There was a fire in the kitchen at Blue Plate Cafe on Court Square this afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing some flames and a ton of smoke. As of about 4:05 MFD had it under control. No word on extent of damage yet.

The Memphis Flyer has posted an article about High Cotton’s taproom opening: High Cotton, High Times. The grand opening takes place from 4 to 10 tomorrow, and then regular hours will be Thursday 4-8, Friday 4-9, Saturday 2-10.

Lots of news about Sweetwater beer’s arrival in town, courtesy of @memphisbeerweek on Twitter. Madison Growler inside the Cash Saver has confirmed they will have $4.20 growler fills of Sweetwater 420/IPA for next week’s launch only.

The Flying Saucer will be getting in on the Sweetwater action too. On Tuesday, June 17 at 9 PM, the Saucer will be pouring 7 Sweetwater taps and will have an in-store sampling. Also, the Saucer will give a free Sweetwater beer to the first 40 people who say “don’t float the mainstream” starting at 9 PM that night. Beer sampling and a chance at a free beer? Looks like I will be skipping Blind Bear poker on Tuesday.

If you’re looking for a place to watch UFC 174 tomorrow night, Club 152 is showing it on 10 screens.

If you missed MemphiSport Live’s interview with “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner, you can listen to it online. Best part of the interview? When interviewer Dustin Starr asked about Steiner’s recent stint in TNA Impact Wrestling, and he said, “Don’t talk about that, that’s horseshit wrestling.” HAHAHA! By the way… speaking of local… Tube Top Month was not invented in New York, the fashion capital of the world. Nor was it invented in L.A., the home of the silver screen. Nor Chicago nor San Francisco. Nope. Tube Top Month got its start right here in Memphis. When you support Tube Top Month, you are supporting a locally-grown, grass-roots concept that managed to survive into its 10th year.

Speaking of tube tops…

Christie knows what month this is! Her landlord could stand to take a few notes on how to wear tube tops/tube top dresses.

This week some friends of mine wanted to watch the sun set, and they figured the top of Beale Street Landing would be the perfect place to do it. Several others were gathered there as well. However, a few minutes before the sun touched the horizon, a security guard came by and told them, “Beale Street Landing is closing, you have to leave.” They asked if they could at least stay to see the sunset, and the guard said, “No. The landing closes at sundown.” My friends were disappointed, and there was a little girl crying, “Daddy! I want to see the sunset!” Seriously??? We paid $40+ million in taxes for this thing and we can’t even enjoy it? Why can’t the landing close 15 minutes after sunset?

IMPORTANT PBR NEWS: The Brass Door will have $5 PBR pitchers during World Cup games today. They’ll also have $3 pints, $10 buckets, $5 cocktails, and $20 wine bottles.

It’s official. Sweetwater beer is coming to Memphis.

This weekend, however, I am more concerned with local beer, particularly High Cotton on Monroe whose taproom opens tomorrow at 4. The Facebook event listing shows 925 people going as of the time I’m typing this, and it is a very diverse crowd. Among my 51 Facebook friends listed as “going,” I see people I knew from MPACT Memphis a decade ago, my Congressman, Saucer girls, restaurant and bar owners, folks from the international crowd, and owners of other breweries. The BBQ team will be represented by our lead booth artist, booth construction workhorse “Mr. Load-in,” and my teammate who thinks I talk about tube tops too much (she also thinks the Cookie Monster talks about cookies too much).

Important note: The taproom is credit card only, so bring plastic if you want to drink.

You know who I bet is going to benefit greatly from the taproom opening? Kudzu’s. I hate to admit it but in my 12 years as a Downtowner I have not been to Kudzu’s even once. I have nothing against the place, and I have a feeling I’d really like it if I went. It’s that there are many other places for me to go which are much closer to home. But now, when I walk down to the taproom, I will probably think “Might as well check out Kudzu’s while I’m over here.” I bet a lot of others will too.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom plays on the Orpheum’s big screen tonight at 7. Come at 6 to play trivia.

World Cup games start today. The Brass Door has announced a 10 AM opening time every day from now until June 26 for the games. During the games there will be $3 pints, $10 beer buckets, and giant TVs on with full sound. They posted a full lineup of this weekend’s games.

Last night Daniel told me the Silly Goose will open at 2 today for the World Cup, although happy hour bartender Jessica texted me and said he told her 2:30. In any event, the Goose will be open in time for Brazil vs. Croatia. They were doing a lot of remodeling last night: painting, new construction. Of course “Mr. Load-in” from the BBQ team was right there to assist with the hard labor, lifting several 16-ounce glasses of PBR.

From FiveThirtyEight: Mexico’s and Bosnia’s players have been ordered to not have sex while at the World Cup. Does sex affect athletic performance? I know that if I were a soccer player, and a willing Brazilian tube top hottie approached me, I would find it hard to say no.

I wonder if Brazilian women wear tube tops? I have a former student from the U of M who is from Brazil. I need to message her on Facebook and ask.

The MBJ reports that Local Gastropub owner Jeff Johnson has pulled a permit to renovate the former Pa Pa Pia’s space on Union into Agave Maria, a Mexican restaurant.

The Kicks will headline the Peabody rooftop party tonight. There will also be a casting call for the Memphis Flyer fashion issue. Doors at 6, $10 cover, ladies free until 7.

It’s movie night tonight at the Orpheum: Double feature of Bridesmaids and Father of the Bride. First film starts at 7. Get there early for themed activities and cocktails.

MATA has posted alternate shuttle routes for the buses that will replace the trolleys for the next 3-6 months. Fares will remain the same and trolley passes will be accepted.

Front Street reopened at A.W. Willis reopened this morning. Crews had been repairing a sinkhole there. By the way, Memphis Public Works is now on Twitter. Follow the agency at @Memphispubworks.

Time to get back to work. I’ll be out at the Goose to watch the World Cup this evening.

The Union Mission has an urgent clothing need. They are badly in need of men’s pants of all sizes – not dress pants, but jeans and work pants. The mission is located on Poplar about a block east of Danny Thomas if you have something you want to drop off.

The big news Downtown is that MATA has suspended trolley service indefinitely. This move follows two trolley fires that have happened in the past five months. MATA will have to decide whether to renovate the current heritage trolley cars, get new heritage trolley cars, or get modern streetcars. The trolleys will be off the streets three to six months, and hybrid electric buses will replace them in the meantime. More info in this MBJ article and a second MBJ article that says replacing the trolleys could cost up to $37.5 million if MATA chooses modern streetcars.

There’s a Groupon for Yao’s China Bistro going on for the next day. You get $18 worth of food for $11. (Cue comments from Bob and Talley about the “Mr. Ryburn Special”)

I had a request for recommendations for the best places Downtown to watch the upcoming World Cup games. My picks would be the Brass Door Irish Pub, Silly Goose, and Max’s Sports Bar. Brass Door and Silly Goose both have owners who are big soccer fans. Brass Door is the best pick if you prefer non-smoking, Max’s if you prefer the South Main area, and the Goose offers the best chance to see tube tops as well as soccer.

The city is having a Riverside Drive Open Streets party this Sunday at 4 PM. There will be food trucks and music by the Mighty Souls Brass Band. Bring your walking shoes or your favorite variety of self-powered wheels (bike, skateboard, etc.)

High Cotton Brewery has announced that the Stickem and Rock’n’Dough food trucks will be on hand to feed guests at its Saturday taproom grand opening, and Personalized Poetry will be there as well. The party lasts from 4 to 10. Currently there are 777 people listed as going on the Facebook event listing for the grand opening. It better be a really big taproom.

My friend Sarah Dalesandro, who was the lead artist for our Moody Ques booth at BBQ Fest has made a post on her blog called The Bus Starts Here. It’s a look at how the “red devil” bus design was put together, from the initial idea stage to winning the Best Booth trophy.

Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta tweeted the following today: “Hey Memphibians, you thirsty?” Hmmm… could that be a hint?

The Orpheum is teaming up with the Society for Creative Anachronism to present something really special for its showing of classic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail on Friday, June 20 (showtime 7 PM). There will be pre-show activities and demonstrations of what life was like in Europe before the 17th century, including authentic costumes and armor and demos of spinning and weaving. Costumes on guests are welcomed and encouraged. Get there early for the fun.

Plans for tonight: In an unusual move, I plan to lead off at Local, assuming I get home from work on time. I ran into day shift bartender Courtney (seen on this blog in a tube top a couple of weeks ago) Sunday night and she presented a compelling argument on why I should come by and see her this week. She gets off at 6, so probably I will just do one beer at Local then wander over to the Saucer or somewhere else nearby. Undecided if I will play Blind Bear poker tonight at 8.

This one can be filed in the “How the hell did this one fly under my radar all week” category: High Cotton Brewery, the new local craft brewery at 598 Monroe, is having the grand opening of its taproom next Saturday, June 14 from 4 to 10. The Dead Soldiers will supply the live music, and according to the folks at the brewery, we should get ready to party like it’s 1877. Not sure what that means but I hope women wore tube tops in 1877.

So I’m about to have a craft brewery taproom only a 12 minute walk from my front door? Interesting. Downtown just keeps getting better and better. You can’t walk to a brewery taproom in Cordova. For that matter, you can’t walk anywhere in Cordova! Why in the world do people live out there? People with kids, I kinda get it. But, single people? Why? Is being able to drive to O’Charley’s in 5 minutes that appealing?

The Bruno Mars concert was last night. I didn’t go, but I knew that Downtown would be tube top heaven last night. Any time a singer like Bruno or JT who appeals to women comes to town, women show up Downtown dressed to the nines. I parked myself at the Saucer and took in the scenery. Afterward I went over to the Blind Bear. I knew the live music would be really good because they didn’t post a password to Facebook as they usually do for weekend nights. Instead they posted “text employee for password.” I texted Jeannette and got the password, and she told me that this was an award-winning band that I needed to come see. It was the Victor Wainright Band, winners of multiple blues awards and the Pinetop Perkins Award. I only lasted through their first set – I was very tired from the website launch that happened at work this week – but trust me, if they come back to town, you need to make plans to hear them.

Tonight’s Redbirds game will be a tribute to the original Memphis, in Egypt. The Redbirds will have on Egyptian-themed jerseys and there will be fireworks after the game. Prior to the game the players will sign autographs in the plaza. First pitch is 6:05 and the opponent is the Nashville Sounds.

The movie Mao’s Last Dancer will be shown at the Belz Museum of Judaic and Asian art today at 12:30 PM.

Danette moved here from Texas only a few months ago, but as you can see, she has assimilated well into Memphis culture. She was at the Silly Goose celebrating Tube Top Month ’14 last night.

We have ourselves another busy night in Downtown Memphis. I already blogged about the showing of Purple Rain in Court Square (8:15, food trucks at 6) and the free concert in Handy Park (6:30). The biggest event tonight, though, is Bruno Mars at the FedExForum at 8:00 tonight. Over at the Orpheum, they’ll be showing National Lampoon’s Vacation tonight at 7. Get there early for pre-show activities and themed cocktails.

Tickets for Penn & Teller at the Orpheum went on sale today. They’ll be here September 19.

Memphis Made Brewing Co. is having a tapping party for Lucid Kolsch, a sessionable German golden ale tonight at 6. They first 24 people to order pints of Lucid will get a free pint glass. Be prepared to answer Kolsch-related trivia questions if you want a shirt.

If you’re a pro wrestling fan, tune into MemphiSport Live tomorrow from 11-1 on AM 56/FM 87.7. “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner will be the special guest. The Big Bad Booty Daddy will talk about his life in the ring, his freaks, and his peaks. Holla if you hear me!

The Orpheum will show Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn on the big screen at 7. This is part of the summer movie series.

Meanwhile, over on Felicia Suzanne’s patio, there will be “Tacos & Tunes” from 7 to 10 tonight. Come down for fiesta specials & a performance by Jeremy Stanfill & Josh Cosby. Any lady who invites me to this and tells me it’s “tacos, tunes, and tube tops on the patio” would be someone I would consider marriage material.

The 6th Annual Uptown BBQ Cooking Contest happens this Saturday, June 7, in Uptown Park at Greenlaw and Uptown Streets. Prizes for best overall, best in pork, anything but, and best display for those who can’t cook but can decorate a tent. There will be celebrity judges and free hot dogs for all.

Been busy launching a new website but wanted to take a minute to get a post up. Assuming everything runs smoothly with the new site, I will be out at the usual places after work.

Even though she moved to California, the Nuh-Uh Girl has not forgotten what month this is. She wore a tube top to the crawfish boil she held this past weekend.

It looks like the Mississippi Senate Republican race is going to a runoff. Why do I care about that, and why am I mentioning it on what is normally a Downtown blog? Because I found this tweet too funny not to share:

Southwest Airlines is having a three day sale on flights from Memphis to Chicago for $45 one way/$95 round trip if traveling between late August and mid-December. There are also discounts on flights to Houston and Tampa. Hmmm maybe I should hop on a plane this fall and go have a meal at Honky Tonk Barbeque and see my former BBQ teammates Chuck and Willie and Imran.

Bosco Hogan, star of The Tudors, The Borgias, and In the Name of the Father, will be at the Brass Door next Tuesday, June 10 from 6 to 8 PM for a special presentation called “Of Ireland Born.” He will read from a sampling of works that helped create The Republic of Ireland including Yeats, Synge, O’ Connor, and O’Casey. There will be live music by Robert Johnson and John Albertson as well.

Just a couple of news items today. The Memphis Business Journal reports that plans for a giant tower at One Beale are back on the table. The plan for the tower called for a 30-story structure with office space, condos, and a hotel. A company in Memphis is in talks to pre-lease the office space, making the building a viable project once again.

My friend Craig David Meek’s book Memphis Barbecue: A Succulent History of Smoke, Sauce & Soul will be released next Tuesday, June 10, and there will be a launch party and signing at the Booksellers at Laurelwood at 6 that day. Downtowners who want to talk with Craig will have their chance on July 10, when he will appear at a signing and BBQ tasting at the Cotton Museum. The Memphis Flyer has more info.
