Friday update: New Redbirds promotions, Farmers Market news, and more

Up early, and there’s enough news to fire off a post before I go to work.

The Redbirds have added two theme nights later this month. Saturday, July 25 (6:05 game time) will be Christmas in July. Fans who purchase a special ticket will receive a commemorative Christmas ornament with the Redbirds’ new logo. Tickets are $19 dugout or $16 field box. Call 901-721-6000 to order this ticket. The team will have special Christmas sweater themed jerseys on that night, and there will be a silent auction to purchase them from the time the gates open through the end of the sixth inning. Auction winners will get to come on to the field to receive their jersey. Proceeds will benefit the Redbirds’ RBI program. Also that evening, you can bring pieces of used baseball equipment to donate to the RBI program. Those who bring equipment will receive a voucher for a ticket to any August-September Sunday-Thursday Redbirds game.

Monday, July 27 (7:05 game time) will be STAR WARS night. Come dressed as your favorite character from the movie series. There will be movie sights and sounds, character appearances, and photo opportunities all through the game. Once again there will be a special $19 dugout or $16 field box ticket you can purchase by calling 901-721-6000. $4 of the price of this special ticket will be donated to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.

HOT! HOT! HOT! is the theme this Saturday at Memphis Farmers Market. It’s hot outside but there’s shade under the pavilion. There will be hot peppers, spicy hot salsas, farm-raised meats you can throw on a hot grill, and hot women in yoga pants walking around shopping. There’s also plenty of things at the market that are cool, including smoothies, juices, and hand-made popsicles. The Master Gardeners will be back 9-noon to answer your questions about keeping your garden healthy in the summer heat. Also from 9-noon there will be a nutrition booth, where people from the Memphis Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will offer help choosing healthy beverages. For the kids, Barefoot Books will be on hand at 10 and 11:30 to read “The Beeman,” a story about bees and honey. Following the reading there will be a singalong and kids can make paper bees to take home. Music by Bruce Barham 8:30-10 and Kim Hummel 11-12:30. The market is at Front and G.E. Patterson Saturdays from 7 AM to 1 PM.

The CA has an excellent Eat the Street article laying out every one of your dining options on Main Street.

The Chisca on Main now has a website. You can view floor plans and amenities in the historic hotel being renovated into apartments.

The Hungry Memphis blog posted a visit to Agave Maria yesterday.

That’s all. Possibly back at lunchtime or after work with a second post.
