Cooper-Young Beerfest 2012 recap

Yesterday was the third annual Cooper-Young Beerfest, held in a large parking lot at the corner of Walker and Fleece from to 1 to 5. My friend Otto and I took a cab down there. I had a much better cab experience than I did riding to Burger Fest a couple of weeks ago. We found a Yellow Cab in the Peabody lot. The driver, a really nice guy named Phil with white hair and a mustache, told us about their new dispatch system, which uses Samsung Galaxy tablets and is among the first in the country to use that technology. When we got there, he gave us his personal cell number if we needed a ride back Downtown.

C-Y is a regional beerfest, so breweries from surrounding states came to town and set up booths. Some of those breweries don’t sell their products in Memphis yet, so it was a chance to try new things.

This deer invited people to come sample beer from Country Boy Brewing from Lexington, Kentucky. Among their offerings was a habanero beer, the first of those I have ever seen.

The habanero beer was surprisingly good. I thought I’d probably pour it out after one sip, but it was very drinkable. The habanero gives the beer a twang, but it is by no means overpowering. I thought to myself, this would be a good alternative to a Bloody Mary as a wake-up drink on Sunday morning.

Another brewer from Kentucky was Lore Brewing Company, from Danville. The doppelbock was very good. I decided to pass on the “Girls Gone Mild” beer at a whopping 3.65% ABV.

As I was sampling, the fest’s organizers got on the PA for a “Breaking News” announcement. I knew it had to be something pretty special because they have never done that in past years. The announcement was that Yazoo Brewing Company from Nashville, another brewery at the festival, had just won third place at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver for their hefeweizen. Congratulations to Yazoo! Their reps are in Memphis all the time doing beer dinners, tastings, and other events, and they are some of the friendliest beer reps I have ever met. They truly have a passion for great beer and they love to talk to the people who consume their product.

I didn’t eat before I came to the festival, so about 2 I had to take a food break. There were several food options: Sweet Grass Next Door was cooking brats, Stone Soup Cafe had gumbo, and Central BBQ had BBQ sandwiches, nachos, and ribs. I decided on the BBQ sandwich with a side of Central’s homemade chips. Oh my God that sandwich was melt-in-your-mouth, slap-yo-mama, pull-down-a-tube-top good. I have not been to the Downtown location yet, but it’s so nice to know that I can get those yummy sandwiches anytime I want without getting in a car now. The Downtown location is at the corner of St. Martin and Butler.

You learn all kinds of interesting things just walking around the beerfest. For example, I learned that there’s a Piggly Wiggly in Charleston, South Carolina that has more beers on tap – yes, I said ON TAP – than the Flying Saucer has here. You bring in a growler, a 1-gallon container, and they’ll fill it up for you. The supermarket also carries more beers in bottles than the Saucer does here.

The main place to learn about beer, though, is the Beer Revival Tent, the festival’s education tent.

The brewers themselves get in the tent for 10-15 minute presentations. They speak about their beers, the brewing process, and the brewing business, and they take questions from the audience. Some also bring along samples of their very newest beers for the audience to try.

A rep from Vino’s Brewpub in Little Rock was among the presenters. It’s at the corner of 7th and Chester Downtown. Great place. Pizzas and calzones are good too.

At the 2010 beerfest I tried a sample of Goldcrest 51 beer, the beer that was brewed at the Tennessee Brewery for many years. The presenter above had spent years researching the Tennessee Brewery, and among his finds was the complete recipe and brewing process for Goldcrest 51. Vino’s again re-created the beer for the 2012 festival, and once again a book about the Tennessee Brewery was on sale. “Thanks to some contacts I made here today, it’s possible that Goldcrest 51 might – MIGHT – once again be sold commercially,” the presenter said.

Even brewing companies that are not yet open were offering samples and presenting. High Cotton Brewing Company will open in a few months at 598 Monroe, and will be Memphis’ second craft brewery. “It’s insane that Asheville, North Carolina has six or seven times the number of craft breweries that Memphis does,” said the presenter. “Johnson City, a town of 30,000, has two craft breweries. I want you to compete with me. I want you to open your own brewery. It’s not hard. I want to you compete with me for shelf space in the stores. I want you to compete with me for tap handles at the bars. Memphis could easily support a dozen breweries or more. Make it happen!”

INSIDER TIP – High Cotton’s website says that you’ll be invited to a pre-opening party if you’re one of the first 50 to give them your email address.

Two local brewing clubs, the Memphis Brewer’s Association and the Bluff City Brewers, had some delicious offerings at the festival, made by guys and gals who love to homebrew. Want to get in on the fun? Join the Bluff City Brewers at the Botanic Garden Saturday, November 3 from 12:30 to 4:00 for Learn to Homebrew Day.

If this post has got you in the mood to go to a beer festival, there’s another one next week – and if you’re Downtown, you won’t even have to worry about driving. There will be a beer festival on Harbor Town Square next Saturday from 2 to 6, with music by Charvey McLemore from 7 to 9. $33 pre-sale and $38 day of, benefiting the Mid-South Food Bank. Call 901-527-2233 to pre-purchase tickets.

The Cooper-Young Beerfest has achieved such a stellar reputation that they had an extra 200 attendees compared to last year. By 2:00 the fest was a sellout. This did cause a lot of the booths to run out of beer by 4 PM. It’s the first time that has ever happened, and I’m confident the organizers will address it next year. Still well worth the price of admission for all I drank and learned. Otto and I walked out of the gate a little after 4. We called Phil, who picked us up in his Yellow Cab about 10 minutes later. He dropped us off at Max’s Sports Bar, where we continued our beer sampling with an American classic: PBR. I required four pint-sized samples of PBR to fully appreciate all its qualities. After that I walked north to the Flying Saucer and did some research on the ideal number of limes to squeeze in a Dos Equis Lager.

Kudos to the organizers and the brewers. Great event.

Fri update: Memphis Madness, Avett Brothers, The Goonies, powerboat racing on the river, gourds, Grizzlies open practice, tailgating tip

Highs in the mid-80s tomorrow. Why not celebrate the return of warm weather by wearing a tube top?

There is a lot going on Downtown tonight and this weekend. The biggest event is Memphis Madness, the first open practice for the Memphis Tigers men’s and women’s basketball team. Doors open at 5:30, and the program begins at 7. More info here.

Over on Mud Island, the Avett Brothers play at 8:00 tonight. Tickets are $37 plus facility fee.

At the Orpheum, The Goonies is tonight’s film in their Classic Movie Series. Details on the movie here.

This is going to be a busy night Downtown and if you’re coming to Memphis Madness or anything else in the Downtown core, it would probably be wise to leave a little early. Traffic is bound to be heavy.

Tomorrow is the AutoZone Powerboat Racing Championship on the Mississippi River. Tunnel-boat racers in Formula Two and Formula Three divisions will compete for the championship in the finale of the racing season. Tom Lee Park is said to be the best place to view the races.

Theme for the Memphis Farmers Market tomorrow is Good Gourd. You’ll find lots of squashes, pumpkins, and gourds at the market. Collections will be taken for the Mid-South Food Bank. Shufflegrit will play 8-10 AM, Steve Rivers 11-1.

The Grizzlies will have an open practice tomorrow at 1 PM at the FedExForum. Autographs for the first 500 fans. More details here.

Tailgating tip: Open a bottle of beer with a car window.

All right. Time to go drive through Southaven’s worst intersection, Airways and Goodman, although I won’t check in there the way some extremely lame Foursquare users do. God I wish I worked Downtown.

Thur update 2: More Halloween parties, Memphis Habitat/Uptown, Aldo’s/Instagram, vegan cookbook signing

I’ve received word of more Halloween parties. The Blind Bear is going to do their party Friday, October 26. The Silly Goose will have two parties: a costume party on Saturday, October 27 and a Fireball Fear Bash on Wednesday, October 31 with DJ Cody both nights. Paula Raiford said her disco is celebrating Halloween the weekend of the 26th-27th but the main party is the 27th. So here’s the lineup I’ve got so far:

  • Thur 10/25: Kooky Canuck
  • Fri 10/26: Blind Bear
  • Sat 10/27: Silly Goose, Paula & Raiford’s Disco, Flying Saucer
  • Wed 10/31: Silly Goose (Fireball), Bardog Tavern

Also a private party a lot of Downtowners attend, normally the last Saturday of October, has been moved to the first weekend of November. I LOVE the way the schedule is working out this year. In previous years, everyone would try to do their parties the same night (the last Saturday of October) leaving the party-goers divided between a million different options. This year we’ll have ample time to enjoy it all.

I’m still trying to figure out a costume for this year. I particularly enjoy costumes where I can play a character – Saucer Girl, Bruce Pearl, and superhero PBR Man in previous years. If you have any suggestions for me let me know. Yikes, I’m down to 14 days to figure this out.

By the way, I have a couples costume suggestion: Girl in a Tube Top, and Guy Who Likes to Pull Down Tube Tops. That would be a great costume.

In other news: The Daily News reports that Memphis Habitat will focus on Uptown for the next two years. The nonprofit, which helps qualifying families build and own homes for the first time, plans to build 50 houses and rehabilitate 100 properties in the area.

Restaurants: If you want an example of how to promote your business on Instagram, look at what @aldospizzapies is doing. They are hitting it out of the ballpark with their food porn photos.

If you’re coming to the Memphis Farmers Market Saturday, clean out your cabinets first. They will be founding up non-perishable food and unused personal care items to take to the Mid-South Food Bank.

Memphis author Bianca Phillips will sign copies of her vegan cookbook Cookin’ Crunk tomorrow, Friday, October 12, at Whole Foods at 5022 Poplar from 4 to 7 PM. You can purchase a copy of the book there, or bring a previously-purchased copy for Bianca to sign. The market will have samples of tempeh gumbo and vegan pimiento cheese for you to try. Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

Time for beer. Quick mayorship defense at the Saucer then over to the Blind Bear.

Thur update: Downtown Dining Week, Hurt Village @ Hattiloo, big band music, South Main Haunts, trivia news, VP debate bingo

So far, 28 restaurants have committed to Downtown Dining Week. From November 5-11 they will offer meals, many of them three-course meals, for the price of $20.12. For many of the restaurants on the list that’s an incredible value. Menus will be announced Monday. Here is the list of restaurants:

Automatic Slim’s
Bangkok Alley
Bardog Tavern
BB Kings
Bleu
Blind Bear
Bluefin
Brass Door
Capriccio Grill
Chez Philippe
City Market
eighty3
Felicia Suzanne’s
Grawemeyer’s
Itta Bena
Kooky Canuck
LOCAL Gastropub
LUNCHBOXeats
The Majestic Grille
McEwens
Paulette’s
Pearl’s Oyster House
The RendezVous
Rizzo’s
South of Beale
Thai Bistro
Trolley Stop
Tug’s

PRO TIP: If you want to eat at the most popular, upscale restaurants on this list (Felicia’s and Chez Philippe in particular), don’t even wait for the menus to come out. Call the restaurants and make reservations for that week now. This is especially true if you want one of the most popular times to have dinner (6:30-8:30ish).

There’s a play at Hattiloo Theatre right now that I bet would be really interesting. It’s Hurt Village, by Memphis playwright Katori Hall, about life in a housing project. Longtime Memphis residents will remember that Hurt Village was the project at the corner of Auction (now A.W. Willis) and Thomas Downtown. It was razed in the late 1990s as planning for Uptown began.

If you’re into big band music, there’s a 1940s musical revue at the Orpheum today. Shows at 3:00 and 7:30.

The first “South Main Haunts” will happen Friday, October 19. This free self-guided walking tour will feature past Memphis residents telling their story, historians sharing the area’s history, and storytellers telling ghoulish tales. This event will be family-friendly.

Last night, Charles announced that a 6-week trivia league will soon form at the Blind Bear. I believe it will start in 2 weeks, offering a larger grand prize in addition to the weekly prizes of $50, $25, and $10 in Bear Bucks.

In other trivia news, Diamond Dave hosts Rock’n’Roll trivia at the Brass Door tonight at 7:30. There will be $50/$25/$10 prizes there as well, and $3 pints.

Watching the Vice-Presidential debate tonight? Play debate bingo. There’s a link at the bottom left of the card where you can generate a new one, so everyone in the room can have a different card. The president hopes that tonight’s debate will put the brakes on the momentum the GOP has built since last week’s debate. Because, you know, Joe Biden never puts his foot in his mouth or anything. I’m a little worried about this one. Florida, North Carolina, and Colorado have already flipped from blue to red in the polls since last week.

Too much news to fit into a lunch hour post. There will be a second news post after I get home from work. Plans for tonight are undecided, but I’m probably going to remain in the Downtown core, with Blind Bear a likely landing spot.

Wed update: Halloween parties, Rendezvous news, Huey’s/Barely a 4K Beer Run, Arepas & Salsa, Ghost River, poker correction

Bardog Tavern will raffle off this hearse at their Halloween party October 31

I’m starting to get word of Halloween parties that will happen Downtown this year. Kooky Canuck always throws a big spooky bash the Thursday before Halloween with a DJ, costume contest, and drink specials. That will put it on Thursday, October 25 this year.

The Flying Saucer has announced a Halloween party with a dead rock star theme Saturday, October 27. The Saucer’s parties are always good for a couple of reasons: The mystery beer tub, and to see the outfits the girls wear.

Bardog will do its Halloween party the day of, on Wednesday, October 31. They’ll have their costume contest at 10:30, and at 11:59 they’ll announce the Halloween raffle winner. Grand prize is a ’76 Cadillac hearse (see photo).

I’ve also learned that there will be a party on the 31st at the Silly Goose with Fireball in the house. Should be really good and I’ve already requested the morning of November 1 off for recovery time.

Couple of pieces of Rendezvous news today. The BBQ eatery now has valet parking for $7. That’s cheaper than the garage next door, and a more enjoyable experience. Valet stand will be at the corner of Monroe and the Rendezvous’ alley (Maggie H. Isabel Street, between Second and Third).

Also, the Rendezvous has started lunch delivery. Call the restaurant at 523-2746/529-1014 or fax 525-7688 or email MemphisRendezvous@gmail.com. Here’s a pic of their delivery menu.

There’s going to be a Barely a 4K run beginning and ending at Downtown Huey’s on Saturday, November 10. Tickets are $25 and you get a special Yazoo Barely a 4K Beer Run cape in Memphis blue when you run. Check-in at 9 AM, run at 10.

Kerry of the I Love Memphis blog tried Arepas & Salsa, the new Venezuelan restaurant at 662 Madison, this week. I really want to get by there soon and try one of those sandwiches. They look delicious.

The Fuzzy Brew blog reports that local brewer Ghost River will increase its presence at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this year.

CORRECTION: Yesterday I posted that Thursday night poker starts at Cafe Ole this week. Actually, the game will start next Thursday.

Last night I played the Tuesday night poker game at the Blind Bear. I made it to the final table, and by 11:30 there were eight of us left. I was exhausted, ready to go home and get in bed, and didn’t care about the game anymore. “All in. All in. All in. Fold (9-4 offsuit, I’m not crazy). All in. All in.” So, what happened? I won, and I have a shiny new $50 Blind Bear gift card in my wallet today.

I’ll be back at the Bear for trivia tonight at 8. Before that I’ll pre-game at the Saucer.

Tue update: Double J trivia/spaghetti, nacho news, vote for president via glassware, Peabody jobs, Fielder Square for sale, Idaho Spuds samples, Aldo’s Pizza Pies and Central BBQ news, new poker night coming to Cooper-Young

I’m pretty excited as I type today’s post. The “Found Dog” post I did Saturday morning resulted in a 7-year-old terrier being reunited with its owner yesterday. The owner had just moved here 2 weeks ago and the dog probably wasn’t familiar enough with its new surroundings to find its way home. Very happy to have helped.

There’s a new trivia night Downtown beginning tonight. Double J Smokehouse and Saloon will be doing trivia on Tuesdays at 7 PM. That means you have easy access to a trivia night whether you live in South Main (Double J), the core (Flying Saucer, 7:30 and 10), or Uptown/The Pinch (Ferraro’s, 8:00).

The Double J is also doing a $12 special for a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs tonight.

Nacho news: Kevin Cerrito, cohost of MemphiSport Live and host of the Ferraro’s trivia night I just mentioned, tweeted that Neely’s BBQ nachos will no longer be for sale at the FedExForum. Both Memphis-area Neely’s restaurants are currently “closed for renovations,” Kevin reports. He says that a new BBQ vendor will be in place at the FedExForum in time for Grizzlies opening night.

If you’re a customer of the Flying Saucer, you don’t have to wait until November to cast your vote for president.

Buy an Obama or Romney glass to show your support for the candidate of your choice.

Looking for a job in accounting? The Peabody has two positions open in their Accounting department, Accounts Receivable Clerk and Payroll Clerk. View open positions at the Peabody here.

Want to own an apartment complex? Fielder Square is for sale. It is the 5-building complex that runs from Madison to Union just east of AutoZone Park.

An Idaho Spuds food truck will be here this weekend, serving up free samples of Idaho Spuds Naturals. Unfortunately none of the locations are Downtown, but I’ll post the list anyway in case you happen to find yourself near one.

  • October 13: Kroger 540 South Mendenhall, Memphis, Tennessee from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • October 13: Walmart 8445 US HWY 51 North Millington, Tennessee from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • October 13: ‘Park After Dark’ at Shelby Farms, 500 North Pine Lake Drive from 7 p.m. to 9
  • October 14: Walmart 798 West Service Road, West Memphis, Arkansas from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • October 14: SuperLo Foods 945 West Goodman Road, Southaven, Mississippi from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

Maddison serving a Pauly Lager (Pacifico with extra limes) at Pint Nite at Aldo’s Pizza Pies

Aldo’s Pizza Pies tip: Look at the bottom of your receipt. Last night I went over there with my friends Bob and Mike. Mike ordered to-go food, and when he got his receipt he noticed it said, “Bring this in on your next visit for 15% off.” This morning Mike sent me a message saying “That pizza I took home was just about the best veggie-style pizza I ever had.” He got the Button Man pizza.

More Aldo’s news: Starting tomorrow, the pizzeria will have Central BBQ pulled pork atop its Memphis BBQ pizza. Also, they’re giving Maddison several bar shifts a week, so if you can’t make it on Monday for $3 Pint Nite you have other opportunities to see her.

And speaking of Central BBQ: Did you know that military, EMTs, firefighters, police, and teachers eat for half-price every Tuesday? That includes the new Downtown location. I bet there are some very happy firefighters at the South Main station today.

Cooper-Young folks: If you’ve been reading about the poker nights we have at Downtown bars, good news – a poker night will be coming your way soon. Muruako who hosts poker at Silly Goose on Mondays and at Double J on Wednesdays told me that he will be hosting a new Thursday poker night at Cafe Ole starting this week.

Last weekend I made fun of a soccer-mom-in-training’s checkins at Home Depot, Kroger, and Big Lots. She messaged me to say thanks for that. No problem at all!

Plans for tonight: With poker nights Downtown five nights a week, I can pick and choose when I play. Due to Maddison’s bartending shift at Aldo’s I took last night off from the Silly Goose (although I did stop by later for Paul’s Drunkass Food). However, tonight I feel like playing. About an 80% chance I’ll show up at the Blind Bear for Jamie’s Tuesday night game at 8. Before that I’ll pre-game at the Saucer, extending my streak to 104 days there.

Mon update: Canuck Thanksgiving, Yo-Yo Ma, job fair, The Sandlot @ AutoZone Park, Spay & Neuter Services open house and more

At left: Mason jar goblet that my friend Clay bought for me on a recent work trip to South Carolina. I’m going to use it as my mayor goblet at the Blind Bear.

I have more info on the Canadian Thanksgiving celebration happening today at Kooky Canuck. You can get a traditional Thanksgiving meal for $6.99 at lunch or $11.99 at dinner. Looks like Canadians eat the same stuff we do for Thanksgiving: Roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and a roll. They’ll also have 99 cent Labatt Blue all day.

Yo-Yo Ma will perform with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra on October 22 at the Cannon Center. Details here.

Attn job seekers: At least 30 companies will hire at a job fair tomorrow in Raleigh. Lots of big-name companies and some government agencies too.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the movie, AutoZone Park will have a screening of The Sandlot Friday, October 19 at 7 PM. The film’s writer, director, and voice David Mickey Evans will introduce his film and explain where the idea for it came from. He will also host a Sandlot trivia contest with the winner receiving a pair of PF Flyer sneakers. After the film Evans will host an autograph session with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Get tickets at the Memphis Redbirds website. Tickets are $7 or a pack of four for $20. Evans’ presentation will start at 7, movie at 7:30.

Want to learn more about Mid-South Spay & Neuter Services, the charity for Best Memphis Burger Fest? Next Monday, October 15, they will have an open house at 854 Goodman Street from 4:30 to 7 PM (this is by the U of M; not the Goodman Road that runs through Horn Lake and Southaven in Mississippi). You can RSVP at msnsopenhouse.eventbrite.com. You’ll get to learn about the nonprofit’s efforts to reduce pet overpopulation. Refreshments will be served. Free food? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

Another fun Sunday Fun Day yesterday. I started at the Blind Bear, where I watched NFL Redzone, the channel that shows every touchdown from every game. I thought to myself, we need a channel similar to Redzone, but for tube tops rather than touchdowns. After the Bear I went to the Saucer, where Foursquare informed me it was my 102nd consecutive day there. Next up was a stop at Aldo’s Pizza Pies for their Slice of the Day, a particularly good one with mozzarella, proscuitto, arugula, and poblano cream sauce. That was my first time trying the poblano cream and I really, really liked it. After that was the Blind Bear again, where I hung out on the couches with friends (wish I’d known they were there, would’ve got there sooner) and then got a late start at poker, sitting down about 30 minutes after the game started. I came in fourth, but because Jamie is ineligible I won third-place points toward the final table.

Monday is becoming the latest day affected by “too much to do” syndrome. Pint Nite at the Saucer. Also Pint Nite at Aldo’s Pizza Pies, with Maddison behind the bar. Good deals on sausage and cheese plates at the Blind Bear (wine specials too, but I drink PBR there). Poker at the Goose at 8:30. I’ll make it to some but not all of these. Will make a game-time decision tonight when to go where.

Sun update: Door guys, beer news, concert, Butcher Shop and more

So, I’ve been getting feedback from a small but vocal subset of my readers recently. One of the door guys at the Flying Saucer commented, “You mention the Saucer all the time but you never mention us. I understand, the girls in the skirts do and should get the lion’s share of the attention. But can you not give the door guys our 15 minutes of fame?”

So, here you go. This is Graham, who made the request. He does a fine job at the door.

In other Saucer news, one of the managers tells me there’s a rumor that double and triple dry-hopped Stone Ruination IPA may show up soon. I hope that’s true. Ruination is not cheap (last I checked it was $13 for a big bottle) but it’s the best India Pale Ale the Saucer has.

It’s time for another concert in Court Square. 2 Mule Plow will play from 4 to 6 this afternoon. Blankets and coolers are welcome. Pets too if you pick up after them.

I heard from someone who works there that the Butcher Shop on Front Street will close later this month. The owner wants to convert the building to apartments or condos. If you want to have one last meal there, better do it soon.

Congratulations to Michael Bean and Colin of the Blind Bear. Yesterday they entered a Blind Bear team into a chili cook-off benefiting The Exceptional Foundation of West Tennessee. They came in third. Bean hosts poker at the Bear tonight at 6:30.

Nice meeting Rick Trotter, the voice of YOUR. MEMPHIS. GRRRRRRRRRRRIZZLIES!!!!!!!!!!!! last night. I’ve got to to better about getting to games this season. The Grizzlies defeated Real Madrid last night 105-93, with a double-double for Marc Gasol and 18 points by Mike Conley.

Up too late to meet friends for brunch. I’ll probably hit the Blind Bear about noon, then the Saucer later in the day.

Bored with dull suburban life? Come play Downtown

Last night I walked out of the Flying Saucer about midnight. The temperature had dropped from 80 to 46 since I had gone out, and I had only a T-shirt on (at least I had the foresight to wear jeans instead of shorts). Even worse, as I got about a block toward home, at Second and Gayoso, the skies came open. I was caught in torrential rain. I scurried for the cover of Second Street Shopper’s awning. As I stood there, freezing and soaked, I thought to myself, “There are people who spent their Friday nights in cookie-cutter suburbs. I’ll take cold and soaking wet walking home Downtown over that lifestyle any day.” Let’s examine some reasons to come play Downtown.

I’ll start off with 100 of them. The Downtown Memphis Commission published a brochure called 100 Reasons to Celebrate Downtown Memphis. It’s a good starter guide to why the locals like it down here so much.

Another reason to like it down here is how I dealt with the rain. After a few minutes under Shopper’s awning, I darted to Havana Mix’s awning, and then to the next one… which put me at Kooky Canuck. The rain showed no signs of stopping (actually, it would be gone in a few minutes, but I had no way of knowing that). “Might as well go in and have a beer,” I thought. Of course, at Kooky that means a Super Cold 34 ounce beer. “Do you want to look at a menu?” the bartender asked, and I said sure. The Canadian-themed restaurant has added a lot of new items to the menu lately, and last night’s rain refuge was a good excuse to try one of them. This is what I got:

This is the skillet buffalo mac & cheese ($7.99), with chicken added for $3 more. It’s mac & cheese with Kooky’s buffalo wing sauce mixed in. Rather than elbow macaroni, they use shells, which I love, topped with crunchies. The taste was so different and good that I found myself picking around the chicken – it really wasn’t necessary to make this a delicious meal. While not to the point of buying Bianca’s cookbook and converting to a vegan lifestyle, these days I’m more open to the idea that dishes and meals do not have to have meat in them to make them complete.

Speaking of the Canuck, another reason to love living Downtown is what will happen there this Monday, October 8. Those wacky Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving a month early, and Kooky will have a traditional Thanksgiving menu all day. They will also have $3 34 ounce Labatt Blue draft.

Another reason to love Downtown: One of my friends moved into Barboro Flats, the new apartment building on Main in the space that used to be the big gaping hole, yesterday. In her welcome packet were two Bardog Tavern wooden nickels. Each wooden nickel entitles the bearer to a pint of the coldest PBR in town for only 5 cents. That’s a warm welcome indeed!

Bardog, by the way, in order to make their happy hour more female-friendly, is stepping it up with the specials. They’re doing $5 Stoli martinis, all delicious flavors, during happy hour 5-7 Monday-Friday. Bardog has already been voted the best happy hour in Memphis, so whether you’re a martini drinker or not, come see why.

Are you ready for some football? If you are, then there’s a new reason to love Downtown this week. Double J Smokehouse and Saloon has installed NFL Sunday Ticket. Why not get there early tomorrow and watch all the noon games on 36 feet of HDTV? While you’re there you can eat Miss Katee’s chicken and waffles, bacon and sausage, sausage gravy, and eggs however you like them. Come talk football with Jeff!

I was going to do a mini-rant here about a server in the Downtown core’s excessive use of profanity in front of customers, but to keep this post positive I’ll save it for later. Apologies in advance to my readers, though, because I will have to drop a lot of f-bombs in a future post to make a point. Hey, Downtown is great, but I never said it was perfect.

My plans for this morning and afternoon contain plenty of more reasons to love Downtown. At 11 it will be time for my team to lose again (this week to Auburn), so I’m going to head down to Max’s Sports Bar to watch the carnage. Good opportunity to catch up with Max, Renee, Ciara, Jose, Mikey, and whoever else shows up. I’ll have to pay for my own Fireball this week, but hey, you can’t win ’em all. Maybe after the game is over I’ll walk over to Central BBQ and have my first sandwich at the new Downtown location. As I go through my day I’ll pull up Foursquare now and then, and snicker when I see one of my suburban friends check in at Home Depot, Kroger, and Big Lots. Then I’ll walk home, passing places like Silly Goose, Majestic, Blind Bear, and Local on the way. So nice to know I can stop in those venues anytime I want.

48 degrees going to 60. Sounds like a perfect day for the PBR hoodie, shorts and sandals combination. Think I’ll put that on and start my trip south. If I get there before Max’s opens, I can always poke around Memphis Farmers Market for a few minutes. Another glorious Saturday in Downtown Memphis! It’s great to be alive!

Found dog

This isn’t about Downtown, but it’s hard to say no when asked to do this kind of post. Last night on the way home from Live at the Garden, one of my readers found a dog. She’s a female terrier, small to medium sized, blonde with a little black. She was found on Poplar about a block east of East Parkway. She was not wearing tags, but was well behaved and my reader believes she must be someone’s pet. If this is your dog, email me at paul@paulryburn.com and I’ll get you in touch with the person who has her.
