Is Downtown safe? My thoughts as of October 2010

As many of you know, in September two attempted rapes happened in parking garages Downtown, both within a block of the University of Memphis law school.  These crimes have received a lot of coverage in the media, leading people to ask, “Is Downtown safe?”  As someone who’s recognized as being a voice of Downtown, and someone who’s down here living it every day, I want to weigh in with my honest opinion.

Before I start, though, a little about me, though, to clear up any misconceptions.  I am not a paid blogger.  I do not receive any money from the city, or any civic organization or business for writing the things I write.  I don’t mean to knock those who do by saying that; I’m just pointing out that no one censors what I say on this blog.  This is my personal blog, and I’m free to write whatever I want about Downtown, positive or negative.

In summer 2006 I did indeed go negative.  It was horrible down here.  Three people I knew were knocked out and robbed in parking garages and alleys.  Aggressive panhandlers – not the homeless, but professional scammers – were earning good incomes hustling and intimidating innocent people on the streets.  A co-worker of mine got followed down an alley by one of the “pros” who proposed they do all sorts of lewd acts.  On the weekends, bands of teenagers roamed the Downtown streets, harassing people, blocking traffic, breaking into cars.  It was out of control and I absolutely blew up about it on this blog.  In 8 1/2 years it’s the one time I considered moving out of Downtown.   Thank goodness I never did.

Since then, many steps have been taken to clean up the area.  The Center City Commission hired a safety coordinator, Larry Bloom, a highly experienced former police officer, to come up with a plan.  I first met Larry three years ago and immediately had hope.   He was a no-nonsense guy with the knowledge to get to the root of the crime issues Downtown.

A year later, the CCC created a Downtown safety patrol – two safety officers who ride around the core during peak hours and respond to complaints of aggressive panhandling, disorderly conduct and the like.  Earlier this year, MPD announced that they were creating a special detail of officers who would patrol Downtown streets – not in cars, as has been done previously, but on foot and bike.  It has made a difference.  A lot of our “regulars” who used to be out here every day intimidating people have not been seen in months, or in some cases even years now – either because they realized it wasn’t being tolerated anymore and gave up, or because they kept getting thrown back in jail every time they got out.

There is also a system of cameras that has been installed Downtown, and more are coming thus year… when it’s all said and done, there will be a network of about 100 cameras tied into the Blue Crush system.  Most of the 2006 trouble spots – alleys, for example – are now covered by these cameras or will be soon.  I can tell you that the one in Court Square has made a tremendous difference.  That park has gone from being a hotbed for the troublemakers to a place where you can enjoy a nice lunch outside.

I personally feel totally safe being out by myself in Downtown Memphis in 2010, be it day or night.  I frequently walk home from the bars, sometimes as far away as from G.E. Patterson, sometimes as late as 3 AM.  In my entire eight and a half years down here, I have never been robbed or assaulted.

That’s not to say a problem doesn’t exist.  Two young women will be haunted for the rest of their lives by what happened.  That’s inexcusable.  I may claim that I feel safe down here, but I haven’t walked in the shoes of a 110-pound woman who is not all that familiar with the area.

Could anything have been done to prevent these attempted rapes?  Well, right after the first article came out about the second one, which happened around 3 AM on a Saturday, I made note of the perpetrator’s name and looked up his criminal record.  He was arrested for robbery in 2007, and was sentenced to six years.  2007 plus 6… are you getting 2010?  I’m not.  If this individual had been made to serve his full sentence, he’d not have been on the streets to panhandle and attempt to rape that woman.  His record revealed a lot of robbery and assault charges going back to the ’80s… I can’t understand why anyone would think he was the type of individual that deserves parole.  I wonder how recently he was paroled.  I’d bet less than a week before the attempted rape occurred.

The garages themselves need to step up security.  Parking garages have, over the years, been seen by the criminals as good places to commit crimes, where nobody is watching and there are lots of hiding spaces.  That said, I think the Metro 67 garage did a fairly good job protecting the young woman who was almost raped there.  There was a security guard on duty at 3 AM, which is not the case for some garages Downtown.  The entire garage was covered by security camera, and when the guard saw what was happening and heard the woman’s screams, he ran to her defense.  I hate to say it, but in a lot of garages Downtown this would have gone farther than “attempted” rape.

Another problem is that the criminals and hustlers have learned what hours the Downtown patrols work, and have changed their schedules accordingly.  Some of our “regulars” who used to be active in the daytime now don’t come out until 10, 11 at night.  Patrol hours need to be varied, so that criminals cannot operate at any hour without fear that an officer is going to roll up on them.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the two women who were assaulted – as I said earlier, there is absolutely no excuse.  However, I want to say that I don’t think Downtown is as unsafe as it’s been made out to be recently in the media – it in fact is much, much safer than it was four years ago.  Had the steps taken 2007-10 not been put in place, I have a feeling we would have heard about many more than two assaults/attempted rapes/robberies in the area of the law school since it opened.

Anyway, that’s my two cents.  Y’all be safe out there, and thanks to the CCC and MPD for all the recent steps they have taken to protect us.

Pics from MIFA’s Feed the Soul fundraiser at The Warehouse

Last night I attended MIFA’s “Feed the Soul” event at The Warehouse.  I must admit, I probably wouldn’t have attended this had the organizer not offered me free tickets… but once I was there, my reaction was, “Why haven’t I been coming to this???”  Best party I have ever been to at the Warehouse, and that’s really saying a lot.  I will never miss it again, and will gladly pay for tickets in the future… also going to light a fire under the rest of the gang to go.  They missed out on an incredible event!

A table holding items to be auctioned off, with posters promoting the great work MIFA does in the background. That's Kris, owner of the Warehouse, in the blue shirt.

There were many cigars from Havana Mix available for purchase.

The MIFA Store Lounge was one of the best parts of the party. They brought in goods from the MIFA Store on Vance, and people got some incredible bargains. I believe the couch on the left was $50. The coffee table was $40. They had clothing, glassware and much more as well.
Oxygen bar
At 7:30 the main event took the stage... Raiford! He totally re-created the experience of the club, with fog machine, multiple costume changes, maracas, and Paula, Frances, and Marcus dancing on stage.
Sponsors were treated like royalty. Here's the outside sponsor seating at the AutoZone Rhythm & Blues Pavilion.

This was exactly the kind of fundraiser I enjoy… elegant and quite entertaining, yet not a bit pretentious.  Truly an event where there was something for everyone.  Thanks for a fantastic time and you can count on seeing me next year.

What you’ll find if you trace far enough back on ancestry.com… plus, info about two parties tonight

Dimetrodon

Ughhh.  Called in this morning due to an upset stomach.  It’s been bothering me since Wednesday.  I’ll spare everyone the details.

So I’m sitting in bed with the netbook this morning, surfing Wikipedia.  Lately I’ve been reading about the different archeological periods and how life evolved.  It’s quite interesting.  I had a book on dinosaurs when I was 5, and the creature pictured in this post was then classified as a dinosaur.  Turns out it’s not.  In the Permian, the period immediately preceding the age of the dinosaurs, animals that laid eggs on land diverged into two groups.  One group was the sauropsids, which evolved into lizards, snakes, crocodiles, dinosaurs, and birds.

The other group was the synapsids, which evolved over years into a group called the cynodonts, which evolved into mammals.  The handsome fella pictured here was a synapsid, and therefore he may be one of our very earliest ancestors.  The sail on his back was a primitive means of regulating his temperature, marking the beginning of the evolution of warm-blooded animals.

Too bad that, as we evolved, we didn’t retain more of the characteristics of Uncle Dimetrodon.  Having a sail on our backs would have been sweeeeeet.  Think how that would change sports like windsurfing.

All right… Since I’m not feeling well I’m not gonna do a full “Friday update” post, but two things to know about tonight:

It’s time for another Alley Jams party featuring Memphis music at a Downtown location.  This week it’s at Main and Peabody Place, and will feature saxophonist/songwriter Brian “Breeze” Cayolle, and blues artist Preston Shannon.  Vendors start selling at 4:30; music at 5.

Not far down the street, Shelton Clothiers is having the 3rd birthday party for their Pink Pig clothing line.  If you’re wearing the Pig, they’ll serve you award-winning Squeal Street BBQ, beer and wine.  If you don’t own any Pink Pig apparel, they’ll be selling T-shirts for $10, hats for $15, and they’ll give you $10 off any collared knit.

When I get to feeling better I’ll upload pics from last night’s MIFA Feed the Soul party at The Warehouse… best party I’ve ever attended there, and having gone I can’t believe this event hasn’t been on my radar in past years.  Thanks Kris, MIFA and sponsors for a delightful evening.

Thur update: Feed the Soul, Black Crowes, plan to pay more to drink at Pint Nite

Tonight’s going to be a fun night. I’m attending Feed the Soul at the Warehouse, with soul food, Raiford DJing, and live music by Earl Randle and the Ryan Peel Band. There will also be a bourbon tasting, oxygen bars, and more. You can get your tickets to Feed the Soul here. Proceeds benefit one of the most worthy charities in the city, MIFA.

Meanwhile, over on Mud Island, the Black Crowes bring their “Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys” tour to the Ampitheater. Should be a big party night in Downtown Memphis.

I had a good time chilling with friends last night at the Saucer… just a nice, relaxed time, good conversation without anyone interrupting us or hovering behind us. While we were there the new fall menus came out, and I immediately noticed a change… “Monday Night is Pint Nite! Almost all drafts $3.00.” Yep, they’re going up a quarter. I guess it’s not too bad, though. Other bars in the area – Bardog, South of Beale for example – already charge $3 on their respective pint nights. The price increase won’t stop me from coming, because it’s still a bargain – I’m at 166 beers done toward my next plate, and I still have enough Pint Nite beers left to get to about 180.

That’s all for now… not a whole lot of news today. Hope to see you at Feed the Soul tonight.  If you’re not doing that or the Crowes, don’t forget there’s a line dance flash mob in front of BB King’s.

Hari’s closes

I’m sad to report that Hari’s at 51 S. Main has closed.  Sad to hear it because I loved to go there on weekends and vacations and get some Indian food.

I’m going to say it – people looking to start a business should leave that building alone, unless it’s a “name” business like the Blue Monkey was when it came Downtown.  A “name” business has the potential to fire off development on that entire block.  An unknown business, good as it may be, has to deal with the issue of getting people in the door.  I wish that’s not the way it was.  But it is.

Blue Coast Burrito would make a killing there. Just sayin’.

Wed update: Dance flash mob tomorrow night, get a Newcastle glass at Mesquite, luxury apartment for rent in Midtown

There will be a line dance flash mob on Beale Street tomorrow night. The event is to celebrate Preston Shannon’s appearance at Treasure Coast Blues Festival in Port St. Lucie, Florida on November 6. Participants will practice the dance, the Shuffle Boogie Soul, from Shannon’s “Honky Tonk” (see the video here) from 5 to 6:30, and filming will begin at 7. The footage will be combined with footage from similar dance mob events around the word. The mob will happen in front of BB King’s. For more info contact Kearta Knox at ks.knox@hotmail.com.

Mesquite Chop House is getting in on the “buy the beer, keep the glass” night action. Tonight at the restaurant, buy a pint of Newcastle for $5 and keep the glass for free, from 6 PM until they run out. Try some of Michael Patrick’s delicious cuisine while you are there!

One of my blog readers has an apartment to rent, and asked me to give it a mention. It’s not Downtown, but it’s close, in Midtown at 199 N. McNeil. It’s a 1 BR/1 BA 1,000 SF apartment with luxury amenities, stainless steel in the kitchen, Jacuzzi hot tub, and new HVAC system. $950/mo rent includes all utilities, as well as cable (400+ channels including HBO, Max, Showtime). Pet friendly. This is someone I know personally and I believe she’d be an excellent landlord; if interested check out this listing for more info, photos, and contact information.

That’ll wrap it up for now, lunchtime. Think I’ll try Maria’s again, since it’s the only place I know of in Southaven/Horn Lake that has the Memphis Flyer.

Tue update: Foodie Twitter account, Bikes on Beale, sales job, beerfest, Downtown Dining Week to return, Grizzlies to hold public practice

I saw an interesting Twitter account today – @foodiememphis. The bio for the account reads, “Open dinner group for Memphians or visitors, looking for interesting company & great food. Promoting unity & local restaurants, 1 passed dinner plate @ a time.” Sounds good. I followed it. Apparently this is a pretty new Twitter account. They’re having their first meetup at Fuel tonight.

Tomorrow is the last night for Bikes on Beale, where motorcycle enthusiasts bring their rides to Beale and park on the street. Friends of mine who ride motorcycles and scooters have a lot of fun at this, so come check it out if you own one.

Lansky 126 tweeted that they are hiring a full-time sales associate. This would be a great opportunity for someone wanting a career in retail. Not only would you be surrounded by the history of the Peabody and the Lansky clothing line, but you’d get to learn from the Lansky family who are some of the best salespeople around. E-mail sales@lanskybros.com for more info.

Here’s a Memphis Flyer article about the Cooper-Young Regional Beerfest to happen October 9. I have my ticket. Do you?

Also on the Flyer’s website: Downtown Dining Week returns November 15-21. You’ll be able to get a three-course meal at some of Downtown’s nicest restaurants for only $20.10. That’s up a penny from last year, but you know, inflation. As soon as the CCC get’s this year’s DDW site up, I’ll link to it and we can see what the choices are. At the risk of sounding like the Nuh-Uh Girl, that’s my birthday week, who’s buying me dinner? :-)

The Grizzlies will have a free public practice Sunday. Fan Fest with the Grizz Girls and kids’ activities 1 to 2, practice 2 to 3, and afterward players, coaches, and front office people will answer questions and sign autographs. More details here.

That’s all for the afternoon recap… gotta copy some photos to a memory stick, then it’s time for trivia at the Saucer.

SMA Oktoberfest will be bigger and better than ever this year

The South Main Association’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, to be held from 3 to 7 PM on Sunday, October 10, will be their biggest Oktoberfest yet. In past years it’s been held on the lawn outside Harry’s Detour. This year, it’s expanding out into the street – G.E. Patterson Avenue will be blocked from Main to Mulberry for music and dancing.

They will also have musical entertainment this year, as Pam & Terry will perform from 3 to 6. Pam & Terry are a staple on Beale Street on Saturday afternoons, and they entertained crowds at Sleep Out Louie’s every Friday night for years.

Beer and wine will be provided by Ghost River and the Corkscrew. Delicious Oktoberfest food will be served by Harry’s Detour and Circa. Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

The event is free for SMA members. If you’re not an SMA member, you can partake for $10, but you might want to think about paying the full membership price of $35 to join. It’s not hard to make your money back in terms of food and beer consumed over the year, with several parties throughout the year, burgers and Ghost River beer at Trolley night, and free hors d’oeuvres at most monthly meetings.

They’re asking people who plan on attending to RSVP, so they can be sure to have enough beer and brats for everyone. RSVP to info@southmainmemphis.net with “South Main Association Oktoberfest RSVP” in the subject line. If you want more info about Oktoberfest, or if you want to go ahead and join the SMA online, here’s a link to their website.

WOW… it wasn’t until last night that I realized that SMA Oktoberfest and the Flying Saucer’s beer festival are on the same day. Luckily, the Saucer’s event starts at noon and continues to 10, so it’s definitely possible to do both. With the Cooper-Young Regional Beerfest the day before, it’s going to be a beery weekend.

I’ll do the usual “daily update” post after work, so check back.

Rapscallions are an awesome trivia team… on Tuesday

I was at the Saucer for Pint Nite and Monday Night Football tonight, and my friend Eric was there too.  The Saucer does $25 halftime trivia on MNF nights, and we decided to play as the Rapscallions.

On Tuesday, other trivia teams should fear the Rapscallions, because we usually win or at least get top three.  Monday?  Not so much.  We got one half of one question right, but they don’t do partial credit on Monday.  Eric, displaying a lot more sense than I had, left before the results were even announced.

I did have fun showing off the bite mark Kelly AKA “Pit Bull” AKA “Crocodile” AKA “Shark” left on my arm Sunday.  A day off + a sister celebrating an upcoming wedding + an enabling mother + 6 hours of vodka led to my bite wound.  She better hope I don’t post pics.

Second Mon update: Kooky repairs, a way to be rescued from annoying people, and more on Southwest/AirTran

Earlier today I mentioned Monday Night Football at Kooky Canuck among the list of possible things to do Downtown tonight. Scratch that… Kooky put up a “please pardon our dust” page on Facebook today, saying that they’re going to be closed a few days for repairs. They will reopen Friday, October 1 at 11 AM.

LifeHacker posted today about a service called Rescu.me that could be very useful for people who hang out at Downtown bars. Have you ever been trapped by someone in uninteresting, mundane conversation and you feel like they’ll never shut up? And then finally they do, and you get ready to go back to enjoying your drink, when they go, “Well, you know, I was watching TV or something the other day, and…” and start another long conversation thread. Well, you think, at least their beer is almost empty, and they’ve said it’s their last one… and then they go, “You know, I think I’m going to have ONE MORE.” Rescu.me can rescue you. You text “SMS 5 (text of message)” to 206-866-5924 and it will send you that message in 5 minutes, and you can pretend to have an emergency that has to be taken care of. You can substitue another number for 5 for a different number of minutes, and you can substitute CALL for SMS to have the service call you instead. For best results, Lifehacker recommends putting Rescu.me’s number, 206-866-5924, in your phone, so that it will look like someone you know is contacting you. More info here.

This CNN story has more details on the Southwest/AirTran merger.  Southwest has said they intend to keep their single class seating, no fees for baggage, and open seating across all their flights.  Sounds very, very promising for improved air service to Memphis.  Again, though, these things can take years to sort out, as the merger would have to receive the approval of the Justice Department.

Time for Pint Nite!  Beers number 161, 162, and 163 toward my next plate.
