Okay, let’s see if I can make this happen.
First off, hair stylist recc if you’re looking for one: Go see Brinley at Downtown Gould’s. I had my first appt. with her Saturday. As I sat down in her chair, I pulled out my phone and showed her a music video. “Can you make me look like the singer?”
“Oh, fun!” she said. “Sure, I can!” And she did. NAILED it. And she was very accommodating of my disability, helping me with my backpack, getting in and out of the chair, etc. Price was slightly higher than my previous cuts at Gould’s ($55 + 20% tip), but worth every penny – wait, Trump killed the penny, worth every nickel. As far as I’m concerned, I have a regular stylist for the first time since my neighbor Beckii died 7 years ago.
Been listening to a good podcast: The history of rock in 500 songs
Cap Bar will open at 348 S. Main in mid-November. What’s that? It’s a place where you build your own baseball cap.
Jasper Float Spa has moved into the old Rachel’s space at 10 N. Main and apparently deleted “float” from its name.
So, what’ve I been doing during my 3-week blog absence?
Mostly, Parkinson’s + cellulitis has been kicking my butt. I’ve fallen a few times. My pace of walking has been cut in half.
That has presented some challenges at the Mission. It’s not a nursing home. You have to be physically able to meet its requirements, which include a mandatory daily shower (+visit to the clothes closet, undressing, and getting dressed) in 20 minutes.
Around October 1 I started feeling like a fall risk in the shower. Also, some activities (e.g. putting socks on) take me longer than most. I feared not getting done in the 20-minute time limit.
And I feared the 6-foot climb into top bunks.
So I started staying out 3, 4, 5 nights in a row. Which affected my mental health. I made vague posts to Facebook saying I was ‘so scared’ without explaining what that meant, leaving my friends unsure how to help. I was shaking too bad to post to Facebook to clarify.
A sweet friend saw me struggling to walk up South Main and took me to her home in Arkansas. I stayed there 13 days. I could have stayed longer, but I felt Downtown Memphis and my blog calling me. I’M NOT DONE.
I feel like there’s so much more I could say, but this feels like a natural spot to take a break. Back soon with more news.
