Thursday update from your bratty Downtown blogger

5th Kind is the featured entertainment at tonight’s Peabody rooftop party. Doors open at 6, $10 cover, ladies free until 7. Your admission includes a Mediterranean buffet (7-8 PM) of chicken and tzatziki sauce. If you’re in VIP there’s a second buffet (7-9:30) of feta pies, flank steak over tabbouleh, and hummus and olives. Guava margaritas will be on special.

Meanwhile, over at Felicia Suzanne’s patio for Thursday night Tacos and Tunes, Deborah Swiney will provide the live music. $2 tacos, $5 margaritas, 7-10 PM.

@CopelandCoach has posted yet another top-drawer job opportunity in Memphis. This one is a Strategic Director position at Youth Villages.

There will be a car show Downtown tomorrow. The 28th annual International Z-Car Convention comes to Beale Street from 7 AM to 4 PM.

There’s a GoFundMe page where you can support the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival. The Labor Day weekend festival on the Main Street Mall is one of the best ways to get acquainted with regional music, art, and cooking. It has become one of my very favorite fall festivals.

Tomorrow is a Ribbon cutting and wine tasting at Quench from 4 to 8. Quench is the new liquor and wine store on Second, owned by the same people who own City Market.

Overheard last night from one of the customers at D-RANKS with B-RAD: “I went to Purple Haze for the first time last night and it was the best pizza I ever had.” Although the late-night spot gets wild on the weekend, it is said to be pretty tame on the weekdays, so keep it in mind for a late-night snack.

Also, last night I heard that someone told B-RAD that I’m such a brat. Here’s what I thought when I heard that:

The NBA will host its first-ever game in Africa at 8 AM August 1 (game on ESPN), a Team Africa (NBA players from Africa or with roots there) vs. Team World (NBA players from other continents) exhibition game. Marc Gasol and Jeff Green from the Grizzlies will be on Team World, as will former Grizzly Pau Gasol. Former Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins will coach Team Africa.

I’m going to lead off at happy hour at Mary’s bar at Blind Bear after work, then will figure the rest of the evening out. Right now it’s time for a scorching hot trip in the car to Horn Lake Kroger. Not looking forward to this.
