Rock ‘n Wild Picnic this Saturday

Up early, so let’s bang out a post before work. Yesterday I posted how a friend of mine, who grew up in the South, has never had chicken fried steak, and I posted tips on how to get a good chicken fried steak. I would like to continue the discussion for a moment. In 2000 I was driving back to Memphis from San Diego. I was passing through New Mexico, I believe, when I saw a billboard with the words “CHICKEN FRIED STEAK,” the exit to get to the gas station restaurant that serves it, and a picture of a chicken holding a skillet. You KNOW that’s some damn good chicken fried steak right there.

Chicken fried steak may be the only food on Earth for which billboards can be used to judge quality.

Saturday I ran into my BBQ team head cook Frank at the Memphis Farmers Market. He is the market’s board president, and he asked me to mention once again a fun MFM event that is coming up this Saturday at 5 PM. The Rock ‘n Wild Picnic is a picnic at the market pavilion, and you’re welcome to bring a lawn chair, picnic blanket, or whatever you would like to plop down on. Your $30 ticket gets you pizza by Rock ‘n Dough, wraps by So Fresh, and four drink tickets. You can use these on beer by Rock ‘n Dough or wines by Frederick Wildman and Sons. Additional drink tickets/bottles of wine can be purchased. Live music by The Three Kings. There is a $15 ticket for those under 21 and those who choose not to drink alcohol.

All right, got more news but it’s time to jump in the shower. Probably back either at lunch or after work with another post.

Moody Ques announcements and more

I have a couple of BBQ team announcements. We have decided on an end date for our name our new smoker contest. It will be Friday and we will announce the new name in the days after that. We have an entry that I would say is in the lead so far, but we’re open to more suggestions. You have five days.

Secondly, if you’re on the Moody Ques, save the date: Saturday, August 8. As I’ve said, one of our goals is to have practice cooks/team get-togethers throughout the year, not just in the couple of months preceding BBQ Fest. Our head cook Frank is itching to light up our new smoker (using the BBQ device I’m no longer allowed to mention), which by then will have a name. So, we’re going to get together at Holliday Flowers’ new storage space. I don’t have the exact address but I have been told it’s on Monroe about a block away from the building that used to be Kudzu’s, about a 10 minute walk from the Downtown core. Time to be determined, and I will have more details on this blog in the coming weeks.

(I mentioned the BBQ device I’m no longer allowed to mention  )

Oh, one more thing: August 8 is Brent’s birthday!!! Brent is our booth designer, and his work is absolutely amazing. I remember the first year he worked with us, back on the old Ques Brothers team. The park was at its absolute muddiest. It had rained pretty much the entire week prior and Tom Lee was a swamp. You could barely navigate the sidewalks without slipping and falling. And then you got to our booth, and it was like stepping into a Miami Beach nightclub. It was other-worldly. If you are planning an event – a wedding reception, birthday celebration, corporate event – you need to talk to the folks at Holliday Flowers. They can put together an experience like no other.

By the way… if the August 8 cookout is on Monroe, that puts us in the vicinity of the High Cotton brewery tap room… hmmmmm field trip? Then again, we tend to have such awesome beer at our events that it might not be necessary.

I owe an apology to my Lyft driver Ricky who got me home from South Main last night. It was only my second time using the app and I forgot to tip. He told me he reads my blog, too. I am so sorry, it was not my intention to stiff you.

Historian Jimmy Ogle leads one of his walks across the I-55 bridge this afternoon at 2. Meet at Crump Park, at the Metal Museum Drive exit off I-55. He’ll talk about the river, the barges, the park, the bluffs, the railroads, and the Metal Museum. Free to attend.

A band called Blu Zatcha plays Huey’s tonight at 8:30. Never heard them before, but neat name.

The Memphis Shorts Festival returns to Hard Rock Cafe on Tuesday at 7. Short films in a variety of genres.

So, yesterday I learned that my BBQ team vice-president has never eaten a chicken fried steak in his life. “Look,” I told him. “We’re a bit spoiled because we live Downtown. You could ask Michael Patrick to cook you one as a special order, and I’m sure he would and it would be damn good. But that’s not what you need to do. You need to get in the car and get on I-40. You can go toward Nashville or toward Little Rock. It doesn’t matter. The first billboard you see for a gas station with a restaurant that mentions chicken fried steak, that’s where you want to go. If there’s a choice of brown gravy or white gravy, the white gravy is mandatory. Mashed potatoes as a side is mandatory too.” I recommended green beans as a second side, but Clay said he is more of a purple hull peas kind of guy. I have no issue with that.

Oh another thing – Clay ate biscuits and gravy for the first time in his life yesterday. HE GREW UP IN THE SOUTH. What is wrong with this boy? And he’s on the Moody Ques cook team. That might explain our finish in the shoulder competition this year.

Reminds me – we had a cookout at work the last day we were open before the Fourth, and a co-worker asked me, “Is your team’s goal to eventually open a restaurant, the way the team behind Memphis Barbecue Co. did?”

“Our goal is to finish in the top 90% in the shoulder competition,” I replied. Maybe one of these years it’ll happen.

All right. Time to hit Publish and jump in the shower. D-RANKS with B-RAD at 11. I’ll be there a while, so come on up.

Living on The Edge in this second Friday update

TRAFFIC ALERT: Union between Front and Riverside will be closed between approximately 8 AM and noon tomorrow, Saturday July 18, for the installation of a crane.

Sorry there was no post at the lunchtime hour, but it was for a good reason: I was doing my civic duty and voting in The Memphis Flyer’s Best of Memphis 2015 poll. For Best Blog, there is no dropdown list this year – you fill in the box with the blog’s URL, minus the www. So you would put in paulryburn.com/blog if you wanted to vote for me.

One other thing – if you have a person in mind for Best Bartender or Best Server, but you don’t know their last name, find it out before voting ends August 4. You have to supply their full name, and there is no dropdown list of nominees this year. This puts voters who aren’t on Facebook at a disadvantage – I didn’t know the last name of either my vote for bartender or server before we became Facebook friends.

Lots of news about The Edge district today, the neighborhood east of Fourth that includes Sun Studio, Trolley Stop Market, Evelyn & Olive, Arepas & Salsa, and the former Wonder Bread bakery. The Daily News has an excellent article about potential for growth in The Edge, pointing out that the neighborhood is reaching a tipping point the way South Main did 15 or so years ago.

Trolley Stop Market in The Edge will be closed tomorrow through Wednesday for remodeling and to get their new summer menu together. The market will re-open Thursday, July 23.

I didn’t even know The Edge had a neighborhood association (the fact that they do is a promising sign), but it will meet at the Premiere Palace Ballroom Monday at 6 PM. Darrin Hill who is spearheading and who is the spokesman for the International Rockabilly Festival, to happen on two blocks of Marshall August 15-16, will discuss the festival. Also, Cat Pena will talk about the progress of the Collaboratory public art project.

Next Saturday, July 25, is the 27th annual Blues on the Bluff, a fundraiser for radio station WEVL. It will be on the grounds of the Metal Museum, overlooking the Mississippi, starting at 6 PM. There will be live music by Lightnin’ Malcolm, the Gary Burnside Band, and Elmo and the Shades. Food sales by Central BBQ (profits donated to WEVL), beer for sale (sponsored by Schlafly), wine for sale, event posters for sale. Kids welcome when accompanied by parents. There will be a silent auction as well. Buy advance tickets here.

Through Sunday, you can get free spinach artichoke dip with purchase of any meal at Spaghetti Warehouse. No coupon necessary, just ask your server for the deal.

Pre-sale of tickets for the September 14 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw at FedExForum has begun. Go here and use code MEMPHIS to purchase. You have until 10 tonight to take advantage of the pre-sale.

Friday update: New Redbirds promotions, Farmers Market news, and more

Up early, and there’s enough news to fire off a post before I go to work.

The Redbirds have added two theme nights later this month. Saturday, July 25 (6:05 game time) will be Christmas in July. Fans who purchase a special ticket will receive a commemorative Christmas ornament with the Redbirds’ new logo. Tickets are $19 dugout or $16 field box. Call 901-721-6000 to order this ticket. The team will have special Christmas sweater themed jerseys on that night, and there will be a silent auction to purchase them from the time the gates open through the end of the sixth inning. Auction winners will get to come on to the field to receive their jersey. Proceeds will benefit the Redbirds’ RBI program. Also that evening, you can bring pieces of used baseball equipment to donate to the RBI program. Those who bring equipment will receive a voucher for a ticket to any August-September Sunday-Thursday Redbirds game.

Monday, July 27 (7:05 game time) will be STAR WARS night. Come dressed as your favorite character from the movie series. There will be movie sights and sounds, character appearances, and photo opportunities all through the game. Once again there will be a special $19 dugout or $16 field box ticket you can purchase by calling 901-721-6000. $4 of the price of this special ticket will be donated to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.

HOT! HOT! HOT! is the theme this Saturday at Memphis Farmers Market. It’s hot outside but there’s shade under the pavilion. There will be hot peppers, spicy hot salsas, farm-raised meats you can throw on a hot grill, and hot women in yoga pants walking around shopping. There’s also plenty of things at the market that are cool, including smoothies, juices, and hand-made popsicles. The Master Gardeners will be back 9-noon to answer your questions about keeping your garden healthy in the summer heat. Also from 9-noon there will be a nutrition booth, where people from the Memphis Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will offer help choosing healthy beverages. For the kids, Barefoot Books will be on hand at 10 and 11:30 to read “The Beeman,” a story about bees and honey. Following the reading there will be a singalong and kids can make paper bees to take home. Music by Bruce Barham 8:30-10 and Kim Hummel 11-12:30. The market is at Front and G.E. Patterson Saturdays from 7 AM to 1 PM.

The CA has an excellent Eat the Street article laying out every one of your dining options on Main Street.

The Chisca on Main now has a website. You can view floor plans and amenities in the historic hotel being renovated into apartments.

The Hungry Memphis blog posted a visit to Agave Maria yesterday.

That’s all. Possibly back at lunchtime or after work with a second post.

Thursday update from your bratty Downtown blogger

5th Kind is the featured entertainment at tonight’s Peabody rooftop party. Doors open at 6, $10 cover, ladies free until 7. Your admission includes a Mediterranean buffet (7-8 PM) of chicken and tzatziki sauce. If you’re in VIP there’s a second buffet (7-9:30) of feta pies, flank steak over tabbouleh, and hummus and olives. Guava margaritas will be on special.

Meanwhile, over at Felicia Suzanne’s patio for Thursday night Tacos and Tunes, Deborah Swiney will provide the live music. $2 tacos, $5 margaritas, 7-10 PM.

@CopelandCoach has posted yet another top-drawer job opportunity in Memphis. This one is a Strategic Director position at Youth Villages.

There will be a car show Downtown tomorrow. The 28th annual International Z-Car Convention comes to Beale Street from 7 AM to 4 PM.

There’s a GoFundMe page where you can support the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival. The Labor Day weekend festival on the Main Street Mall is one of the best ways to get acquainted with regional music, art, and cooking. It has become one of my very favorite fall festivals.

Tomorrow is a Ribbon cutting and wine tasting at Quench from 4 to 8. Quench is the new liquor and wine store on Second, owned by the same people who own City Market.

Overheard last night from one of the customers at D-RANKS with B-RAD: “I went to Purple Haze for the first time last night and it was the best pizza I ever had.” Although the late-night spot gets wild on the weekend, it is said to be pretty tame on the weekdays, so keep it in mind for a late-night snack.

Also, last night I heard that someone told B-RAD that I’m such a brat. Here’s what I thought when I heard that:

The NBA will host its first-ever game in Africa at 8 AM August 1 (game on ESPN), a Team Africa (NBA players from Africa or with roots there) vs. Team World (NBA players from other continents) exhibition game. Marc Gasol and Jeff Green from the Grizzlies will be on Team World, as will former Grizzly Pau Gasol. Former Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins will coach Team Africa.

I’m going to lead off at happy hour at Mary’s bar at Blind Bear after work, then will figure the rest of the evening out. Right now it’s time for a scorching hot trip in the car to Horn Lake Kroger. Not looking forward to this.

Memphis Flyer poll voting open + Wednesday news

Voting is open for the Memphis Flyer Best of Memphis 2015 poll. This is the city’s most well-respected Best Of vote, and it goes on now through Tuesday, August 4. You have to fill out at least 50% of the ballot. If this blog has enriched your Memphis experience in some way, keep me in mind for the Best Blog voting…

I see we have more jokes. Yesterday I announced a public contest to name the Moody Ques’ new smoker. Members of Squeal Street BBQ immediately started suggesting names, referencing the difficulty we had getting our old smoker Bevo to hold temp the past two years. Last night they showed up at Blind Bear and had more suggestions. “You could call it the PBR cooker – Pork Be Raw,” they offered. “Or Pork Tartare.” Very funny guys. Hey, I’ve got a suggestion of my own: We could call it the “We’ve Won a Trophy Since 2013, Unlike Some Teams” cooker.

Speaking of BBQ: This Lifehacker graphic shows how to spice up your next BBQ with 9 ways to spice up common ketchup. There’s even a Bloody Mary-flavored ketchup on the list.

Last week I bought a bottle of Crazy Good Chaos Theory ghost pepper sauce, and have been looking for dishes on which to try it. Last night a local chef made a great suggestion: Get the Jager BBQ Bologna sandwich from Blind Bear to go, bring it home and add some sauce. Damn that was delicious! The sauce was also good on the side of pepper jack mac & cheese.

Speaking of the Blind Bear, don’t forget that tonight is another special weekday evening edition of D-RANKS with B-RAD. Brad will be working the closing bar shift from 7 to 3. From what I hear, a lot of his Sunday regulars are going to be coming up, as well as some of the Bear folks from past years. This is probably his last weeknight shift for a long time. There will be trivia with Charles at 8.

E! Online reports about a new feminist newsletter that will teach women how to buy tube tops. I approve.

Today is the second of two days of free yoga classes at Downtown Yoga, in the 500 block of South Main. My friend @CopelandCoach had her first visit to the studio this morning and tweeted a good article on 3 ways yoga can help your career. YOGA!

If you buy 2015-16 Grizzlies season tickets today, you can get a free replica Marc Gasol jersey while supplies last.

Hey, can a few more people post that Pluto “Hey, you dumped me years ago? But now you’re driving by my house real slow?” meme to Facebook and Twitter? The first 180 times I saw it were just not enough.

PBR news: Pabst announced that it is opening a new brewery in Milwaukee.

That’s it for now. Probable plan for tonight is to get to happy hour at the Silly Goose about 5:30, then over to the Bear at 7 for D-RANKS with B-RAD. Second post after work is a possibility.

Rappel off One Commerce Square + more Tuesday news

Here’s a unique opportunity for you: You have the chance to rappel off the One Commerce Square at Main and Monroe on Saturday, August 29. The event is called Over the Edge Memphis and is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. It is open to the first 75 people who do the following: Be at least 14 years old by the day of the event, have a body weight of 300 pounds or less by the event date, and raise a minimum of $1000 by the event date. Participants will get a Special Olympics Over the Edge T-shirt, a goodie bag from Special Olympics partners, and free admission for you and a guest to the Over the Edge reception/party the night before. There will be awards and prizes for top fundraisers.

I see we have jokes: A couple of hours after I posted the contest to name the Moody Ques’ new smoker, I got a text: “On behalf of Squeal Street, we would like to submit the name Igloo for your new cooker name.” Funny. Maybe we should have a contest to name the trophies our team won in 2014 and 2015. That’s not a contest Squeal Street could run, so they would have to sit on the sidelines and drink their pudding shots and watch.

Thanks to those of you who have sent in serious suggestions about a name for the smoker. I have forwarded them on to the cooks.

There’s going to be a press conference outside Sun Studio tomorrow at 10 AM to officially announce the Memphis International Rockabilly Festival, which will happen over two days in The Edge August 15 and 16. The festival will span two city blocks and there will be live music, a hot rod show, and world famous BBQ.

On a related note, my friend Brad Birkedahl whose band plays the Blues City Cafe Band Box several days a week has announced that he will be participating in the rockabilly festival.

There’s a Director of Marketing position open at Memphis in May International Festival.

Name our new smoker and win a BBQ Fest experience with the Moody Ques

2015-06-19 17.56.03

Would you like to experience what it is like to be a member of a BBQ Fest team for a day? Well, now you can. Help the Moody Ques come up with a name for our new smoker, and if you submit the name we select, the experience will be yours.

The smoker we used this year and in the past, Bevo, had trouble holding temperature and we just couldn’t trust Bevo to get our pork shoulder done anymore. So we purchased a new smoker from Tucker Cooker Company, a local business based Downtown at 122 West Carolina. On the 19th we did our first practice cook on the new smoker, feeding the folks at the Memphis Farmers Market Crop Hop 5K after-party. We lit the smoker with the device I am no longer allowed to mention on here, and it had absolutely no problem holding temp. The folks at Tucker build quality products, that’s for sure!

(I mentioned the BBQ device I’m no longer allowed to mention on here  )

So, what exactly do you get if you come up with the name we select for the smoker? You get full access to the Moody Ques booth for one day (Thursday, Friday or Saturday, your choice) as though you were a team member at BBQ Fest 2016. This includes

– A one-day pass to get into Tom Lee Park for free

– Access to the Moody Ques booth. The booth has placed second or higher in Best Booth the past three years. We may not have an entire case full of cooking trophies, but we’re the best damn party in Tom Lee Park!

– Food, beer and liquor (for this reason you must be 21 or up to enter. Winner must bring current ID to get access to the booth)

– 2016 Moody Ques team T-shirt

– Two guest wristbands so you can invite your friends to the booth. NOTE: These guest wristbands give your friends access to the Moody Ques private party, but they still have to pay to get in the park.

THIS IS THE PRIZE PACKAGE ONLY IF A NON-MOODY QUES TEAM MEMBER SUBMITS THE WINNING NAME. If a Moody Ques member submits the winning name, your prize is a pat on the back and a reminder to pay your dues in full. I don’t see any reason why members of other BBQ teams can’t enter if they choose to do so, and have dual membership for a day if they win.

Winning name will be selected by the Moody Ques cook team. They have not given me a time frame before they will pick a name, so I will have to get back to you on that. I am assuming you have until at least the end of this week to come up with something.

Keep in mind that the Moody Ques are not MY team, although I realize it comes off that way on the blog sometimes. I am one of about 40 members who make up the team, and although I have special status as “Mr. Load-in” I am not even one of the board members. So names that are specific to me are probably not going to be winners.

Submit your smoker names to paul@paulryburn.com and I will pass them on to the cooks.

Moody Ques news, a second visit to Oshi Burger and more in this Sunday update

Best Memphis Burger Fest is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. Part of the reason why is that the Saturday, October 3 festival is moving to Tiger Lane. Another part of the reason why is that a veteran cookteam will be competing for the first time ever in this festival:

THE MOODY QUES!!!!!!

I don’t know if we’ve filed the paperwork yet, but the team leaders informed me this weekend that we plan to enter. Of course. as “Mr. Load-in” I plan on being a big part of this. I have experience as a former judge and two years’ participation on another team. I also have influence with Seth and will try to get him to add a Best Microwave Popcorn category so we have a chance at bringing home a trophy.

Speaking of burgers, I returned to Oshi Burger yesterday for visit number two. This time I had the namesake signature Oshi Burger itself.

2015-07-11 17.09.45

You know, I have seen some of the local bloggers judge the burgers at Oshi based on one burger there. I don’t think you can do that. No matter what toppings, the key ingredient in a burger is the meat. If you look at Oshi’s menu, there are many different kinds of meat from which to choose: Wagyu American Kobe beef, Creekstone Farms natural Angus beef, 50/50 ground chuck and bacon, and even turkey and lamb.

That being said, I really liked the signature Oshi burger, the most expensive burger on the menu, probably because it is the one made with the highest-quality meat. It has the Wagyu American Kobe beef, and compared to most other burgers at the restaurant it is relatively simply dressed with a soy glaze, shitake tapenade, Swiss cheese, and Umami mayo. The result is a rich, melt-in-your-mouth taste that is like no other I have ever seen in a burger. No, I take that back. I have seen that once before, the year I judged Burger Fest. It’s like a stick of butter (hi Adrienne) aspired to be a burger when it grew up.

If I were on death row, and had an hour to live and was told my last meal would be a burger, would this be my order? No, I’d probably get the double-double from Dyer’s. However, I don’t think burgers Downtown are an apples-to-apples comparison. I would get this burger again for sure, when in the mood for it.

I added a side:

2015-07-11 17.08.23

Fries topped with bacon, beer cheese, and kim chee. I have said for a long time that kim chee is a topping that needs to show up on more foods. Oshi is rapidly moving up my list of places to visit.

Part of the reason that I was hungry and went to Oshi yesterday was that the tandoori truck was absent from the Memphis Farmers Market for the second week in a row! Come back, you are missed! Also missing was the Crazy Good hot sauce vendor. I wanted to talk to them and tell them how much I have been enjoying their Chaos Theory ghost pepper sauce.

I have confirmed that B-RAD will be working the Wednesday night bartending shift at the Blind Bear this week. B-RAD worked a rare weekday shift last week and drew a big crowd, and since he has some time off from his main job Jeannette is letting him pick up the shift once again. I’ll change up my Wednesday routine this week and do happy hour with Feeny and then D-RANKS with B-RAD at the Bear.

There will be a Basha Shine pop-up shop at Makeda’s Cookies, 488 S. Second, tomorrow beginning at 11 AM. You will be able to shop an exclusive collection of natural bath and body products.

Yesterday I witnessed one of the worst attempts to shotgun a beer that I have ever seen in my life:

2015-07-11 17.45.18

Dude why would you pick a Rolling Rock to shotgun? Then again, I guess you want a beer that has as little flavor as possible.

Right around that time, Jamie told me, “Paul, take a picture of this.” An entire tray of duck farts was at the server station waiting to be delivered.

2015-07-11 22.47.13

My influence on Downtown, summed up in one photo. DUCK FARTS!

Typical Sunday Fun Day in the summer coming up. Brunch with Bloom at Bardog, D-RANKS with B-RAD at Blind Bear, possible trip to my home away from home on the south side although I am undecided about that one because of the heat. PBR and duck fart time!

Fishing royalty in town, free yoga today, and more Saturday news

Congratulations to the Grizzlies on winning the Summer League championship game yesterday! The game was tied at the end of regulation, and no points were scored in the 2-minute overtime. In Summer League rules, there is only one overtime, and if it’s still tied then the game goes to sudden death – next basket wins. Russ Smith scored that basket. The future looks bright for many of the young players on the summer team.

KFC has created Chizza – pizza that has a giant chicken tender for a crust. The pizza is being tested in the Philippines. I’m really not sure if this is a good idea.

Fishing royalty will appear at Bass Pro this morning at 11. Edwin Evers, 9-time Bassmaster Elite Series winner, and 14-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier, and Rick Clunn, 4-time Bassmaster Classic champion, will be at the Pyramid.

There will be a book reading and signing by local author and radio personality Wes Yahola this afternoon at 2 at South Main Book Juggler. Yahola will read from his new book The Artifice Conspiracy.

I bet there are some people who get texts of the following nature on Saturday late afternoons/early evenings: “Hey are you at Max’s Sports Bar?” “You are? Is Paul up there?” I can’t know for sure this is happening, but I wouldn’t be surprised…

Today is free yoga day at Downtown Yoga, the new studio on South Main. Wednesday will be a free day as well.

Want to own some cool baseball treasures? Tonight at AutoZone Park, the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will have a silent auction on the concourse. You can bid on memorabilia autographed by current and former players. First pitch is at 6:05 and Colorado Springs is the opponent. St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fredbird is in town, and there will be fireworks after the game.

For my friend Jordan: How to be a cat (23 images)

Congratulations to Eric on stealing my Bardog mayorship on Swarm. I’m down to just Silly Goose and Blind Bear now. Don’t get too comfortable Eric… with the successor to Panda Time this morning, brunch with Bloom tomorrow, and Melissa Monday after that, I have a good shot at reclaiming my status as mayor.

I probably won’t have the Goose much longer either… I see I have someone gunning for my mayorship there. Good for him, it gives him an excuse to go there. #sillygoosereasons

Time to go work on the Bardog mayorship and make sure my Blind Bear mayorship is well defended. All this mayorship work will make me thirsty, so I might have to partake of a PBR or two. Happy Saturday everyone. It’s gonna be a good one!
