Thursday update

Usually this is the time in the week when I have Farmers Market news, but they haven’t sent out the email yet. Because it was a holiday weekend maybe? Oh well, here’s what I do have.

A big event in Downtown Memphis history happened 100 years ago this week. Clarence Saunders disrupted the market opened the first Piggly Wiggly at 79 Jefferson. Rather than the previous system where clerks had taken a customer’s order and gathered up the groceries, Piggly Wiggly was entirely self-service. It offered national brands, consistent quality, and consistent and clearly-marked pricing.

The Ol’ Man Moonshine Ball, a celebration of everything that makes Memphis unique, happens Friday, September 16 at the Gibson Guitar Factory. Event founder Pat Kerr Tigrett talks about the ball in this WREG interview.

Memphis Made Brewing Co. is making its first foray into the world of canning beer this month. Read all about the canning and the festivals and taproom events they have planned for the month in this Memphis Made blog post.

The section of the Downtown riverfront known as The Fourth Bluff is getting a big grant to help boost its development. Here is more information about this grant and the thought process behind it. Follow @FourthBluff on Twitter for updates.

The MBJ has a photo slideshow of the progress that has been made on the future Ghost River taproom. The taproom is set to open next month.

Job news: The airport is hiring a service technician. Also a logistics firm is looking to hire up to 2000 seasonal Memphis workers and will hold a job fair September 17.

Many regulars at the Silly Goose were excited this week to learn that the big pretzels have returned to the menu.

Life is Good has changed their hours. They are now open Sunday-Thursday 10-7 and Friday-Saturday 10-9.

From Bleacher Report: A look at the life of a college football cupcake. Schools like Appalachian State, Youngstown State or Wofford get paid handsomely to take a loss to the big guys – except occasionally they don’t take that loss (or they almost don’t take it) and expose overrated teams.

High Ground News has a good piece on former president Jimmy Carter’s recent build for Habitat for Humanity and what it means for the future of the Uptown neighborhood.

That’ll do it for now. Having a fun day at work. Will be out at happy hour at Silly Goose this evening.
