Bardog is seeking a brunch server/bartender Saturday-Sunday 10-5. Only serious applicants need apply, and you can do so by dropping by the bar Monday-Friday between 2 and 4 PM to fill out an applications. Must be capable of putting up with John D and me on Saturdays.

Several pieces of Thanksgiving news this afternoon. First of all, from Mashable: What your Thanksgiving dinner plate says about your personality. For those of you who remember the Nuh-Uh Girl, she is an analyst. She loves digging into people’s psyches and exploring their eccentricities.

LUNCHBOXeats has released its order and pick-up Thanksgiving dinner menu for 2015. You can select from complete dinner packages for the entire family, or just entrees, just sides, or just desserts. You need to have your order in by November 16.

Another place cooking Thanksgiving turkeys for pickup is Central BBQ. You can pre-order a 10 to 14 pound turkey for $44.99. Turkeys are slow-smoked to perfection. It is kind of blasphemy for me to say this, because we Memphians are supposed to love our pork, but the Cajun turkey plate is probably my favorite thing on Central’s menu.

This is not a Downtown event, but nevertheless is worth a trip out to the Agricenter: India Fest this Saturday, November 7. It’s a celebration of Indian food, culture, music and dance and it is highly regarded by those who have been in past years. Most definitely worth checking out if you enjoy foreign cultures.

Hungry Memphis has a post about Double J’s BBQ egg rolls. Hungry Memphis blogger Michelle Lewis was surprised by how big they were, and recommends having them with Double J’s BBQ sauce.

TechCamp Memphis happens this Saturday at the Southwest Tennessee Community College Library. For attendees of the conference, there will be a special happy hour Thursday at the Downtown Flying Saucer, a chance for those attending to get to know one another in advance.

Slate has the best way to re-heat pizza. It’s nearly as fast as a microwave and does not involve an oven.

Yesterday we followed up an outstanding Halloween party at Stop 345 with D-RANKS with B-RAD at the Blind Bear. The bar was full by noon. Katie Mac from the Moody Ques officially met Katie (not Mac) from PorkOsaurus. Katie (not Mac) was showing photos of Bruce/Caitlyn from the Sinners for Saints party Saturday night. “He should have won,” Katie (not Mac) said, passing her phone around so people could view the photo.

“Yeah, I talked to him for a bit,” said my BBQ team vice-president Clay. “I agree, he should have won.”

Then I piped in, “Well, I was the judge and I think he should have won.” The thing is, I assumed one of the hosts went to all three rooms and announced that the costume contest was about to begin. Apparently that didn’t happen, because after the contest was over, Bruce/Caitlyn came up to me and asked, “When is the contest going to start?” Also, I didn’t realize until after the contest that he was Mr./Ms. Jenner specifically, and I didn’t realized he had shaved one of his legs in addition to half his beard. If the contestants had been brought up on stage, I would have known those things. The Sinners for Saints party was fabulous otherwise, but that contest needs to be a lot better organized next year.

You learn all kinds of random things from bartenders: B-RAD cautioned against eating pickled green beans, one after another, right of out the jar, as many bartenders who make Bloody Marys do. Good as they are, things that are pickled increase your blood pressure.

It was a day filled with fun, food, friends, and football. I am so lucky to have such a great place only three blocks from my front door. I got there at 11 and left at 7:25. One of my friends commented how I used to bar-hop on Sundays. The Bear has gotten so good that I don’t feel the need to go anywhere else.

Anyway, on to the news… Bill Maher has been announced for a January 23 date at the Orpheum. Tickets will be on sale a week from Friday at 10 PM via Ticketmaster and the Orpheum box office.

Hungry Memphis has a post on lunch at South Main Sushi and Grill including a PDF of the take-out menu. Sushi prices look reasonable and they have some nice Express Lunch options.

Downtown Dining Week and the Indie Memphis Film Festival will present Dinner and a Movie Monday and Tuesday, November 9 and 10.

A Yahoo! Sports writer projects Memphis in the college football playoffs, projecting #1 Clemson vs. #4 Memphis in the Orange Bowl. The writer says Memphis deserves inclusion over Baylor because of Baylor’s horrible off-season schedule and lack of a quality win. Memphis’ win over Ole Miss looks better and better each time Ole Miss wins. I’m put in the unusual position of having to root for Ole Miss, a team I can’t stand, to help Memphis. I won’t root for them Saturday against my Hogs though.

If you’re a fan of Goldcrest 51 beer, it will be available at Lafayette’s Music Room beginning Saturday.

Way more news than I have time to post in a lunchtime break, so check back about 5:30 for an after-work post. I will hit Melissa Monday at Bardog after I get the post up, where I will most likely see a special guest from Indonesia. After that I’ll walk over to the Blind Bear to watch Monday Night Football and the Grizzlies. These 9:30 road games kill me, but I will try to stay up and watch all of it.

Three Saturdays before Halloween, two of the Sinners for Saints Ball’s organizers, Robbie and Aaron, came in the Blind Bear to see about hanging a poster advertising the party in the window. “We hope to draw 400 to 500 people,” they told me, although they said capacity was in the 600 to 700 range.

“You’re wrong,” I told them. “You’re going to hit capacity.”

I was right.

I like being right. I especially like being right when it means that enough money was raised that, after paying expenses, a five-figure donation can be made to the Church Health Center. If interested, please click the link and read about the CHC’s philosophy and the many wonderful services it provides in the Memphis community. I tried to type up a paragraph summary of all that the CHC does, but I would have to devote an entire blog post (and a long one at that) to its mission and services.

I had not been to Stop 345 in eleven years and was not quite sure what to expect. To my right as I walked in was an enormous buffet of food provided by the event’s sponsors. There were two bars, the permanent U-shaped one and a makeshift bar with beer and punch. In the main room was the stage and another large bar, with Jello shots galore. There was an outdoor area leading to Tad’s indoor trailer park and the Amurica photo booth out back. The indoor trailer park was the space for those who just wanted to sit down and chill. If you have never seen it (and I hadn’t before last night), you need to. It’s one of those unique Memphis treasures tucked away in a corner.

Elliott from London – good meeting you last night, and I hope I spelled your name correctly. You know, when this blog wins awards it’s nice and all, but these days I really write this thing because people come up and tell me that it helped them find where they fit in Downtown. Glad to hear it helped you, and no I don’t even plan to stop doing it.

They gave me a media pass so I was able to watch Lord T and Eloise from the VIP area, and the show was excellent as I expected. The main room was packed to hear their performance. DJ Lil’ Eggroll did an outstanding job before and after.

I do want to say that the costume contest was not quite what I expected. I did not know I would be the only judge. I did not know that contestants were not going to get up on stage, and that I was supposed to be walking around throughout the evening, scoping out winners. I was also surprised that, given that they had around 20 gift cards donated, they only awarded first prize to each of three categories: Best Man, Best Woman, and Best Couple. I did the best I could with guidance from the Saints for Sinners organizers, but I think I could have done better if I had known what was going to happen.

I hope if they get as many gift card donations next year, they expand the categories in some way. My buddy Zack was dressed up as half man, half woman, even going so far as to shave off half his beard. His plan was to enter all three categories: man, woman, and couple (with himself). He wouldn’t have won any of those three categories but I would have given him Most Creative if that had existed.

Overall, though, the party just couldn’t have been much better. I really see this as an event that is going to grow more and more each year the way Stumbling Santa has done.

My judging duties complete, I left Stop 345 a few minutes before 2 and walked down Madison and then Main to the Blind Bear. We’re on Standard Time now, which means that at 2:00, the clocks fell back to 1:00. I always assumed that meant the bars got to stay open an hour extra, because 3:00 is the mandated closing time for non-Beale Street bars by Tennessee law. However, that was not the case. At 1:30 (the second 1:30) Colin did last call. He explained that the number of hours the bar stays open has to be consistent with all the other weeks of the year, and that the cops will show up and shut you down if you try to stay open the extra hour. I don’t blame him for obeying the rules but (and this is directed at the Alcoholic Beverage Commission not the Blind Bear) it’s really kind of ridiculous that the bars can’t stay open until 3:00.

There are plenty of photos of Sinners for Saints floating around Facebook but I didn’t take any. The reason why is, I don’t keep a case on my iPhone. The only time I ever have had a case was my iPhone 4S, when the back was glass. I hate cases in general. On Halloween, when I am in costume, getting a phone in and out of my pocket is a bit of a risk. So, sorry, no pics on the blog, but there are plenty out there, seek and ye shall find.

One other thing I learned last night: Drinking a liter Mountain Dew at 8 PM is not a good way to wake back up from a nap. Oh, it was effective for keeping me awake, I’ll give it that much, but when I got home at 3, I couldn’t sleep! I have had maybe two hours of restless sleep in the past 24.

Back to Stumbling Santa which I mentioned earlier in this post… most of you know this is a huge pub crawl to raise money and toys for Porter-Leath. It is the first Saturday in December, and last year over 1200 Santas stumbled from bar to bar Downtown, creating quite the spectacle. The event has grown so huge that they need a tent, heater, and other accessories to make sure all the Santas have a good time. You can donate here and help make Stumbling Santa even bigger and better. Those who donate $100 or more will be invited to a special November 12 party at the Flying Saucer, where Saint Nick will bring in beers to sample from all over the world.

Little Rock readers: Memphis’ original beer Goldcrest 51 will be coming your way soon.

I considered the idea of wearing my PBR MAN costume to Sunday brunch today, but my costume got partially damaged last night and I’m not in the mood to repair it. So, T-shirt and shorts it is. I’ll be at D-RANKS with B-RAD at 11 AM at Blind Bear, and then figure out the rest of the day from there.

 

 

I have even more news about tonight’s Sinners for Saints Ball at Stop 345. The first piece of information is a bit of insider info about one of the costume contest judges: He will be dressed as superhero PBR MAN and he is known to be a fan of tube tops.

Secondly, the sponsors who will be putting out lots of delicious food at the ball tonight have been announced: Pete & Sam’s, Double J, Molly’s La Casita, and Boar’s Head. Very excited about getting some Pete & Sam’s food without having to drive out east.

Getting back to the costume contest, there will be over $1000 in prizes handed out, from the following local businesses: Double J, Capital Grille, Tamp & Tap, Seasons 52, Rizzo’s Diner, the Silly Goose, the Green Beetle, Le Chardonnay, LBOE, the Hi-Tone, La Hacienda, Local, Agave Maria, Boneheads, Elite Men’s Health, Alchemy, Adam Exelbierd Fine Art, Tony’s Trophy Room, Golfsmith, and Huey’s. Thanks to all of those businesses for supporting a fabulous party that will raise thousands of dollars for the Church Health Center.

Tickets are $40 if you purchase them online until 4 PM today. At the door, admission will be $50. If you think that you are paying a lot compared to most Halloween parties, look at this comparison:

By the way, you are not limited to two drinks, or beers, or Jello shots. This is just an example of what the average person might consume at a Halloween party. It’s an open bar! (Please be responsible if driving though.) By the way, they forgot to include parking in their comparison, which is free in the Stop 345 lot.

For those of you who went to the two predecessor parties, South Main Dirty Dozen and Nightmare on Main Street, all the gripes I had about those two parties have been removed. There’s plenty of space and you don’t have to squeeze through cramped entryways to get from one room to the next. There will be beer, and plenty of it. And best of all (for me, anyway) is that the party is in the Downtown core! It’s a short walk from where I live. For those not familiar, take Madison east from Third. You will see an exit ramp leading off to Danny Thomas. Take the ramp, and Stop 345 is right there, right before you get to Danny Thomas. Doors open at 9, with DJ Lil’ Eggroll and fortune tellers starting it off, Lord T and Eloise with Witnesse at 11:30, costume contest at 1, then Eggroll is back for round two.

To my Jello shot pushers tonight: I will have a few, I’m sure, but I will have to do them in moderation. Since I now have responsibilities at this event, I can’t turn into “BBQ Fest Paul” until after the costume contest.

One more Sinners for Saints item before I get on with the rest of the news: Although everything is included, bartenders, fortune tellers, and DJs do appreciate tips. Accumulate some ones today (or larger bills, if so inclined) to tip at the party tonight.

Now, let’s say for some reason you don’t want to go to the Sinners for Saints Ball tonight. You’re making a mistake, but this is America dammit, and you’re free to do what you want, any old time. Let’s have a look at your other options.

Filmmaker Craig Brewer has thrown some pretty legendary private Halloween parties in years past. This year, for the first time his party is open to the public. It is at Earnestine & Hazel’s starting at 9 and live music will include The Sheiks, Jack Oblivian, Superwitch, The Dead Soldiers, and Al Kapone.

If you’re looking for something kid-friendly, Halloween on the Island is tonight at 6:30 at Mud Island River Park and gift shop. Haunted River Walk, costume contests, games, rides, and trick-or-treating. $5 per person.

Back to adult fun tonight: Mollie Fontaine’s is always a place that can be counted on to be fun on Halloween. For those not familiar, it’s a restaurant/bar in one of the Victorian mansions on Adams Avenue, and the place has a spooky, haunted feel on Halloween. There will be music by Future Everything artists.

Coyote Ugly on Beale Street is having a Bunny Mansion Halloween party starting at 7. Costume contest with $100 prize and Fireball specials.

The New Daisy is having “The Devil Wears Prada: A Highly Stylized Affair” tonight. It’s hosted by Chris Soules of The Bachelor. Complimentary admission before 10 with full costume. Featuring DJ Connor Cruise and DJ Epic.

If you’re not into Halloween and just want to hear some good live music, go to the Center for Southern Folklore, where it’s the J Train Blues Band CD release party. Start time is 8 PM.

Time to get the day started. I will do Brunch with Bloom at Bardog and a stop at Blind Bear as usual, but that will be followed by food (probably Maciel’s) and a long halftime nap. I can’t wait for tonight, this should be the best time I’ve had on Halloween in years.
