July 4 update

Kenneth Lofton Jr. put up 21 points and 13 rebounds as the Grizzlies beat the Philadelphia 76ers 94-92 to open NBA Summer League last night. Next game: vs. Oklahoma City Wednesday at 6 PM on NBAtv. It’s likely to be a first look at Chet Holmgren, picked second by the Thunder in the 2022 draft, who missed all of last season.

Today is National Barbecue Day. If you’re not grilling out at home, Central BBQ at St. Martin and Butler (behind the civil rights museum) is my recommendation. Get a half order of BBQ nachos and an order of smoked wings. Blues City Cafe at Second and Beale is always a good bet too. “The Best Meal on Beale” combo platter (ribs & catfish with sides) is the way to go there.

I love a good Caesar salad as much as anyone but July 4 is an unfortunate day to celebrate National Caesar Salad Day. Nothing green belongs on a plate today.

The 2023 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is today.

  • Women’s contest: 9:45 AM Central, ESPN app and espn.com

That’s it for today’s post. My plan is to be at Bardog at 8 AM. I’ll wander over to Blind Bear when it opens at 3. Happy Fourth. Back tomorrow.
