Fri update: Memphis Madness, Avett Brothers, The Goonies, powerboat racing on the river, gourds, Grizzlies open practice, tailgating tip

Highs in the mid-80s tomorrow. Why not celebrate the return of warm weather by wearing a tube top?

There is a lot going on Downtown tonight and this weekend. The biggest event is Memphis Madness, the first open practice for the Memphis Tigers men’s and women’s basketball team. Doors open at 5:30, and the program begins at 7. More info here.

Over on Mud Island, the Avett Brothers play at 8:00 tonight. Tickets are $37 plus facility fee.

At the Orpheum, The Goonies is tonight’s film in their Classic Movie Series. Details on the movie here.

This is going to be a busy night Downtown and if you’re coming to Memphis Madness or anything else in the Downtown core, it would probably be wise to leave a little early. Traffic is bound to be heavy.

Tomorrow is the AutoZone Powerboat Racing Championship on the Mississippi River. Tunnel-boat racers in Formula Two and Formula Three divisions will compete for the championship in the finale of the racing season. Tom Lee Park is said to be the best place to view the races.

Theme for the Memphis Farmers Market tomorrow is Good Gourd. You’ll find lots of squashes, pumpkins, and gourds at the market. Collections will be taken for the Mid-South Food Bank. Shufflegrit will play 8-10 AM, Steve Rivers 11-1.

The Grizzlies will have an open practice tomorrow at 1 PM at the FedExForum. Autographs for the first 500 fans. More details here.

Tailgating tip: Open a bottle of beer with a car window.

All right. Time to go drive through Southaven’s worst intersection, Airways and Goodman, although I won’t check in there the way some extremely lame Foursquare users do. God I wish I worked Downtown.
