BBQ Fest park hours

I’ve been asked what time the park closes for BBQ Fest three times in the past 24 hours, so I’ll go ahead and post the answer.

Wednesday: 10:30 (private party – Friends & Family Night)

Thursday: midnight

Friday: midnight

Saturday: 10

I’ve also been asked when is the best night to go. My vote would be for Thursday. Thursday and Friday are the big party nights, but Thursday is more relaxed because you have fewer stupid people and freeloaders to deal with. Actually, it depends on what booths you plan on visiting. If they have “sponsor night” when they cater to and wait on their sponsors, it may be Thursday and it may be difficult to get in those booths. Our team doesn’t have a sponsor night – they party with us all weekend – so for my money Thursday is best.

All right. The BBQ team just sent out an alert asking for help. I’m on it and ready to work HARD! Heading to the booth location now. My map shows the location at “northwest corner of Second and Peabody Place.” I’m not sure that’s 100% accurate but I have to go with what I have. Maybe by tomorrow I’ll have better directions.

Gumbo @ Scratch food truck

I just walked over to Court Avenue, where the Scratch food truck is parked between Second and Third, just east of Court Square.

They had today’s menu posted and I gave it a look.

I decided to give the gumbo a try. Their menu changes but I understand the gumbo is one of the staples of the menu.

I’m enjoying it at home now as I type this. Very tasty chicken and sausage gumbo. It reminds me of the gumbos I had when I visited New Orleans for a business trip two years ago.

The Memphis Connect blog has more info about Scratch. You can follow the truck on Facebook and Twitter.

Random pics from this weekend that I forgot were on my phone, until just now

Nap time at the Goose

Kevin Cerrito and Ciara in Grizzlies headband. Kevin, by the way, hosts trivia tonight at Ferraro’s Pizzeria and Pub. Prizes for the winners and for the best team name, and $1 PBR and Rolling Rock. 8 PM start time.

Beth and Amanda at the Blind Bear

Kelly and her dad at the Bear. As usual, no tube top and plenty of excuses from Kelly.

Otto with his hair braided

Pizza from the Goose. The Silly Goose changed its menu about three weeks ago and really expanded their pizza selection. This is the Mexican/southwestern pizza (can’t remember its exact name). You can get it with chicken or beef.

In other news, if you’re wondering where the black smoke was coming from this morning Downtown, there was a junkyard fire at Chelsea and Breedlove.

Congratulations to the Oklahoma City Thunder on whipping the L.A. Lakers last night, beating them by 29. Also congrats to James Harden on winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award. Harden, of course, returned recently from a concussion thanks to a vicious elbow by Ron Artest near the end of the regular season. When asked if he would shake Harden’s hand before the game, Artest said that he doesn’t shake hands with substitutes. Artest should have changed his name to Metta World Piece, because he’s the biggest piece of shit in the NBA.

Lunch plans have been decided. The Scratch food truck is parked at Second and Court. Follow them on Twitter at @MobileScratch.

Who’s going to earn a Certificate of Achievement from the Center for Tube Top Excellence this week?

I’m going to start today with a link to the MemphisWeather.net forecast. Look at Thursday-Saturday, the three days BBQ Fest is open to the public. Mostly sunny, all 3 days. Upper 80s Thursday, near 90 Friday and Saturday. Mid 60s at night, and really it will still be in the 70s when the park closes and dip into the 60s about 5 AM. With a forecast like this, there is no excuse for not wearing a tube top. NONE.

Guy Fieri was in town last week filming an episode of his Food Network Show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. He visited six Memphis-area restaurants – see this Daily News blog post for details – and two of them were Downtown. South of Beale and Rizzo’s Diner were among the restaurants to receive a visit. Can’t wait to see the show. Michael Patrick invited me to be part of the filming for Rizzo’s but I couldn’t get away from work. If you haven’t been to SOB and Rizzo’s, you’re missing out on some mighty good food. By the way, Rizzo’s announced that they now have the back room air conditioned and can accept large parties of 20-25.

Last night I was surfing Facebook on my phone, and one of the Downtown Blue Monkey’s regulars posted that they’ve booked Jeremy Stanfill to play Saturday night. What a MASSIVE improvement over a year ago when they had karaoke on Saturdays. The Monkey may actually be on my radar for something to do after BBQ Fest wraps up at 10 Saturday night. What a pleasure it will be to hear a professional musician there. A year ago you’d walk in and think you were hearing a cat who just had its tail stepped on… then you’d realize it was Robo singing “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.”

By the way, for those of you who miss karaoke, you can get your fill of it Wednesdays at Thai Bistro on Madison. But a better plan would be to walk across the street for Diamond Dave’s bingo night at the Brass Door.

In other live music news, 1960s British Invasion band Jeffrey and the Pacemakers will bring the jangle to Downtown Huey’s Sunday night at 8:30.

Historian Jimmy Ogle leads a free walking tour of the Pinch District at 11:45. Meet at the Main & Overton trolley stop.

Councilman Edmund Ford has proposed a $2 million grant to help redevelop the Chisca Hotel into apartments. It would go along with the $17 million in private funds investors have raised. Details here. This is perhaps our last chance to save the Chisca. I hope it works out.

I walked past the future home of Aldo’s Pizza Pies yesterday. Progress is coming along nicely and I hear they will be hiring soon.

Last night I returned to Silly Goose poker for the 7:30 game, and my run of bad luck continued. With people out for BBQ Fest it was a smaller game than usual, just one 8-handed table in play. I made it all the way to heads up, and on about the third hand of two-handed play I was dealt 4-3. That’s not a great hand but when you’re heads up you have to relax your starting hand standards. So I called and the flop came 5-6-7. Of course, I was very happy to go all-in with that flop! My opponent called with top pair and a draw to a higher straight – an absolutely beautiful call because there were so many cards that could improve her to the best hand. By the river she’d hit a full house to win and claim the $50 gift certificate prize.

Congrats on a fine win.

Earlier in the evening, I’d been at Pint Nite at the Saucer. One of the girls who’d been working day shift and was now off duty came in with a friend, both wearing tube top dresses. THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE, PEOPLE. Tube tops and tube top dresses. In other Saucer news, Amy told the UPS guy that he has a big package.

I wrapped up the evening with a burger at the Blind Bear. Not just any burger, but one topped with pepper jack cheese. Damn Michael Bean can cook. I think, however, that Bean should supplement his income by publishing a book titled “101 Ways to Be a Pest at the Poker Table.”

All right, time to hit Publish and jump in the shower. I’ll be at happy hour at the Saucer at 4, poker with Jamie at the Bear at 8. Undecided where to eat lunch as of yet.

BYO Sandwich @ Bleu

Today I decided to try Bleu for lunch. Bleu is the restaurant inside the Westin Hotel, across the street from the FedExForum. They have a B.Y.O. (Build Your Own) Sandwich menu that I have seen several other bloggers write about, but since I’m rarely Downtown at lunch I had not had the chance to try it before today.

(Click to see image in a larger size, although I’m going to tell you all about the menu below)

Ordering the BYO Sandwich is an 8-step process.

In Step 1, you pick your protein. Choices are Angus beef, marinated chicken breast, ahi tuna, fried catfish, portabello mushroom cap, or sliced sirloin. I picked the sirloin.

In Step 2, you choose your temperature. Rare, medium rare, medium, medium well, or well. Obviously this step is skipped for the meats that need to be cooked thoroughly, like the chicken. I asked for medium rare, my preferred temp for a quality cut of beef.

In Step 3, you choose your bun. Choices include a Kaiser roll, whole wheat bun, poor boy, or tortilla wrap. You also have the option of paying $3 extra for a grilled cheese bun. I got the Kaiser roll.

In Step 4, you choose a sauce. Options are chipotle mayo, sweet Thai chili sauce, spicy fancy sauce, garlic aioli, BBQ sauce, or salsa. My pick was the chipotle mayo.

In Step 5, you choose your cheese. Choices are American yellow, aged cheddar, Jarisberg Swiss, sharp provolone, bleu, or goat cheese. I got the Swiss.

In Step 6, you choose up to three toppings. You choose from iceberg lettuce, arugula, sliced pickles, cole slaw, Bermuda onions, sliced jalapenos, caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, tomatoes, or roasted red peppers. I selected the caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms, and roasted red peppers.

In Step 7. you pick your premium toppings ($1 each). These consist of avocado, a fried egg, Applewood smoked bacon, onion rings, or a fried tomato. I asked for the onion rings.

In step 8, you choose your side. Choices are hand-cut fries, potato salad, fruit cup, sweet potato fries, or cole slaw. I got the cole slaw.

Here’s the sandwich I built:

This was one delicious sandwich. The sirloin was tender, and was properly cooked medium rare as ordered. The steak was juicy, which kind of made the sandwich fall apart but I didn’t mind. I think if I got this sandwich again, I’d select a different bun, maybe the poor boy, that would hold together better. The chipotle mayo was a nice accent, and the onion rings on top were worth the extra dollar.

Service was friendly and quick. One thing I like is that the server brought my check at the time I brought my meal. Many people eating there are going to be on lunch hour from work, and already having the check handy helped to speed things up. However, the server also made it clear that if I wanted anything else, he’d be happy to get it.

I liked the decor of the restaurant as well – not surprisingly, since blue is my favorite color. A very positive experience, and a lunch that I would happily recommend.

Mon update: USFL, Blind Bear music, Wilco

Yeah, I know I promised interesting posts this week but I just don’t have much fuel in the tank for it today. Let’s just get to the news.

The Memphis Business Journal reports that the USFL is making a comeback (maybe) and if it happens, Memphis is on the short list for a football team. The league existed in the 1980s and brought pro football to the spring and summer months. Fun fact: Pro wrestler Lex Luger played for the Memphis USFL franchise that was here in the ’80s.

The Blind Bear has added live entertainment on Mondays. Martin & Taylor take the stage at 7 and play until 10.

Wilco plays the Mud Island Ampitheater Saturday. Buy tickets here.

All right, time to go outside and see if there are any food trucks around. If not I’ll probably walk down to Bleu and try the build your own sandwich menu.

Ladies: Show your support for the Grizzlies by wearing a tube top

Game 7 is at the FedExForum at noon. Us versus the Clippers. Winner to move on to Round 2 and face the San Antonio Spurs. Ladies, the best way to show your support is by putting on a tube top. If you have a tube top on, you’re excused from putting on the “Believe Memphis” shirt you’ll find on your seat. Nothing should cover up a tube top, ever.

You are required to jump up and down a lot, though. And wave your growl towel.

I am absolutely at a loss for where to watch the game. Blind Bear announced they’d open at 10 within minutes of Game 6 ending. At the time I made the decision to watch Game 7 there, because I didn’t think the Saucer would step up. But they did, announcing on Twitter last night that they’d open at 10 today. And Amy is bartending. On the other hand my “DAWG” John D said he’d probably be at the Bear.

I guess I’ll have one Pacifico at the Saucer at 10, then wander over to the Bear to get a good seat for the game.

Don’t forget that poker with Poker Jon happens at Brass Door at 6 tonight. Also, they open in one minute (it’s 8:59 as I post this) for the Arsenal match.

A little bit of news (Blind Bear/Grizzlies) and a lot of opinion

The Grizzlies won at Los Angeles last night and forced a Game 7 in the playoff series. It will be at noon Sunday at the FedExForum, and tickets are on sale now. Game will be broadcast on ABC.

The noon start time presents an interesting dilemma, because many Downtown bars open at noon or later. If they keep their normal opening time tomorrow, they’ll miss out on pre-game sales. Last night I watched Game 6 at the Blind Bear, and as soon as the Grizzlies won they immediately stepped up. The Bear is ditching their usual 3 PM start time on Sunday and opening at 10 AM. In making this decision, they have managed to do the impossible – they have found a way to make me not be at the Flying Saucer at noon on Sunday. Bartender Christina won’t be happy, but that’s the way it is. So anyway, whether you’re going to the game or not, come by the Bear before Game 7. They’ll be serving brunch and lunch, with $3 mimosas, $3 Bloody Marys, and beer bucket specials to be announced. You can reserve a room or table for tomorrow on their website.

Okay. That’s the news. Now it’s time for some opinions.

1) Part of the reason I’m not going to see Christina at noon tomorrow is I’m mad at her. This morning I posted to Twitter, “All right people. If I don’t see some serious tube top action in Downtown Memphis today, I’m going to be disappointed. Make it happen.”

Christina responded, “It’s raining Paul”

When the actual correct response was, “I have a tube top on Paul (link to pic)”

Therefore, I’m mad at Christina.

2) If you run a bar in Downtown Memphis, and your normal start time is 12 or later, and you don’t open early for the pre-Grizzlies crowd tomorrow, you don’t like making money.

3) A few minutes ago, I got out of the shower with wet hair and walked to Walgreens for my Mountain Dew fix. As I was doing so, I thought how one of my readers would probably never do that, because she would worry that people would judge her for being out in public with wet hair. My goal for this summer is to free people from the jail cells that exist only in their own minds.

4) As I woke up this morning on my first full day of vacation, I came to a conclusion: Two weeks vacation a year is not enough. I’m not griping about the company I work for, because they’re just doing what everyone else does. It’s American culture that needs to change. People need more than two weeks off a year to recharge. I keep contact with several recruiters and know they read this blog. I have a message for them: I’m not actively looking right now, but if I ever am, I’m going to demand 3 weeks vacation from day one, with a raise to 4 weeks vacation after 2 years.

5) Murphy’s Law of Walgreens: After you’ve already paid, and the cashier is handing you your receipt and there are three people in line behind you, you discover that there’s a new enchilada flavor of Doritos.

6) Regarding that table reservation link near the top of this post: There will probably be people who reserve a table at the Bear, then Facebook post the “VIP Reserved” sign with their group’s nickname to show how cool they are. Hey guys, is the table actually NAMED AFTER YOU? Yeahdidntthinkso.

All right, that’s enough opinion for now. I’ve told you what’s happening at noon tomorrow already. My plans for noon today look like this:

Brunch with Panda Manda. Get your ass to Bardog and join me for a PBR.

The filter is OFF.

My vacation has officially started, and as I always do with my BBQ Fest vacations, the filter is completely OFF. The professional guy who sits in a cubicle and posts professional-sounding updates during his lunch break? Yeah that guy might as well be dead for the next 9 days. The information will still be there but it will be in a raunchier format. It’s open season on anything and everything. In the blog, on Facebook, on Twitter, and in person. Watch out.

Then again, I called a girl “Tits McGee” in front of her dad Wednesday night, so I’m not sure the filter was ever on to much of an extent.
