Yellow cheese dip and more Sunday news

Last night brought back an unexpected happy memory from my childhood.

I grew up in the Kingwood area of Little Rock. In the early 1980s, when we wanted something good to eat, we’d go to “the top of the hill.” That was the section of Cantrell Road bounded by North McKinley Street to the east, stretching through the intersection at Mississippi Avenue all the way west to Foxcroft Road.

The top of the hill was lined with restaurants. Whatever type of food you were hungry for, you’d likely find it on that stretch of Cantrell.

Including Mexican. Specifically, Taco Kid at the corner of Cantrell and Kingsrow.

Now, Taco Kid wasn’t the BEST Mexican restaurant in Little Rock. That honor went to Casa Bonita several miles to the south, with its strolling guitar player and prize room for kids and its all-you-can-eat deluxe dinners.

But Taco Kid was quite good. It appealed to a younger audience. Taco Kid had a rockin’ jukebox. “Burn Rubber” by The Gap Band and “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel are two songs I distinctly remember hearing for the first time there.

Taco Kid also appealed to the younger crowd by serving (as the local arts & entertainment paper put it) big ol’ plates of brown-and-yellow food at reasonable prices. For $3.95 you could get a beef enchilada in red sauce, a cheese enchilada in chili con carne, a taco, rice, and beans.

The REAL reason to go to Taco Kid, though, was what you ate while waiting for your dinner to come out: Tasty cheese dip, golden in color. There were no bits of peppers or onions or tomatoes in the cheese dip; it didn’t need them. The “chips” for dipping were nothing but taco shells cut in half. Totally unpretentious. Also, totally delicious.

Taco Kid closed around 1985, probably the victim of fast-food chain Taco Bell which had entered the Little Rock market.  Ever since then, I’ve tried to find cheese dip that approximates Taco Kid’s.

I sure haven’t found it in Memphis. Not until yesterday.

The problem is that most Mexican restaurants in the Memphis metro are owned by actual Mexicans. They serve cheese dip as they knew it growing up – white queso, bland and flavorless. To get any kind of yellow cheese dip, I have to go to chain restaurants like On the Border, and their stuff doesn’t hold a candle to my memories of Taco Kid.

I think it’s that Memphis is too far removed from Texas, yellow queso being more of a Tex-Mex thing. Little Rock is two hours closer to Texas, so Tex-Mex food is more prevalent there. I bet there’s excellent yellow queso everywhere in Dallas or Houston or San Antonio – but I have no interest in visiting those cities because they’re in Texas, and therefore they suck.

So anyway, last night was my friend Neal’s 60th birthday party at Pretty Taco. Pretty Taco is a relatively new Mexican restaurant at the corner of Front and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. They’re known for many different types of tacos and for staying open late with a nightclub vibe on the weekends.

I didn’t get to try any of the on-menu items last night. Being the host with the most that Neal is, he arranged for a build-your-own taco bar to ensure no guest would go hungry.

I had just had 3 sliders at Bardog. Also, I had on a Lansky sport shirt that you have to hand-wash. “If a taco breaks apart and gets on this shirt, that’s going to be a total pain to wash out,” I thought.

So I decided to skip the tacos and just eat some chips and cheese dip.

The queso was a lovely shade of golden yellow.

I took a bite.

That FLAVOR!!! I was instantly taken back 40 years. I can’t say for sure that was the exact recipe Taco Kid used, but it’s really close. DO NOT MISS OUT on the cheese dip there!!!

There was a lot to love about Pretty Taco. It’s a big, open space with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out upon Downtown. Halsey Werlein, for years the GM at Silly Goose, operates Pretty Taco. I’ve been told a lot of the Taco’s crowd are people who hung out at the Goose prior to the pandemic. That seems pretty consistent with the people I saw there last night. Fun crowd, indeed.

Thanks to Neal for the invite, and to my newly-married friends Luke and Sheryll for letting me hang out with them for much of the evening. The atmosphere reminded me of a really awesome high school prom.

On to the rest of the news…

The DM has a look back at Edge Motorfest, which happened yesterday.

It’s National Red Wine Day.

A man was assaulted on the east end of the Beale Street entertainment district at about 3:00 this morning. He’s in Regional One in critical condition.

Three men were caught with burglary tools on the fourth floor of the Parking Can Be Fun garage Friday just after midnight. Police also found a gun and some weed.

The next total eclipse of the sun will be on April 8. The Eclipse Company has everything you need to know.

Elmwood Cemetery will show the movie Psycho at 6 PM Friday. Tickets are $15.

The Metal Museum will hold Repair Days Thursday through Sunday. Bring your metal items for the museum’s metalsmiths to restore.

There will be a beginner cha cha class at Fourth Bluff on Saturday from 6 to 7 PM.

That’s it for today. Probably back tomorrow with more news.

Saturday update

There will be a music festival in Tom Lee Park the first weekend in May, after all – it just won’t be put on by Memphis in May. The group that produces Mempho Fest, the very successful event that happens out east every October, will put on the new event by the river.

Fizz the Season, a 4-course dinner exploring bubbles at Chez Philippe in the Peabody, will be served on Thursday, December 7.  Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and some other sparking surprises will be poured. Following a welcome reception, four courses by Keith Clinton, Chef de Cuisine, and Konrad Spitzbart, Executive Pastry Chef, will be expertly paired with sparkling wines. $200 per person includes taxes, service charge, and valet parking. Reserve your spot

The first Rock-n-Romps hit the music scene about 15 years ago. They allowed parents to keep on rocking to some great Memphis bands, without having to stay out until the wee hours, and in an environment in which they’d be comfortable bringing their kids…

… And now, Rock-n-Romp is returning. The next one, a Halloween-themed extravaganza, will happen from 1 to 5 PM Saturday, October 28 in The Ravine at 571 Marshall in The Edge/Medical District. Live music by Kitty Pool, Above Jupiter, and Tamar Love. Costume contest with prizes. Arts & crafts. Fuel Cafe food. Memphis Made beer. MemPops. Free for kids, $5 for adults. Visit the Memphis Rock-n-Romp Facebook page for more info.

Today is National Dessert Day. My recommendation would be Wonky’s Not So Famous Treats at 315 N. Main next to Alcenia’s.

Tickets for March 22 and 24 March Madness games at FedExForum are now on sale.

It’s Old Fashioned Week at the Blind Bear through Sunday, October 22.

News from Momma’s, “the diner & dive off 55” at Crump and Kentucky:

The MOMMA’S MARY arrives this weekend 🍅💥 (Tito’s Handmade Vodka, signature Bloody Mary mix, dry rub-seasoned rim, Memphis Mojo wing, cheese curd, bacon, olive, celery)
Join us for brunch items Saturday – including Grandma’s French Toast & the King Louis Plate – plus live music from 30 Minute Ego starting at 8 PM.

The Memphis Tigers couldn’t get it done vs. Tulane last night, losing 31-21. That removes just about any hope of a New Year’s Six bowl. Memphis will probably finish with 8 or 9 wins and play in a December 22 bowl vs. a service academy or a 7-5 or 6-6 SEC or ACC team. Next up for the Tigers: at UAB, 11 AM a week from today.

Want to head the Downtown Memphis Commission, succeeding Paul Young as he moves into the mayor’s office? Applications open Tuesday.

I get to go to Pretty Taco tonight to celebrate the 60th birthday of a man who likes pretty birds. Back tomorrow or Monday with more news.

Friday update

Yesterday I was reading Quora, the website where anyone can ask a question and anyone can answer a question. Somebody posted this:

“Is there any sugar daddies in Memphis, TN? If so, where can I find them and how would they want me to present myself?”

Memphis never stops being ratchet, even on a lesser-used social media platform.

The big news yesterday came in a press release from Memphis in May, stating that

  • Music Fest is “paused” for 2024
  • BBQ Fest will be May 15-18 in Liberty Park

Here’s what MiM posted to social media:

Beale Street Music Festival will pause for 2024

With a heavy heart, we share the news of the Beale Street Music Festival’s hiatus in 2024.

Last year the Beale Street Music Festival suffered a significant financial loss due to soaring expenses and a decline in attendance. In addition, our organization is navigating a legal matter with the Memphis River Parks Partnership, centered on a disagreement regarding a claim of $1.4 million dollars in damages related to our use of Tom Lee Park in 2023.

The Beale Street Music Festival is being paused in 2024 to explore all options to present an event in the future that meets the standards and authenticity expected of the brand.

As we navigate these uncharted waters, we can’t help but reflect on the 46 incredible years of the Beale Street Music Festival and your unwavering support. The future holds possibilities, and we hope to return stronger than ever, eager to continue the tradition of the Beale Street Music Festival.

That sucks for everyone, but most of all the Downtown hotels and restaurants that normally have their biggest weekend of the year the first weekend in May. AirBNB owners too. Lyft drivers. Souvenir shop owners. Lots of people.

The restaurant inside Hotel Indigo, most recently Clover Club, is for lease. The owner will consider renting the upstairs (diner) and downstairs (lounge/nightclub) spaces separately.

  • April 5: Superhero Night – free Steven Adams “Aquamane” slides to the first 5000 fans

Miz Stefani and the Variants play Momma’s tonight at 8.

30 Minute Ego plays Slider Inn Downtown tonight at 8.

Today is National No Bra Day.

It’s also World Egg Day. I recommend you celebrate by taking some hard-boiled eggs to Jessica who works Wed-Thur-Fri 11 AM-6 PM shifts at Local on Main. She loooooooves hard-boiled eggs.

This Saturday, as part of the Frame by Frame: Filmmaker’s Workshop series at the Cossitt Library, Michael Butler Jr. will give a presentation, Creating Content, from noon to 2 PM. “Discover strategies for creating engaging digital content, including vlogs, web series, and social media content. ”

Bluegrass group The Travelin’ McCourys play the Halloran Centre tonight. $39.50 to attend.

The Ghost River taproom at Main and Crump will show the movie Practical Magic from 8 to 10 tonight as part of its Fright Night October movie series. There will be drinking games too. Former Memphis Grizzly, now a Houston Rocket, Dillon Brooks, hit an opponent below the belt in a preseason game. Brooks was hit with a Flagrant 2 call, ejected, and fined $25,000.

The laughingstocks of the British royal family, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, have lost their $20 million deal to produce content for Spotify. It’s too bad Red Forman isn’t Harry’s dad. You know what Red would say to Harry? “You know why you lost the deal? Because you’re a dumbass!”

The campaign managers for Mayor-elect Paul Young appear on the DM’s On the Record podcast this week. They discuss elements of a successful mayoral campaign.

Attention Bardog/Blind Bear people who have Monday night off and all go out together that night: You’re gonna have to go somewhere with big-screen TVs. The Dallas Cowgirls play the L.A. Chargers on Monday Night Football and you know Butt Slut #1 will want to watch her stupid, underachieving team.

Atlanta Hawks 113, Memphis Grizzlies 112 last night – of course, it doesn’t count, it’s still the preseason. Coach gave Des and Triple J the night off to see who else would step up. Derrick Rose had the night off as well. Next up for Memphis: A visit to Jimmy Butler, Jimmy’s new emo hair, and the Miami Heat Sunday at 5.

Once again I’m pre-staging as much of my daily update post as I can the night before at the Blind Bear. My buddy Dennis (the one who’s related to one of the New Orleans Saints) just bought me a shot. This is called a Wet Pussy and it’s from the same family of drinks as Sex with an Alligator.

From FOX 13; Sunset dance and dining event raises funds for mothers with breast cancer.  Dining & Dancing on the River happens Saturday at Tom Lee Park  beginning at 6 PM. Pink & black is the attire and there will be live music and upscale bites.

Did you know the CIA has an official podcast?

Get out on a patio this afternoon! The forecast is low 80s for this afternoon and then a cold front moves through overnight. Tomorrow it will barely make it to 70, and it won’t be a fun 70 – north wind at 15 gusting to 25 with a low of 55. After that we won’t be near 80 for a long time.

Let’s go Tigers! Beat Tulane! A win puts Memphis in contention for a New Year’s Six bowl bid. 6 PM, ESPN. Crescent City Sports notes that Tulane hasn’t won on the road at Memphis since 1998. The Green Wave comes into tonight’s game a 3-point favorite, though.

Looks like the Philly cheesesteak flatbread is the special at Local on Main again. If I get updated info I’ll edit this post.

Back tomorrow.

Thursday update

I’ve had many a Green Tea Shot at my favorite Downtown bars… this was the first one served in the proper china, though.

The Thursday night poetry event that had been happening at Memphis Clover Club will be moving to Local on Main effective tonight. I think they said 7:00 start time but I’m not 100% on that. It’ll be downstairs after the law school happy hour concludes. More info

In other Local on Main news, the Philly cheesesteak flatbread is back as today’s special:

I hear that “Oh Sweets!” gift shop at 65 Monroe has bath bombs. We haven’t had a shop that sells bath bombs down here since Bluff City Soaps closed several years ago. Not that I use bath bombs, but ladies seem to love them.

Rootstock Wine Merchants out in The Edge has only 20 (of 150) spots remaining in its wine club. This is the club to join if you want to learn about wine from small, independent wineries.

Tonya Dyson & The Ainitmanes play 507 Lux Lounge in the basement of Curry N Jerk, 150 Monroe, Saturday at 9.

There will be a Cinematography 101 workshop at the Cossitt Library tonight at 6. You’ll get to work on camera operation, lighting, composition, and editing.

Blind Bear specials for this week:

  • Stuffed bell pepper soup – seasoned ground beef, bell peppers, tomatoes & onions – cup 6 / bowl 10
  • Lasagna, salad, and garlic bread – ground beef, peppers, onions, celery, tomatoes, spinach, ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan – 18
  • Cheesecake – strawberry puree topping – 8

Today is National Gumbo Day. Ben-Yay’s would be my top recommendation to celebrate. If you want something shareable, the cheese fries covered in gumbo at Blues City Cafe kick more than just a bit of ass.

It’s also Pulled Pork Day. Central BBQ Downtown is your go-to for this holiday. I like my pulled pork atop nachos at Central, but if you prefer yours on a sandwich, that’s all good, you do you.

Sampling a Grind City Poppy’s Pils as I type the first part of this post Wednesday afternoon… this is a damn fine beer. I’ve been told it’s often compared to Wiseacre’s Tiny Bomb but Poppy’s Pils is much smoother and not hoppy. Would drink again.

Momma’s, “the diner & dive off 55,” is hiring for the following positions:

  • PM manager
  • PM bartenders
  • Kitchen and back-of-house

Send resumes to info@mommasbar.com and apply in person at 855 Kentucky (at Crump Blvd.)

There are plans for a fine-dining restaurant called Fable to go into the former Puck Food Hall space at 409 S. Main.

A Memphis legend will “release the Tigers” prior to Friday night’s football game vs. Tulane: Jerry “The King” Lawler. Releasing the Tigers is a new tradition that began this year. Lawler will be part of Wrestling Night, with two matches taking place at Tiger Lane before football. There will be a Meet & Greet with Lawler, Jimmy Hart, Tommy “Wildfire” Rich, Reggie B. Fine (my favorite!), and other Memphis wrestlers.

The Daily Memphian sat down and talked with Mayor-elect Paul Young this week. Young discussed plans for his transition team, whether he intends to retain Memphis police chief C.J. Davis and MLGW CEO Doug McGowen, and his vision for reducing crime in our city. Young wants to adopt the same sense of urgency to reduce crime that we had when fighting the COVID pandemic.

Sabor Caribe will show the Venezuela vs. Brazil World Cup qualifying match tonight at 7:30. $5 margaritas, $8 mojitos.

The Grizzlies are hiring a manager of event security.

That’s the news for now. Back tomorrow with more.

Wednesday update #2

A Philly cheesesteak flatbread is the special at Local on Main today.

They also have their usual lunch special, a pork chop, grilled or fried, with 2 sides.

Turn on channel 13 at 4 PM today and cheer on a Memphis family competing in Family Feud.

11 people were inducted into the Memphis Sports Hall of Fame last night at AutoZone Park. Among them were former Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown and former WMC-TV sports director Jack Eaton.

The Grizzlies got a 108-102 preseason win over the Milwaukee Bucks last night. Next up: The Grizz hit the road to play Atlanta Thursday at 6:30 PM (TV: NBA TV).

A man was carjacked in broad daylight at the gas station on Riverside Monday morning.

A Maserati with a small dog in it was stolen from the 400 block of Front Street around 7 Tuesday evening.

This is my second update of the day, so keep scrolling for more news.

Wednesday update: Is Daddy Ass coming to FedExForum?

This first news item is for all my service industry friends. The Jameson Service Industry Ball makes its return Monday, October 30 from 6 to 10 PM. This year the ball will be at 507 Lux Lounge in the basement of Curry N Jerk, 150 Monroe (former Bon Ton Cafe location).

  • DJ Mylon will be spinning the tunes
  • Halloween costumes encouraged
  • Games, prizes, treats, swag

All service industry folks are invited to attend – it’s free, but you must fill out this RSVP form to be put on the list.

Looking for a coffee shop in the Downtown core? The folks at Boycott Coffee at 240 Madison would love to see you. One of the owners posted the following to Facebook:

It’s time again to wish a happy day to the Kimberlys, Kimsters, and Kimmy Kims reading this blog. It’s National Kimberly Day.

It’s National Sausage Pizza Day. Aldo’s Pizza Pies would be a good place to celebrate, as would Ferraro’s or Slim & Husky’s.

It’s also Southern Food Heritage Day. Alcenia’s restaurant on Main just north of I-40 would be my celebration recommendation.

Coffee shop Vice & Virtue has closed its stand at Tom Lee Park, the CA’s Jennifer Chandler reports. V&V’s owner said the coffee shop “just wasn’t the right fit” for the park. The Tom Lee Park Welcome Center will move into the stand previously occupied by the shop.

Not Downtown but worth a short trip: The Hi-Tone will give away 1000 grilled cheese sandwiches on Thursday, October 19 between 6 and 9 PM. Here’s what you need to know:

  • One free sandwich per customer
  • Dine-in only, unless you’re donating your free sandwich to someone in need
  • Must show proof that you shared November 5’s Memphis Grilled Cheese Fest on Facebook

Memphis to the ACC? Might be a possibility under the right circumstances.

Green Beetle is staffing up for Grizzlies season. They are looking to hire nighttime and weekend servers.

Bishop will be closed for dinner service today due to a private event.

Frank Bruno will play Eight & Sand Lounge this evening from 7 to 11.

Feast & Graze is hiring a charcuterie board artist & catering assistant. Contract; November and December only; 7 AM-3 PM Tuesday=Saturday; $15/hour.

Let’s wrap up this post with a bit of trivia from my favorite fake sport.

In the late 1990s, pro wrestler “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn was a decorated tag team champion as a member of the New Age Outlaws and D-Generation X.

Fast-forward to 2023… Gunn, now in his late fifties, is still an active competitor in AEW, the number-two wrestling promotion in North America. His two sons wrestle in AEW as well.

And ol’ Billy has a new ring name that reflects his status as a family man.

“Daddy Ass.”

You just can’t make this stuff up. Think I’m kidding? See the results of Saturday’s AEW event.

AEW, by the way, will be at FedExForum a week from Saturday. It’s unknown for sure if Gunn/Daddy Ass will appear, but he is on the graphic advertising AEW’s Collision show to be broadcast from FedExForum that night.

And that’ll wrap it up. Very possibly back in the late morning/early afternoon with a second Wednesday update.

Tuesday update

Momma’s, “the diner and dive off 55,” will be closed today for scheduled maintenance. The restaurant will reopen bright and early at 6:30 AM Wednesday for breakfast. In the meantime, you can visit Momma’s sibling restaurants Aldo’s Pizza Pies, Slider Inn, and Bardog Tavern today.

Feelin’ Memphis has glasses for viewing Saturday’s solar eclipse. We will only see a partial eclipse here in Memphis; the full-on path for the eclipse will pass through Eugene, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to the DM, the eclipse will be about 60% visible in Memphis at its peak, lasting from 10:32 AM to 1:35 PM.

Today is Ada Lovelace Day. She is generally considered the world’s first computer programmer. She described practical uses for a general-purpose analytical engine Charles Babbage invented in the 19th century.

As if nerds needed another reason to celebrate, it’s also Powers of Ten Day. Whether 100, one million, or 0.00000001 is your favorite, enjoy.

And it’s Squid and Cuttlefish Day. I recommend celebrating with calamari at Bardog, the Majestic, or the Fish.

Prayers for Father Dexter Noblefranca of Downtown’s St. Patrick’s Catholic Church… he was part of a group on a pilgrimage to Israel. In Jerusalem, they heard what they thought were fireworks but later learned was Israel’s anti-missile defense system activating. Their trip, needless to say, has been cut short and they hope to travel home today.

Oh Sweets Skincare, a couple of doors down from Bardog on Monroe, will host a Barbie & Me Mix & Whip Party from 11 AM to 4 PM Thursday.

The CA has a look at the Downtown Memphis Commission’s plan to replace Paul Young. Young, who was elected the next mayor of Memphis last week, is the DMC’s chief executive officer.

Downtown’s Hyatt Caption Hotel is hiring cooks. 1-2 years of previous line experience, a culinary degree, and previous hotel experience are all pluses.

The Brooks Museum of Art will change its name once it moves Downtown. Thereafter it will be known as Memphis Art Museum.

Maciel’s will open a location at 3397 Summer next spring. They want to be more of a taqueria at that location than the original Downtown one, with an increased number of tacos on the menu. The owner sees an opportunity to connect with Memphis’ large Hispanic community in the new location.

The Golden Girls return to the Orpheum on March 28. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

There was a thread on Facebook yesterday about where to get soup in Memphis. Downtown-related responses included

  • Bishop has good French onion soup
  • McEwen’s for their soup of the day
  • Beer cheese soup when Bardog has it on special (a followup comment recommends to dip the sliders in it)
  • Another followup comment recommends dipping a Bardog grilled cheese sandwich in tomato bisque
  • Gumbo at Jerry Lee’s club on Beale

I’ll add a response of my own: The Caldo Tlalpeno (chicken tortilla soup) from Maciel’s.

DJ Cashmere plays Ibis Wednesday night from 8 to 11.

Jason Sims (Witnesse) plays Eight & Sand Lounge at Central Station Hotel Friday night.

Blind Bear is replacing the floor underneath its bar during the early part of this week. Everything in/on/around the bar has been moved or covered up and a temporary bar has been set up where the big poker table is. You can still sit at the main bar, in one of the 8 or so seats not in front of covered equipment – you’ll just have to get up and walk over to the temp bar to get a drink or order food. I think they said Wednesday is the target date for having the repair work done.

I do not yet have the list of specials the Blind Bear will run this week. I hope to publish an update late this afternoon listing them. I heard Tony was thinking about lasagna for this week, but I don’t have that confirmed.

Otherwise, that’ll do it for now. Back this afternoon or tomorrow.

Monday update #2

The DM has a list of the best places in the Memphis metro to see fall colors. Closest to Downtown is Elmwood Cemetery, which will have a guided fall tour on Saturday, November 18 and 25.

Memphis-based Blue Note Bourbon is expanding.

MPD says that a Peabody valet parking attendant stole guns out of cars he was being paid to park.

The I-55 bridge (“the old bridge:) is back open following construction over the weekend.

Come to the Cossitt Library and express yourself using Big Feelings Pineapple!

It’s on the gray Young Adult Fiction shelf in the southeast corner of the library’s second floor. Notice there is no pizza in the photo. Big Feelings Pineapple does not belong on pizza. Nor does any other pineapple!

The Grizzlies picked up a 127-122 overtime win in last night’s preseason game vs. Indiana. D-Rose was said to have looked good as he started and dropped in 13. The Grizzlies host Milwaukee Tuesday at 7 in the next preseason game. We’ll get to see how Dame Time and the Greek Freak work together.

There’s a petition on Change.org to ban horse-drawn carriages in Downtown Memphis.

The basketball Tigers have been picked to finish second in the AAC. Florida Atlantic is regarded as the top team in the conference. Four Tigers picked up individual preseason honors.

Good news for Steve the squirrel who hangs out in front of Local on Main: It’s been found that male squirrels get smarter in the fall.

Employee walkouts at Walgreens may happen this week.

This is my second update today, so keep scrolling if it’s your first time here this Monday. Back tomorrow if I find more news.

Canadian Thanksgiving update

Rather than argue whether it’s Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day, why not look to our neighbors to the north for inspiration about what to call today?

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Day!

I recommend celebrating the day at Kooky Canuck, which will have a special plate today including turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, and a buttered roll.

If turkey’s not your thing, it’s International Beer and Pizza Day too.

From StyleBlueprint: Meet Kristen & Lindsey Archer of ARCHd, the gift shop which recently opened at 65 Monroe.

Broadway musical Funny Gitl will be at the Orpheum Tuesday through Sunday.

The Mersey Beatles return to Memphis on Thursday for a show at the Halloran Centre. This is the Beatles tribute band that is Liverpool-born, and which held a residency in that city’s Cavern Club, just as the Beatles themselves did from 1961 to 1963. This tour will feature music from 1962 to 1966, so everything from “Love Me Do” to Revolver is fair game.

Poker players at Blind Bear get extra chips if they order beers or shots. Note that you only have to ORDER them, not CONSUME them. So if you were to say, “Put a PBR and a Jameson on my tab and send them to Paul sitting at the bar over there,” you could totally do that.

There’s a cat veterinarian conference at the Renasant Convention Center this coming weekend. The theme this year is an exciting one: The Ins and Outs of Feline Nutrition and Gastroenterology

I remember a Hollywood Squares question from my youth: If you give your cat a sip of beer every day for a year, what’ll happen? Answer: You’ll have a dead cat.

Love classic cars? Then you should check out Edge Motorfest on Saturday.

Whoever wins that Memphis-Tulane game is going to be in great position to contend for the Group of Five berth into a New Year’s Six bowl.

I wonder what the last time was that numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 all played (and not each other) at the 11:00 hour?

The Dallas Cowgirls proved last night that they are PREtenders, not CONtenders. They blow out the bad teams, giving their fans false hope; but then they face a good team and get blown out themselves. I bet Dallas fan Butt Slut #1 cried herself to sleep last night.

That’ll do it for now. Happy Monday or whatever you call today.

Sunday update

Big trouble in the Middle East this weekend… Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel, taking a number of Israeli civilians and soldiers hostage in the process. Israel retaliated, striking Gaza.

Israel is a Jewish state in a neighborhood full of Arab states. A lot of people who live in those Arab states think Israel shouldn’t have the right to exist. Israel has one of the strongest militaries in the world, but still, it relies on allies from outside the region, such as the U.S.

There are those who, for many years, have wanted to see an Israel vs. whoever conflict escalate into World War III in order to destabilize the world powers. I bet Putin is excited about this. And the mullahs in Iran. And Kim Jong Un.

One more fact that makes this so scary – Israel has nuclear weapons.

Keep an eye on this developing story. And now, on to local news…

Memphis 901 FC got an important 4-0 win over El Paso last night.  The club’s final regular-season match is Friday in New Mexico.

WREG has a look at the mural makeover The Edge District got yesterday thanks to Paint Memphis.

Curtis Givens III, a local 4-star high school basketball prospect many believed would be headed to the U of M to play for Penny, surprised many with an announcement yesterday. Givens will don a Tigers uniforms, but it will be a purple-and-gold uniform of LSU.

I saw this in Recomendo’s newsletter this weekend at thought it might be of interest to Memphians: The Bug Bite Thing. It’s a suction tool that, when applied right after a mosquito bites you, sucks out the poison it injects into you as it bites. Therefore, you don’t ger itchy.

Mayor-elect Paul Young made an appearance at the Grizzlies’ open practice yesterday. Young is a season ticket holder.

Young shared his plans for Memphis with Action News 5.

Tomorrow is Columbus Day, so expect banks and government offices to be closed and don’t expect mail delivery.

Neat book I found at the library last week: The History Book. It breaks world history down int digestible chunks with timelines, lists, and related topics.

Last week I noted that Melissa had been promoted to Bardog’s GM, and I wondered who would take over her happy hour bar shifts. Now I know:

  • Allie Cat will do Monday and Tuesday happy hour;
  • And it’ll be Dani Wednesday-Friday.

Now the question is, who’ll take over Allie’s Monday and Tuesday morning shifts?

I’m pleased to report that Dani and Butt Slut #1 made it back safely from their New Orleans trip. “OF COURSE we had to go to a bar Sunday that had 5 big-screen TVs so she could watch her stupid football team,” Dani said, referring to Butt Slut #1’s Dallas Cowboys.

Who the Cowgirls got today… San Francisco in NBC’s Sunday Night Football game. I’ll be rooting for the Niners in that one.

The power ent out in the Downtown core this morning, south of Monroe. I took a walk about 9:30 and ran into Miss Su of The Little Tea Shop. She said workers had told her the power might be out all day. UGH – no Blind Bear on Sunday? What would I do?

Back home about 10:15, though, I looked out the window and saw the traffic light at Main and Union was working. Power had been restored! And here I am with my MacBook at the Bear, putting the finishing touches on this post.

Back tomorrow, probably. Maybe even later today.
