Tue update: Say thanks to MPD, SEC composite schedule, next SMA meeting

If you’re Downtown this afternoon and can get away from work for a few minutes, stop by Shelton Clothiers between 1 and 3 PM. They’re having a thank-you event for our Downtown police officers, thanking them for all their hard work. Hot dogs and fixins will be served. Wish I could make it… MPD has really stepped up their efforts lately, and it’s made a huge difference. Thank you officers!

A fellow Hog fan sent me this link, which will be useful to all SEC fans… it’s a composite SEC football schedule. Very useful for planning out your game viewing for the rest of the fall.

Save the date for the next SMA meeting, which will be Tuesday, October 12 at Earnestine & Hazel’s. Featured speaker is yet to be determined, but I wanted to go aheaed and mention it because there will be complimentary Soul Burgers for SMA members! Social at 6, program at 6:30 and as soon as I get details about the speaker I’ll post. Free Soul Burgers? Wonder if the Nuh-Uh Girl will show up.

Time to hit Wal-Mart and shop for props for my Halloween costume… really getting into the idea of being Bruce Pearl for a weekend. I enjoy costumes where I can become the character, and being Pearl gives me license to act like a complete douchebag in public, not to mention hit on 22 year old females.

Trivia tonight at the Saucer, 7 PM.

Having a Halloween event open to the public Downtown? Send me info

Writing about my Halloween costume in my last blog post makes me realize… we’re less than four weeks away! I guess it’s time for me to start compiling a list of who’s having a party when… as for parties Downtown that are open to the public, the only one I’ve heard of that is set in stone is Kooky Canuck which will be Sunday the 31st, the actual day of. That will prompt me to take a half-day off work Monday the 1st so I can stay out late.

Who else is having parties, and what days? Shoot me an e-mail at paul@paulryburn.com and let me know. I’ll start compiling a list and post an update every few days.

If memory serves, the last time we had Halloween on a Sunday was 2004, and it worked out well because the the parties were pretty well balanced between Friday the 29th and Saturday the 30th. Kind of worried that this time around, nearly everyone (except Kooky) will do their party on the 30th, which will scatter people this year the way we were last year when everyone did Saturday the 31st. I’m hoping that one or two places will see Friday the 29th as an opportunity.

It’s not Halloween, but it’s time for me to haunt the Saucer and have some Pint Nite beers. Some $3 Pint Nite beers.

Grizzlies, FedExForum pulling their weight financially

The Greater Memphis Chamber has released results of a study about the Grizzlies and the FedExForum. For years, people have wondered if the Forum is worth what the city paid for it… well, now we have evidence that it is. The study shows that the team and arena bring $223 million a year into the local economy, and that the equivalent of 1,374 full-time jobs exist because the FedExForum is here. Sounds like the $250 million to build the FedExForum was not such a bad investment after all.

The study also indicates that 35-40% of the Forum’s visitors come from outside Shelby County. On average, each of those visitors spends $23.40 in Memphis outside of the FedExForum. $5.3 million in local tax revenue is generated annually by the team, arena, and visitor spending. You can read more details in this CA article.

Glad to see the Grizzlies pulling their weight financially… now they just need to win some games!

Halloween costume difficulties

Having trouble putting together my Halloween costume. I was going to buy an orange blazer and orange tie and be Bruce Pearl. I figured I’d print up some papers reading “NCAA RECRUITING VIOLATION” and maybe carry a mini basketball and act like a douchebag all weekend. But there’s a problem… I can’t find a reasonably priced orange blazer. I’ve found several, but I really can’t see spending more than $100 for something I’ll wear 3 days and then never use again. There’s one on eBay for $19, but it’s Texas orange, not Tennessee orange, and it’s too big for me besides. Anyone have ideas how I can pull this costume off without spending an arm and a leg?

I’d like to propose a new rule…

I’d like to propose a new rule in this great drinking game called life.  I’d like to propose that any time the tiny giraffe appears on TV, it should be a community drink.

If you are not familiar with this tiny giraffe of which I speak, watch the video below.

Win a hearse for Halloween

Just posted to Facebook by Bardog Tavern: “Aldo just bought a sweet 1986 Cadillac Coach funeral hearse that we will be giving away at our Halloween party on Sunday, October 31st at Midnight. You have a chance to win with every purchase… Win either the hearse or $500 in cash… Stop by for a chance to win. It only has 69,450 miles, and THEY’RE SOFT MILES…muahhahahahahahaha. Additional info and photos to come…”

Brisket Egg Rolls @ South of Beale

Yesterday I watched the Alabama vs. “#7 Florida” game at the Saucer, thinking the whole time that Florida was in no way competitive with the #1 team in the country, yet the Razorbacks were the week before.  The Hogs deserve to be back in the top 10, and they should surely be ranked higher than LSU after that debacle they put on vs. Tennessee yesterday.  People were saying that LSU-Tenn was the worst coached game in the history of college football, on both sides.  I can’t disagree.

But, anyway.  The game ended and I was hungry.  Air Traffic Mike was there too, so we decided to walk down to South of Beale and grab a snack.  I had the brisket egg rolls, which were a bargain at $9.  Loaded with beef brisket and plenty of horseradish sauce for dipping.  This may be on their “bites” menu but it would be enough to fill most people up by itself.  If you’re really hungry you could supplement it with another app.

By the way, I checked – the brisket egg rolls will still be on the menu after the new Fall menu rolls out tomorrow, so get down to SOB at your leisure and enjoy.

I haven’t done a “daily update” post in a while, so here ya go… Sunday update

Okay, I haven’t done an “update” post in a few days… don’t want to let it slide until Monday’s lunch break.  Let’s see what we’ve got…

There will be a wine tasting at Texas de Brazil Sunday, October 24 from 6:30 to 9 PM, to benefit the Porter-Leath Cornerstone program.  $35 per person to sample Sebastini wines and complimentary appetizers.  I have a feeling anything TdB puts out as a complimentary appetizer is bound to be yummy.  Space is limited, so if you want to go, RSVP to Teresa at 901-205-1234 or e-mail tdickerson@grizzlies.com.

If you own a scooter, the Memphis Kings scooter club is having a rally here the first week of November, known as Dead Elvis IV.  Several of my friends are actively involved in this and it appears to be a lot of fun.  Events for the weekend include a cookout at Max’s (formerly Calhoun’s), a ride to TJ Mulligan’s for live music, a ride to Sun Studio and the Old Millington Winery, a scooter judging, gymkhana, and an awards ceremony.  If you live in the region and own a scooter, you should consider coming to this.  Should be a fun weekend.  You can RSVP through the link provided.

I’ve received several e-mails asking me if/when Downtown Olympics is happening this year.  There was some initial confusion, but now they have settled on a date, Saturday, October 16.  I’m not involved in this event, so the best way to stay in tune with the latest details is to search for “Downtown Olympics 2010” on Facebook and respond as “I’m attending” or “maybe.”  There’s also contact info for the event organizers on the page, if you want to contact them about entering a team.

The Memphis Business Journal reports that Downtown entrepreneur Carl Winfield is expanding his business.  He’s outgrown the space he’s in, so he’s going to keep his current location as a shoe store, while moving his clothing business to a location two doors down the street.  The new shop should be open by November.  Congratulations to Carl – outgrowing your location is the kind of problem to have.  Check out his store(s) if you haven’t already – really nice shoes, dress shirts, and club shirts, less expensive than what you’d find elsewhere Downtown.

Interesting idea that was mentioned to me this weekend… I ran into a couple of people at the Warehouse party last week who were actively involved in MPACT Memphis the same time I was, approximately 2002-04 or as I call the period, “the Doug Bacon years.”  A comment was made that maybe we should have a reunion for people who were active in the organization during that time… it was a great crew, and we’ve all moved on to other pursuits in life and rarely get to see each other.  Any interest in this?  Let me know – if so maybe we can make it happen.

That’s the news for now… it’s a big Sunday Fun Day.  Two people who have made Downtown a fun place to be this summer, Air Traffic Mike and Christiaan, will be enjoying their last Sunday Fun Day in Memphis for a while.  Time to send them off with a proper farewell.  And by proper farewell, I mean, beer.

Is Downtown safe? My thoughts as of October 2010

As many of you know, in September two attempted rapes happened in parking garages Downtown, both within a block of the University of Memphis law school.  These crimes have received a lot of coverage in the media, leading people to ask, “Is Downtown safe?”  As someone who’s recognized as being a voice of Downtown, and someone who’s down here living it every day, I want to weigh in with my honest opinion.

Before I start, though, a little about me, though, to clear up any misconceptions.  I am not a paid blogger.  I do not receive any money from the city, or any civic organization or business for writing the things I write.  I don’t mean to knock those who do by saying that; I’m just pointing out that no one censors what I say on this blog.  This is my personal blog, and I’m free to write whatever I want about Downtown, positive or negative.

In summer 2006 I did indeed go negative.  It was horrible down here.  Three people I knew were knocked out and robbed in parking garages and alleys.  Aggressive panhandlers – not the homeless, but professional scammers – were earning good incomes hustling and intimidating innocent people on the streets.  A co-worker of mine got followed down an alley by one of the “pros” who proposed they do all sorts of lewd acts.  On the weekends, bands of teenagers roamed the Downtown streets, harassing people, blocking traffic, breaking into cars.  It was out of control and I absolutely blew up about it on this blog.  In 8 1/2 years it’s the one time I considered moving out of Downtown.   Thank goodness I never did.

Since then, many steps have been taken to clean up the area.  The Center City Commission hired a safety coordinator, Larry Bloom, a highly experienced former police officer, to come up with a plan.  I first met Larry three years ago and immediately had hope.   He was a no-nonsense guy with the knowledge to get to the root of the crime issues Downtown.

A year later, the CCC created a Downtown safety patrol – two safety officers who ride around the core during peak hours and respond to complaints of aggressive panhandling, disorderly conduct and the like.  Earlier this year, MPD announced that they were creating a special detail of officers who would patrol Downtown streets – not in cars, as has been done previously, but on foot and bike.  It has made a difference.  A lot of our “regulars” who used to be out here every day intimidating people have not been seen in months, or in some cases even years now – either because they realized it wasn’t being tolerated anymore and gave up, or because they kept getting thrown back in jail every time they got out.

There is also a system of cameras that has been installed Downtown, and more are coming thus year… when it’s all said and done, there will be a network of about 100 cameras tied into the Blue Crush system.  Most of the 2006 trouble spots – alleys, for example – are now covered by these cameras or will be soon.  I can tell you that the one in Court Square has made a tremendous difference.  That park has gone from being a hotbed for the troublemakers to a place where you can enjoy a nice lunch outside.

I personally feel totally safe being out by myself in Downtown Memphis in 2010, be it day or night.  I frequently walk home from the bars, sometimes as far away as from G.E. Patterson, sometimes as late as 3 AM.  In my entire eight and a half years down here, I have never been robbed or assaulted.

That’s not to say a problem doesn’t exist.  Two young women will be haunted for the rest of their lives by what happened.  That’s inexcusable.  I may claim that I feel safe down here, but I haven’t walked in the shoes of a 110-pound woman who is not all that familiar with the area.

Could anything have been done to prevent these attempted rapes?  Well, right after the first article came out about the second one, which happened around 3 AM on a Saturday, I made note of the perpetrator’s name and looked up his criminal record.  He was arrested for robbery in 2007, and was sentenced to six years.  2007 plus 6… are you getting 2010?  I’m not.  If this individual had been made to serve his full sentence, he’d not have been on the streets to panhandle and attempt to rape that woman.  His record revealed a lot of robbery and assault charges going back to the ’80s… I can’t understand why anyone would think he was the type of individual that deserves parole.  I wonder how recently he was paroled.  I’d bet less than a week before the attempted rape occurred.

The garages themselves need to step up security.  Parking garages have, over the years, been seen by the criminals as good places to commit crimes, where nobody is watching and there are lots of hiding spaces.  That said, I think the Metro 67 garage did a fairly good job protecting the young woman who was almost raped there.  There was a security guard on duty at 3 AM, which is not the case for some garages Downtown.  The entire garage was covered by security camera, and when the guard saw what was happening and heard the woman’s screams, he ran to her defense.  I hate to say it, but in a lot of garages Downtown this would have gone farther than “attempted” rape.

Another problem is that the criminals and hustlers have learned what hours the Downtown patrols work, and have changed their schedules accordingly.  Some of our “regulars” who used to be active in the daytime now don’t come out until 10, 11 at night.  Patrol hours need to be varied, so that criminals cannot operate at any hour without fear that an officer is going to roll up on them.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the two women who were assaulted – as I said earlier, there is absolutely no excuse.  However, I want to say that I don’t think Downtown is as unsafe as it’s been made out to be recently in the media – it in fact is much, much safer than it was four years ago.  Had the steps taken 2007-10 not been put in place, I have a feeling we would have heard about many more than two assaults/attempted rapes/robberies in the area of the law school since it opened.

Anyway, that’s my two cents.  Y’all be safe out there, and thanks to the CCC and MPD for all the recent steps they have taken to protect us.

Pics from MIFA’s Feed the Soul fundraiser at The Warehouse

Last night I attended MIFA’s “Feed the Soul” event at The Warehouse.  I must admit, I probably wouldn’t have attended this had the organizer not offered me free tickets… but once I was there, my reaction was, “Why haven’t I been coming to this???”  Best party I have ever been to at the Warehouse, and that’s really saying a lot.  I will never miss it again, and will gladly pay for tickets in the future… also going to light a fire under the rest of the gang to go.  They missed out on an incredible event!

A table holding items to be auctioned off, with posters promoting the great work MIFA does in the background. That's Kris, owner of the Warehouse, in the blue shirt.

The MIFA Store Lounge was one of the best parts of the party. They brought in goods from the MIFA Store on Vance, and people got some incredible bargains. I believe the couch on the left was $50. The coffee table was $40. They had clothing, glassware and much more as well.

At 7:30 the main event took the stage... Raiford! He totally re-created the experience of the club, with fog machine, multiple costume changes, maracas, and Paula, Frances, and Marcus dancing on stage.

This was exactly the kind of fundraiser I enjoy… elegant and quite entertaining, yet not a bit pretentious.  Truly an event where there was something for everyone.  Thanks for a fantastic time and you can count on seeing me next year.
