Thur update: Job search help, poker, Travis Mann Band, India Fest, lunchtime fashion show, Trolley Night, MarksMenus hiring

Last night I was catching up on Air Traffic Mike’s latest posts, and he found a fantastic resource that I wanted to share with my readers too. On the second Monday of every month from 9 AM to 12 PM, and the fourth Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, the Central Library has a JobLab. This is an open-door computer lab that provides assistance to job seekers, including assistance with resume writing and formatting, help with job-related searches, and help filling out online job applications. For those who have been frustrated with job searches for some time, this could be a real hand up.

Keep in mind that the fourth Thursday of the month is TODAY, so if you’re job hunting, you need to get down there. You’ll need to bring all data relevant to your work history (addresses and phone numbers of previous employers, that kind of thing), and you’ll need to bring your own storage media (USB memory stick would probably work best, although they probably still have computers with floppy drives).

Speaking of jobs… MarksMenus is hiring. It looks like they’re looking for either an entry-level designer with some programming experience, or an entry-level programmer with some design skills. Check their blog post for more details. This is a startup that has done pretty much everything right. They would be great people to work with.

I went to poker night at Bardog last night, and this time, I did much better. It was the “super satellite,” with the winner earning a seat at next week’s final table. There were about 25 players and I managed to finish third. Part of it was that I was getting good cards – in the three hours I was there I saw AA, KK, and QQ. Also, since there were people there I played with two weeks ago when I had a run of trashy hands, I was able to take advantage of the tight/passive table image they associated with me. Third was not good enough to win a prize, but it felt good to go deep in live play.

I think I’ll head south to Calhoun’s to play in their poker tournament tonight. Maybe I’ll take along one of the gift certificates I won there previously, and drink PBR on OPM (Other People’s Money).

The Travis Mann Band from Nashville plays Blues City Cafe tonight at 9. The bass player is “Slick” Joe Fick, who you may remember from The Dempseys. I haven’t got a chance to hear them yet, but based on photos I’ve seen, it looks like they have a similar style.

For those of you who like to experience different cultures, India Fest is Saturday, way out east at the Agricenter. There will be film shorts from India, as well as dance and music representing eight different Indian states. Food samples will be offered throughout the day, with cooking demonstrations from 11 to 1 and 2 to 4. Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

If you want to catch up on the latest in women’s fashion, plan to have lunch at the Majestic tomorrow, Friday, August 27. Christine by Shelton Clothiers will be there, previewing some of the newest fall fashions while you eat.

The theme for tomorrow night’s South Main Trolley Night is “New Orleans White Linen.” Dress in white for one more night and listen to jazz bands, brass bands, one-man bands and street performers. At 9 you can watch the movie Stingray Sam in the grassy field next to Harry’s Detour. They’ll be collecting donations for Habitat for Humanity of Memphis.

Also, if you’re a South Main Association member, come to the parking lot next to Bluff City Coffee at Trolley Night. They’ll have complimentary Ghost River beer for members, and they’ll be grilling hamburgers. Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up. If you’re not an SMA member, you can pay $5 for burgers and beer.

Off to lunch, which will have to be quick since I spent 20 minutes typing this post. I’m thinking Popeye’s for some Cajun rice.
