A chilling reminder of what it means to serve

Well, I just had to scrap a post I had saved in Drafts.

I was going to talk about how I hadn’t spent enough time on this blog expressing my gratitude to those who have served this country. Soldiers, Marines, airmen, sailors, those in the National Guard and Coast Guard. Our police officers, firefighters and EMTs. I even had an image of a hottie in an American flag tube top dress.

But last night, we got a chilling reminder of what it means to serve. A reminder that happened all too close to home.

About 7 PM, there was a disturbance at the Doubletree Hotel at Third and Union. Officer Timothy Warren, one of the EDU (Entertainment District Unit) police officers, responded. As Officer Warren was in a stairwell, a suspect stepped out of a connecting doorway and shot him in the head. The officer was pronounced dead at the Med. He was the first MPD officer to die in the line of duty in seven years. He’d been on the force since July 2003.

My condolences and prayers to Officer Warren’s family and friends, and especially to his fellow officers. I simply cannot imagine how it must feel.

My deepest appreciation for the officers of the EDU and all the officers of the Memphis Police Department. Thank you for keeping Downtown safe, allowing me to go out and do the things I do every day.
