The Lucky Luciano of Downtown Memphis

In observance of the Prohibition repeal parties last night, I took this Which Mafia boss are you? quiz to find out who I would have been if I were alive in 1933. My worst fear was that I would get Al Capone. Capone is the gangster who people who don’t know anything about gangsters want to emulate. He’s the gangster equivalent of “I feel like fine dining tonight, think I’ll go to Bahama Breeze.” My result:

Which Mob boss are you?I got Charlie “lucky” Luciano – Which Mob boss are you?

You are Luciano, Considered the father of modern organized crime and the mastermind of the massive postwar expansion of the international heroin trade. You sit atop the most powerful crime family in America, which now bore his name and controlled the most lucrative criminal rackets in New York such as gambling, bookmaking, loansharking, and extortion.

Perfectly acceptable. I would have been happy with Frank Costello or Carlo Gambino too. Meyer Lansky as well, although that would have been a bit strange considering I’m not Jewish. If I had got John Gotti as my result I would have thrown my MacBook across the room.

The Heroes of St. Jude are running the marathon (and half marathon and the other associated races) as I type this. I can see South Fourth Street from my window and watched the runners take off. If you have to drive Downtown this morning, allow extra, extra time.

Busy, busy, busy day today. I’ve gone over this several times, but just to recap: After the marathon, the bars will be packed with people watching the SEC championship game (Bama vs. Missouri, 3 PM, CBS). The Downtown holiday parade with grand marshal Tony Allen happens at 4 on Beale Street. At 7 there is a huge Stumbling Santa pub crawl with 1000+ crawlers departing from the Flying Saucer (bring a toy for Porter-Leath). The Memphis Tigers host Bradley at the FedExForum at 8:30.

Know what I realized? Next December, the first Saturday will be the 5th. So add Prohibition Repeal parties to the already-crowded list of things to do that day. Wonder how that will work, having the repeal parties and Stumbling Santa on the same day? Maybe I’ll go as Drunk Santa. Of course, that won’t be much different from my Stumbling Santa costume in past years…

If you’re looking for lesser-known events to attend today, I have a couple of them for you. Charlotte Fine Jewelry at 526 South Main is having a Memphis Type History meet and greet today at noon. You can meet the authors of the book, there will be refreshments, you can view the store’s 2015 jewelry collection, and you can update your wish list to receive a $25 gift card to the store. If you go, why not get to the South Main district a bit early and check out the Memphis Farmers Market Winter Market around the corner on G.E. Patterson (9 AM-1 PM)?

If you want to learn how to become a paranormal investigator, there’s a school for that tonight at 7 at the Woodruff-Fontaine Museum. $40 for the class, and you must be at least 18 to attend.

Hungry Memphis made a visit to Love Pop Soda on South Main yesterday.

Holly paid a visit to eighty3 to try their specialty cocktails based on regional universities. They have a Big Red cocktail for Razorbacks fans. I may have to stop by and try that. Those shrimp beignets she ordered as a snack look yummy too.

The French Fort neighborhood has a video on its home page explaining the redevelopment plan.

Quick Facebook check… ugh Elf on the Shelf is all over my news feed. So glad that thing wasn’t around when I was a kid.

Time to get going… my morning plans have something to do with a dog and a panda. I’ll end the day at the Goose celebrating a friend’s birthday. Many stops in between. Time to get this day rolling.
