Wednesday update

Yay… little barky dog didn’t get let out until 7:05 this morning, by which time I was already wide awake and about to get up anyway. I looked out my window to try and figure out what breed it is, but I couldn’t see it.

The Grizzlies hit the road to play Oklahoma City tonight at 7. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southeast.

Cordelia’s Market will host Halloween Trivia Thursday, October 24 from 6:30 to 9 PM. Some of the categories will include Halloween movies, Halloween songs, and the history of Halloween. Space is limited so sign up in advance if you want to play. Teams of 6 or less are encouraged.

The 6th annual Making Strides Charity Poker Night happens tomorrow at 6 PM at the Blind Bear. This event will benefit American Cancer Society – Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Top three finishers will win prizes. This how the game will work:

Buy-in:

  • $20 donation gets you a starting stack of 2000 chips
  • $30 donation gets you a starting stack of 4000 chips

One rebuy allowed:

  • $10 donation = 1000 extra chips
  • $20 donation = 2000 extra chips
  • Rebuys may be by blind, instead of just one, based on attendance

If you want to play real poker, rather than “I’ll go all in with 9-4 offsuit and rebuy a bazillion times if I lose” like bar poker typically is, this is your chance.

Beer news: Max’s Sports Bar got a keg of Bell’s Uberon, a beer aged in Traverse City Whiskey barrels to coax out the flavors. It’s said to be a copper-colored beer, with whiskey characteristics that portray woody, vanilla, and toffee flavors. It packs a punch, weighing in at a powerful 10.30% alcohol by volume. Mike who bartends there says it’s the best beer ever. Um, Mike, it couldn’t possibly be more than the second best beer ever. You’re forgetting about PBR.

Not a Downtown thing but worth mentioning anyway: Iconic Midtown bar Zinnie’s is set to reopen November 1. This would be the corner bar at Madison and Belvedere that was Old Zinnie’s, not the building next door that was Zinnie’s East.

It’s being reported that Hasheem Thabeet, the Memphis Grizzlies 2009 #2 draft pick who turned out to be an absolute bust, has signed an NBA G-League deal. He last played NBA ball in 2014. As long as the deal is not with the Memphis Hustle… geez, Chris Wallace would attend every Hustle game and chant “CALL HIM UP! CALL HIM UP!”

Meritan at 345 Adams is holding a career fair today. They are hiring for Case Manager, Family Model Caregiver (full-time), home care specialists (part-time), home care specialists (personal care attendants, part-time), and RNs (full-time).

Curious Bike Tours will host a Downtown Memphis bike tour tonight starting at 6:45. Meet at 6 W. G.E. Patterson.

That’s it for now. Back tomorrow.
