Friday update

The ‘birds are back in town again! Memphis kicks off an 8-game homestand tonight with a 7:05 PM game against the Tacoma Rainiers at AutoZone Park. Come early (gates open at 6) for a couple of different reasons. First of all, there will be a block party with live music prior to the game. If you’re a fan of St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, you will especially want to get there early. First 2000 fans in the gate get a special Yadi-AIR freshener. Be sure to use promo code “NCRM” when buying tickets, so that $4 of your ticket price will be donated to the National Civil Rights Museum.

Want a great job Downtown? LEO Events is seeking a Meeting and Events Coordinator. The company helps put together events worldwide, and their office is at 265 S. Front. I know some of the people there (including one of the co-founders) and this is an excellent place to work.

Tonight is the first pop-up beer garden for Fourth Bluff Fridays from 4:30 to 8:00 with the Mighty Souls Blues Band playing.

Don’t forget that there is a community fundraiser with beers from all the Memphis craft breweries plus some other sources tomorrow night, Saturday, August 13, from 7-10 at the High Cotton taproom, 598 Monroe. It’s to raise money for medical bills for two men who were shot in The Pinch shortly before Officer Verdell Smith was killed by the same assailant in a vehicular homicide on Beale Street. In addition to all the beer, there will be live music by Sarah Simmons. The HiQ BBQ, Memphis Mojo Cafe, and Hot Mess Burritos food trucks will be parked outside.

Dammit… I would like to go to this, not only to support the two victims, but because it’s very cool to see all the breweries working together, and to be able to sample their product in a more intimate environment than a beer festival. However, I have to adult tomorrow night. My BBQ/burger team is having a tasting and as Director of Public Relations, I have to be there to get pictures as well as any news tidbits that need to be shared with the team.

(Okay, let’s be honest… I doubt I will do a whole lot of adulting tomorrow night… )

The FAA is seeking applicants for Air Traffic Controller positions through August 15. You have to have a certain type of personality for this job (particularly, you need to handle stress well) but once you pay your dues, this is a career that leads to high pay. I have several friends who are ATCs and retired ATCs and they seem to love their jobs.

Brad Birkedahl plays the Hard Rock tonight in celebration of Elvis Week. Two shows beginning at 7 PM. I have known Brad for over a dozen years and his music is on point. Elvis fans will enjoy hearing Brad.

Comma, Comma, Comma, Comma, Comma Comedians… they come and go… they come and go. Next Thursday, August 18, they will be coming… to the Memphis Made taproom for Draughts & Laughs IV. $2 admission, show time at 7:30.

Start Co. is hosting an adult field day called Summer Never Stops at Loflin Yard on Wednesday, August 17. All your favorite games will be there, including bocce, cornhole, and life size beer pong. There will be a 60-second pitch competition about any topic you want, an Instagram competition, and a scavenger hunt. It’s a night of adult fun with great food, beer, and music.

While I was at the Silly Goose last night, they changed the hours on their door. They’re now 11 AM-3 AM Monday-Friday and 10 AM-3 AM Saturday-Sunday. In case anyone is wondering, no I will not be taking advantage of the 10 AM weekend opening time. 10 is Farmers Market time for me on Saturday, and I just can’t be out that early on Sunday.

Bluff City Bark reports that Memphis Veterinary Services has a lab/pharmacy tech position open.

Motel Mirrors perform tomorrow, Saturday, August 13, at the Coach House at Loflin Yard. If you can’t get enough live music there, there will be more nearby, as Justin Moore will be on stage at The Dirty Crow Inn 9-12 tomorrow.

Sad to hear that the Queen of Beale Street Ruby Wilson is in the hospital in serious condition. She had a stroke in 2009 but recovered.

That’s all for this post… happy hour plans TBD, as Friday is my “wild card” day.
