Update on the Peabody Place public promenade and more Thursday news

The pedestrian promenade on Peabody Place is days away from completion. Peabody Place between Main and Second has been re-striped. On the north side of the street is the future pedestrian promenade, then bike lanes, one lane each way for vehicle traffic, and metered parking on the south side of the street. Bikers are protected by collisions with cars by a row of planters. People on the promenade are protected from cars by two rows of planters.

Furthermore, the Silly Goose has signed on as a corporate sponsor of the project, and will be able to serve people sitting on the promenade in the area enclosed by the planters. (The photos above were taken from the Silly Goose patio). Daniel, owner of the Goose, commented that he would like to have cornhole out there too.

I’ve seen a mixed bag of comments about the project on Facebook, but I’ll put my two cents in: I love it. If I were visiting Memphis from out of town, this kind of thing would make me want to move here. It encourages interaction with others, and shows that Memphis is a city capable of thinking outside the box. If I were a bike rider, I would appreciate the city giving me my own lane protected from cars by the planters.

Let’s address a few criticisms I have seen:

“But Paul, you’re a liberal who will get behind any bike/pedestrian project that makes it harder for people to drive their cars.” No. Not true. Remember when they reduced Riverside to two lanes a couple of years ago, giving the other two lanes to bikes and pedestrians? I thought that was a horrendously stupid idea, and spoke against it multiple times here. This project on Peabody Place makes sense. Peabody Place was never a major thoroughfare, a connector between two interstate highways.

“It will slow traffic on Peabody Place.” Peabody Place was one lane each direction before the change. It still is. The turning lane has been eliminated, and it’s true that could slow traffic as people turn left into the garage on the northwest corner of Second and Peabody, so to some extent this is a valid concern. Those who planned the project need to monitor traffic flow. People need to be educated to use Beale and MLK as alternates if they don’t plan on parking in the Peabody Place garages.

“Memphis drivers are idiots. They will never understand what to do on the street. They’ll crash into the pedestrians on the promenade.” The promenade will be protected by two lanes of planters. Again, though, the planners of the project need to monitor driver behavior, and if it becomes clear that many drivers do not understand the street, make adjustments. I know for a fact that MPD already pays close attention for people driving drunk on that particular street. As for the statement that Memphis drivers are idiots, no argument there. I hope there’s a budget for planter repair in this project.

“It takes away parking spaces.” True, on the north side of the street by the Silly Goose, it does. However, there is a 5-story garage next door. Oftentimes the spaces by the Goose were used by service industry people wanting to avoid paying for parking while they worked. But with metered hours expanded to 8 AM-10 PM Monday-Saturday, they wouldn’t have avoided paying anyway.

Overall I think there is a net positive gain for the city in this project. I encourage my readers to give it a chance. And now, let’s get on to the news…

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a tropical storm named Cindy (now downgraded to a tropical depression) that has us dead in its sights. Rain tonight and they’re expecting 2 to 4 inches by around noon tomorrow. Plan your morning drive carefully and allow extra time. Remember there are spots on the interstate where water pools.

Reacting to federal cuts to Meals on Wheels, a generous MIFA donor has offered to match, 2 for 1, any donation made through June 30, up to a total of $10,000. Triple the bang for your buck represents a tremendous opportunity to help a senior suffering from isolation and food insecurity. For example, your donation of $76 would become $228 with the match, providing more than a month of meals for someone in need. Make your donation here.

Makeda’s Cookies on South Second has added milkshakes for the summer.

Verge Memphis, a documentary made in Memphis, will be shown at Clayborn Temple tonight as part of its 15 Film Series. Tonight’s film looks at the journey of seven indie Memphis artists against the backdrop of the city of rock and soul. It kicks off at 6 PM with a block party. Every film in this series is free to the public and includes discussion by an expert curator.

1960 movie Psycho plays on the big screen at the Orpheum tonight. Doors open at 6, movie at 7.

If you have an Amazon account but haven’t used it in a while, may want to log in and check it. You may have credits from a class-action lawsuit, credits that expire Saturday.

Jamie Wyatt plays the Blind Bear Saturday 7 to 10. That is an unusual slot for them to book live music (it usually starts at 10) so I suspect this is a special performance in some way. When I see Jeannette tonight I will see if she has more details.

Tonight is NBA Draft Day. It kicks off on ESPN at 6. The Grizzlies don’t have a pick in this year’s draft due to previous trades. It’ll still be interesting to see where the top names in this year’s draft end up, and if Lavar Ball does anything outrageous when his son Lonzo gets drafted.

That’s it for now. Keep reading if you haven’t seen the news update I did this morning.

Thur update #1

Caller ID spoofing is being widely used by scammers this year. Let’s say my phone number is 901-685-2446. I might get calls from 901-685-4462, or 901-685-1445, or 901-685-2876 – numbers which look enough like mine that I might be tricked into assuming it’s a local call. I’ve also had my own number spoofed as calling me. Andy Wise from WMC-TV 5 reports that a new law is in place allowing for a fine of up to $10,000 per spoofed call placed.

Wise also confirmed that the strategy I use to fight these calls is the best one: Just don’t answer. If the number is not in my contacts, I let it go to voice mail. If the person on the other end has a legit reason to contact me, they will tell me why on voice mail and I can call them back. The problem with answering is, it tells the person on the other end that this is a working phone number that gets answered. Your number will then be put on a marketing list sold to other scammers, and then number of calls you get will increase.

Belle Bistro is adding a charcuterie bar to the restaurant. The owner noted that many restaurants down here have a charcuterie appetizer or dinner plate, but no one has grabbed on to the charcuterie bar concept here in Memphis yet.

The Flying Saucer has an event coming up that is only for members of its UFO Club: Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Pairings, four pours of Sierra Nevada collaborations, each paired with a small plate of California favorites prepared by the Saucer’s Chef Louis. It happens Thursday, June 29 at 8 PM. Cost is $25, and again, you must be a UFO Club member to reserve your place for this event. Not a UFO Club member but want to become one? Ask your server or bartender how you can make that happen.

The South Main Association has promised that this month’s South Main Trolley Night, to happen Friday, June 30 from 6 to 9 PM, will take things to a whole new level. The Second Line Jazz Band will lead a Second Line Parade from LYFE Kitchen down Main to Webster Ave. at 6:30, and the GrizzLine drummers will march at 7:00. Special surprises are promised throughout the evening. For those not familiar, the shops and galleries of South Main stay open late the last Friday of each month so people can shop and mingle. Many offer appetizers, booze, and/or discounts.

Also stepping it up is AutoZone Park, promising the largest fireworks display in park history following the 6:35 PM game on Monday, January 3. There will be a special ticket ($20 field box, $23 dugout) that includes an all-American buffet of burgers, dogs, sides, and drinks. The buffet will run from 5:00 to 7:30. Prior to the game, there will be a party on the plaza with live music by the Memphis Yahoos and $2 select draft beers.

The VW Microbus is coming back. The new Bus, however, will be an electric vehicle.

This Bloomberg article is the best I’ve seen yet explaining President Trump’s ties to two names you will hear a lot in the months to come – The Bayrock Group and Felix Sater.

I titled this post “Thursday update #1” because I already know there will be a second post at lunchtime. Check back, because I will have an update at the pedestrian promenade soon to open on Peabody Place, plus at least a couple of other news items.

Wednesday update

It’s Drink a Beer, Save a River night at the Ghost River taproom tonight from 5-8 PM. One dollar from every Ghost River pint sold will be given to the Wolf River Conservancy. Yippie Trippie & the PorkStars food truck will be on site, and they will have their weekly Geeks Who Think trivia starting at 7.

Wiseacre Brewing Co. will be hosting movie night next Tuesday, June 27 from 7 to 9 PM, with classic paranormal blockbuster Ghostbusters on the big screen. Lady Bugg Bakery will provide snacks, Stay Puft Marshmallow Men. I imagine you will probably be able to find some beer there too.

Next Thursday evening, June 29, comedy night returns to the Memphis Made taproom. Twelve Memphis comedians will showcase their best material in 5-minute sessions apiece. The show will be free to attend, with doors opening at 8 and the comedy starting at 8:30.

Job news: The Greater Memphis Chamber is hiring an export program manager.

Also, the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) is hiring a Communications & Program Manager and a Landscape Manager.

If you take ride-sharing services around town, you might want to note that Uber is making a change and introducing tipping.

High Ground News has a good article on turning alleys into destinations in the Downtown core, The Edge, and Crosstown.

I had a great time listening to South Side Supper Club last night at Belle Tavern. They have built up a good sized crowd when they play the first and third Tuesdays of the month. I had the pleasure of running into one of my former students who I taught Concepts of Numbers at the University of Memphis years ago. “I read your blog and we’re friends on Facebook,” she told me. Then she asked, “Where’s your troll?”

Anyway, I just want to say this – if any of my other former students have sent me a friend request on Facebook and I haven’t accepted, send me a message on there and tell me you’re a former student. I hesitate to accept requests from people with whom I have 0 or 1 friend in common because there are so many Facebook scams. Let me know that, hey, I actually do know you, and I’ll be happy to add you.

That’s it for now… I’ll be out at Silly Goose happy hour after work, back tomorrow.

Tuesday update: Beer dinner, urban camping, new breakfast spot, and more

On Saturday, July 1 from 6 to 9 PM, the Downtown Aldo’s Pizza Pies location will have a beer dinner featuring the beers of Wiseacre Brewing Co. It will be a four-course menu featuring Aldo’s pies, made-from-scratch pasta, and desserts, expertly paired with beers from Wiseacre.

Two reasons to check out this article by Jennifer Biggs on the Commercial Appeal website: 1) Chris Ferri, manager of Belle Tavern, is featured in a video mixing a three-whiskey Old Fashioned; 2) McEwen’s shares their recipe for roasted potato salad.

The Memphis Flyer has more info about that urban camping AirBNB on Carolina Avenue that I blogged about last month. Tourists I met at the Blind Bear who were staying at the campground told me they loved it.

The Wiz, a G-rated film loosely based on The Wizard of Oz, will be shown on the big screen tonight at Beale Street Landing. Free, all ages are invited, 8:30 showtime.

The Church Health Center is offering its mental health first aid training once again. You are more likely to encounter someone having an emotional or mental crisis than you are to encounter someone having a heart attack. On Thursday, August 17 from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Church Health office at Crosstown Concourse, you will learn 5 steps to offer initial help to someone having a mental crisis. You will also be given resources to connect them with professional, peer, social or self-help care. The class is free but donations to the Church Health Center are appreciated. August 9 is the deadline to register.

The Foo Fighters are coming to FedExForum Tuesday, October 24 as part of their “Concrete and Gold” tour.

Bardog Tavern is looking to hire a delivery driver who can get food to Downtown businesses and residents in a timely manner. You must have your own reliable transportation, up-to-date insurance, and experience in the restaurant industry is preferred. The hours are very flexible, with 4-6 hour days, and there may be the opportunity to advance in the company. They’re looking for someone who has a mix of days, nights, and weekends available. Apply in person at 73 Monroe.

Sunrise Memphis, a new breakfast joint in The Edge at 670 Jefferson, is nearly complete. It is being opened by the owners of Central BBQ and Sweet Grass. The MBJ has a photo gallery. They are looking at Big Bad Breakfast in Oxford for inspiration. The restaurant will also be open for lunch and will have a coffee bar.

Progress on Peabody Place:

That’s it for now. Going to stop by Belle Tavern this evening to hear my friends South Side Supper Club. Back tomorrow.

June 19 update

Kind of a depressing Monday… today would have been my mom’s birthday. Forgive me if this post is not one of my best.

Jennifer Biggs of the CA is writing a new column called First Bites. Not a review, this column will take a look at new restaurants shortly after they open, to give readers an idea of what to expect. Covered today is The Front Porch, the Beale Street Landing restaurant opened by the Majestic Grille owners Patrick and Deni Reilly.

Wahlburgers will be opening this fall at 349 Beale. The burger chain is the brainchild of chef Paul Wahlberg and his celebrity brothers Donnie and Marky Mark. It will be opening in the location that was previously intended to be a Sweetie Pie’s.

A man was attacked, stabbed with a vaporizer at Purple Haze Saturday night. I used to go there to hang out late-night with my service industry friends, but haven’t in a couple of years. I so miss having the Black Diamond as a late-night option.

Downtown Yoga has announced a workshop on back bends and heart openers for Saturday, July 22 from 2 to 4 PM.

Former Memphis Tiger DeAngelo Williams, having spent 11 seasons in the NFL, is trying a new career. On Saturday, June 15, he will wrestle in a tag team match on the Slammiversary pay-per-view for Impact Wrestling (formerly TNA Wrestling).

This article about Trump scrubbing his daughter Ivanka’s name from various shell companies is interesting, but not because of what it says about Ivanka. Scroll down to the last paragraph. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is said to be caught up in the Trump-Russia investigation, and he’s starting to realize his best chance to avoid jail time is to rat on his Senate counterpart Mitch McConnell and not further impede the ongoing investigation in any way.

That’s it for now… I’ll probably do Melissa Monday happy hour at Bardog after work. Back tomorrow.

Sunday update: Dinner on the farm, vegetarian plate at Rizzo’s and more

You may have seen flowers and produce from Whitton Farms of Tyronza, Arkansas at the Memphis Farmers Market or at Trolley Stop Market… but I bet very few of you have had the actual farm experience for yourself. Well, here’s your chance! On Sunday, June 25 from 3 to 6 PM, the farm will host a Celebration of Flowers dinner. Early summer is when the farm is really in full swing, and they want to share it with you. They will roast a whole hog from King’s Farm and chickens from Powahatan Farms. and of course there will be veggies from Whitton Farms itself. You can build your own tacos and sliders, and there will be casseroles, sides, and desserts. For entertainment there will be farm tours, hayrides, water slides, bouncy house, live music, arts and crafts, home brew demo, a floral demo, and dancing. Kids are $50 for adults, $15 for kids 11 and under. Parents: If your kids have lived in the city their entire lives, this would be an excellent way to show them what life on a farm is like.

Yesterday I had to go to South Main to run an errand for a friend, and the clock ticked past the 5:00 hour. “Rizzo’s is open!” I thought. “And it hasn’t had time to get crowded yet!” I paid my tab and hurried up Main Street.

Over the years, I’ve always advised vegetarians to eat dinner at Rizzo’s. Chef Michael Patrick has a vegetarian entree each day. It’s not just a salad, or a dish that normally comes with meat, with the meat taken off. He does something inventive and creative every time. So, just this once, I decided to try it. Now, I did cheat and order a bowl of bacon cheeseburger soup first. It’s not really cheating if you yourself are not a vegetarian, though! After I devoured the soup, out came the vegetarian special of the day.

The mini-pecan tarts on the right are what made this dish for me. It was very good. Am I going to choose the vegetarian plate over the chorizo meatloaf or the seafood pasta or the herb encrusted rack of lamb next time I go in? Absolutely not – but it’s because I eat meat, not because the veggie dish of the day isn’t good. My dinner order last night verified that I am not wrong when I recommend the place to vegetarians. My compliments, Chef! Fabulous combination of veggies and sauces and tarts.

On the way down to Max’s and Rizzo’s I stopped to see my friend Michele at Cafe Pontotoc. Something I didn’t know: You can get growler fills there for $9. They have a nice selection of drafts from local and regional breweries, as well as the Cadillac of beers, PBR.

The Redbirds are away from their home base right now, but I have a date for you to put on the calendar: Thursday, June 29. All-You-Can-Eat Thursday will be back that night, and they will have breakfast for dinner. Your specialty ticket gets you a seat for the game, one Coca-Cola product or bottled water, and all-you-can-eat scrambled eggs, waffles (with strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream, and maple syrup), sausage, bacon, potatoes, cheddar grits, and fruit salad. Buy your ticket here.

Already have a ticket to the game? Upgrade to the buffet with a $10 wristband purchase.

Here are nine Russian words you need to know to understand the Trump-Russia investigation. These will help you understand how Putin stays in power, how concepts relatively new to the U.S. are accepted facts in Russia.

Time for D-RANKS with B-RAD at Sunday brunch at the Blind Bear. I was just there at 3 AM, and it will feel like I never left. Had to write this post though. Back tomorrow with more news.

Hey, Mr. Tangerine Man, tell a lie for me: Saturday update

Doesn’t apply to post titles.

Just got back from my Saturday morning caffeine run to City Market. On the way back, I saw a new business doing good things for Memphis and I thought I’d give them a shout-out. Give Good empowers the life of young adults on the autism spectrum. It offers them a place to work, and a place and purpose within our community. You can buy Give Good toffee at locations around town or in their online store.

The 36th annual Outdoors Inc. Canoe and Kayak Race kicks off this morning at 10 AM this morning. Racers will start at the mouth of the Wolf River, taking them out into the Mississippi River. They will go under the I-40 bridge, come back around the foot of Mud Island, and finish in the Memphis Harbor. Wind, strong currents, and eddies are challenges with which the racers must contend.

Loveland Duren will provide live music at the Ghost River taproom tonight from 6 to 8, and the Sushicide Squad food truck will be parked outside. For my readers out in the U of M area, there will be a Ghost River tap takeover today from noon to 3 at Buster’s. You might get some free swag.

MATA will begin testing trolleys soon. No passengers will be allowed, only bags of sand to simulate passenger weight. If they pass the tests, passenger trolleys will start being phased back in by the end of the year.

WWE Monday Night Raw returns to FedExForum on August 28 and tickets go on sale this coming Friday at 10 AM. That will be the second Raw after SummerSlam.

Okay, if you don’t want to read about politics, you can exit this post now without missing any Downtown news. However, if you didn’t read about everything that happened in the White House yesterday, you might want to keep reading.

EDVA = Eastern District of Virginia. In subsequent tweets, Claude said that Bannon physically confined two White House staffers, blocking the exits. So he obstructs exits as well as justice. More on that…

In other news, the House committee investigating the Trump-Russian connection has said it wants to talk to Brad Parscale, who was digital director of the Trump campaign. Here’s a chart showing the connections between Trump, Parscale, and others involved.

Trump’s longtime lawyer Michael Cohen has hired a lawyer of his own in the Russia probe. When lawyers start hiring lawyers, that’s a sign that things are getting ugly.

Vice President Mike Pence has lawyered up too. Pence’s lawyer has experience with government investigations. He served on the staff of a Republican Congressman during Watergate, and he served as counsel to a senator investigating Iran-Contra. He also represented Sepp Blatter, corrupt former president of soccer’s governing body.

The investigation is gathering momentum so fast that I kinda just want to stay home and reload Twitter every few minutes to make sure I don’t miss anything. However, there is no PBR here at home, so out I go. I’ve been asked to pay a visit to Max’s Sports Bar this afternoon, and I may hit other spots in the area as well – try The Vault for the first time, go over to Earnestine & Hazel’s to see Clarence, and maybe a stop by Cafe Pontotoc to see Michele. No shortage of places to go down here. Back tomorrow with more news. Hopefully more Downtown news than politics, but they way things are going, I’m making no promises.

Friday update #2: Wunderlich understands recruiting

Wunderlich Securities wants to attract the best and brightest candidates to work at their corporate headquarters here in Memphis. They want the smartest people in their office to serve their clients. To recruit the best of the best, they are moving their corporate HQ to Downtown Memphis, with 100 employees to work in a 28,000 square foot space in One Commerce Square.

When they bring in people from other cities to interview, those people currently see the Memphis airport, their current HQ and a hotel in the Poplar and 240 area, and miles of Interstate 240. It isn’t the best way to convince well-qualified people that Memphis is the place where they want to spend their life.

With the move Downtown, Wunderlich candidates will get to eat in Downtown restaurants and stay in a Downtown hotel. They’ll have time after hours to explore the area, the most walkable part of Memphis, on their own. Perhaps they’ll get taken to The Little Tea Shop for a meat-and-two lunch with Miss Su. Maybe they’ll get to catch a Redbirds game. Maybe they’ll walk down to Beale and discover Brad Birkedahl’s band, or whoever is cranking out the blues at the Blues Hall that evening. They could walk over to Bass Pro and do some shopping, or rent a bike and ride down to the Ghost River tap room. Maybe they could catch a trolley to South Main to visit the National Civil Rights Museum and then have dinner at Central BBQ.

Welcome to Downtown, Wunderlich. Good to see a company that “gets it” when it comes to selling a lifestyle to potential corporate employees.

The Bar-Kays and Confunkshun play the Cannon Center for Performing Arts tonight in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Juneteenth Memphis. Doors open at 8, show at 9.

South Main Sounds hosts a Summer Blockbuster Songwriter Night at 550 S. Main tonight, 7 to 9 PM, with Nightingail, Parker Hodges, R.J. Comer, and Adam Naylor.

Hear about the progress of the Memphis 3.0 master plan at one of these meetings next week:

Memphis Made Brewing Co. is teaming up with Goner Records and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music to brew Hop Swap IPA. This golden, hazy IPA with notes of citrus and fruit will help promote the Second Annual Soulsville Record Swap, to be held tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Stax Museum. Record dealers from Memphis, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, New York, and Minnesota will be on hand. There will be DJs all day long, and food trucks Arepa901, Sandwiches & More, and MEMpops. Admission to the swap is free, but if you want first pick there’s an early bird admission for $10 at 10 AM.

Memphis Made will have a pre-party for the event tonight from 7-10 PM in its taproom at 768 S. Cooper.

On Sunday, Memphis Made will present Hops for Pops, a special edition of its Community Concerts Sunday series. Live music by Incredible Universe and of course, plenty of beer. A portion of beer sales go to A Step Ahead Foundation.

Your Inner Yogi will offer Yoga for a Cause tomorrow, Saturday, June 17, at its location at 10 N. Second from 11 AM to 1 PM. Donations of dog-related items (leashes, toys, dog beds, etc.) are encouraged and will go to Streetdog Foundation. Certified instructor Caroline Miles will lead you through 108 Sun Salutations in observance of the summer solstice, bringing balance, gratitude, and positive energy. Yogis are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for the class to have time for parking and pre-class prep. There will be giveaways and pups will be there to adopt. YOGA!

Well, well, well.

Weekend! That’s it for now. I’ll be out at the usual places after work.

Friday morning update

Get there early if you’re going to see the Redbirds tonight. The first 1500 fans get a Stubby Clapp half-and-half jersey. Half the jersey features the current logo, and the other half has the classic logo from 1999-2002 when Clapp was a Redbirds player. Gates open at 6:00, with a 7:05 first pitch. Before the game there will be a block party in the plaza with live music by John Paul Keith and $2 beers.

Fourth Bluff Friday is back at RiverPlay tonight from 4 to 10. DJ Capital A will bring the music at 5:30, and then at 6:30 Memphop legends Iron Mic Coalition will take over. The Fuel food truck will be there, and TapBox will be back serving 10 craft beers. Memphicity Design will have a pop-up T-shirt shop there too, and there will be basketball, roller skating, and ping-pong as well.

Rent: The 20th Anniversary Tour comes to the Orpheum today through Sunday.

It is always nice to see a vacant building in the Downtown core being renovated into living space. Frank Corkren, a ServiceMaster employee, is redeveloping 134 Monroe into an apartment building. He was drawn to the location because of the proximity to his company’s new office building down the street on Second, as well as of all the great dining in the immediate area. He will keep one unit for himself and rent out the others using short-term rental services like Airbnb. What a great idea… think of the money he will make during Music Fest and BBQ Fest and Grizzlies playoff season.

Let’s Go Fishin’ is the theme at the Memphis Farmers Market this Saturday. The Market has vendors selling seafood from the Gulf as well as farm-raised catfish. From 10 to noon the Dixon will be at the kids’ table with a Scratha-Art koi fish craft that you can cut and glue and give to Dad on Father’s Day. Live music by Andrew Cabigao 8:30-10, Joe Johnson 10-11, and Amaris 11-12:30. The Market is held under the pavilion every Saturday at Front and G.E. Patterson from 7 AM to 1 PM.

Cordova’s new craft brewery, Meddlesome Brewing Co., scheduled to open June 30, is already garnering attention for the name of one of its beers, 201 Hoplar. It generated what the Memphis Flyer’s Bruce V accurately described as a “kerfluffle” on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, with some finding the reference to the infamous Downtown jail inappropriate. I personally see nothing wrong with it. I was checking @WooPigBrewey yesterday to keep up with beer news from my home state of Arkansas, and I see that North Little Rock’s Diamond Bear brewery has re-released a beer called “Stripper Sweat.” I wonder if feminists in the LR metro are up in arms over that name.

LUNCHBOXeats sent out their Father’s Day brunch menu if you’re looking for somewhere to take Dad. 10 AM to 3 PM.

The Rusty Pieces play the Flying Saucer this evening from 6 to 9.

That’s it for now. Off to work, possibly another post at lunchtime.

Thursday update: Help create Great Streets, Rizzo’s goes Italian for a day and more

BikePedMemphis’s work on the Great Streets Project is underway, and they are putting out a call for volunteers. This project will create a bike path from the river to Midtown, create areas that protect cyclists and pedestrians from traffic, and create pedestrian promenades where people can lounge or eat. They are looking for volunteers for morning and afternoon shifts next week, June 19-23. Volunteers will be needed to assemble IKEA furniture, paint streets, and assist with litter pickup. If you want to volunteer, email Emily Rooker at erooker@urbanartcommission.org and let her know your hours of availability.

On Saturday, June 24 they will have a massive Great Streets Volunteer Build Day from 8 AM to 1:30 PM to put the finishing touches on the project. If you can’t volunteer during the week due to work, the 24th could be your day.

After the work is done, it will be time to celebrate with a Street Party for Great Streets on the Main Street Mall from Peabody Place to Gayoso on Tuesday, June 27. There will be live music, games, and sidewalk sales from businesses along that block. That same day, hundreds of pedestrian and bike experts will be in town for the conference of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals.

Rizzo’s is going Italian for an evening on Tuesday, June 20 from 6:30 to 10 PM. Everyone has that one Italian mom in the neighborhood who prepares delicious dishes from the old country. Pam Conte was that Italian mom for Chef Michael Patrick. Join Pam and Michael as they serve a four-course dinner made from recipes passed down through La Familia. Cost is $60.

Cruisin’ Heavy, with special guest Mike Posner, is the featured entertainment at tonight’s Peabody rooftop party. $15 to get in, ladies and hotel guests free before 7. Your admission includes a buffet of catfish nuggets with house-made tartar sauce and warm mini-pretzels with honey mustard. If you’re in VIP you have a second buffet of carved Jack Daniel’s glazed tenderloin, garlic mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and watermelon wedges. Tonight’s drink specials will be a honey margarita and Backwoods blackberry moonshine.

It’s all-inclusive night at the Redbirds – a special $20 ticket lets you walk up to any concession stand and get burgers, hot dogs, chips and cheese, popcorn, and small sodas. It’s also Thirsty Thursday with select draft beers $2. First pitch is 7:05 and Colorado Springs is the opponent.

The Memphis Second Line Jazz Band will lead a parade from Memphis Park on Front Street to RiverPlay on Riverside Drive tonight at 5:30. Following that there will be a Heavy Metal Skate Party with DJ The Hook-Up from 6 to 8 at RiverPlay.

Trent Tomlinson kicks off the KIX (see what I did there) on Beale Concert Series in Handy Park tonight at 7:30. These concerts are all-ages and free to attend.

Clayborn Reborn is partnering with On Location: Memphis to bring a series of 15 films to Clayborn Temple this summer. The first is tonight. Fruitvale Station is a critically acclaimed film about a Bay Area resident who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family and strangers on the last day of 2008. Prior to the movies there will be block parties outside including local vendors, food trucks and a DJ. The block parties and movies are free and will include a discussion by an expert curator.

Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has been suspended for five ACC games as a result of the investigation into an escort scandal involving his players. If anyone is interested in learning to become a web developer, this bundle currently being offered for $49 by Mashable looks like a great value. You’ll learn HTML5, the language of web pages; CSS3, the language of the look and feel of web pages; and JavaScript, the language of dynamic client-side web pages. You’ll also learn MySQL, a popular flavor of the SQL database query language. You’ll learn popular programming languages like PHP and Python. Plus there are extras like an intro to cloud computing. These are the very tools (except Python, which I have never used) I work with in my day job as a web developer.
