Monday update

This blog is all about getting the word out about the achievements and upcoming events of others. As a rule, I don’t like to toot my own horn on here. But, I hope that just this once, you’ll indulge me. Because I said something pretty profound on Facebook Saturday afternoon.

AI is the opposite of E, I, E, I, O.

I mean, think about it. Let’s review the song:

Old McDonald had a farm,
E, I, E, I, O!
And on that farm he had some ducks,
E, I, E, I, O!

With a quack, quack here,
And a quack, quack there,
Here a quack,
There a quack,
Everywhere a quack, quack,

Old McDonald had a farm,
E, I, E, I, O!

E, I, E, I, O is all about gleaning knowledge and wisdom from a non-human resource. But it’s a resource we didn’t create: the animals.

Whereas, through artificial intelligence, we glean knowledge and wisdom through a resource we absolutely did create: computers.

So I stand by what I said. AI is the opposite of E, I, E, I, O.

Can you imagine the day EIEIO is the answer to the daily Wordle? That’ll stump everyone. Except AI, probably.

On to the news… are you in the service industry? You have a Halloween party to go to tonight from 6 to 10… but you have to register first (click the Tickets link in the Facebook listing), to be on the list they check at the door. The party is at Lux Lounge, the downstairs event room of the new Curry N Jerk location. It’s on Monroe between Second and B.B. King.

Ya know, they say there’s no such thing as a free lunch… I wonder what Lux Lounge’s angle is here? They’re gonna build a huge database of service industry workers, particularly Downtown ones, with contact info and current position held. There’s a lot of value in that.

There’s a trunk-or-treat for kids at Juvenile Court on Washington Avenue this evening from 5 to 7.

RIP Percy Norris, legendary Rendezvous server.

Annual reminder: If there is a restaurant you KNOW you want to try during Downtown Dining Week (November 6-12, 2023), go ahead and call and make reservations NOW, even if that restaurant has not published its DDW menu yet. The best time slots will fill up quickly. This is especially true this year, with DDW and the annual COGIC convention overlapping.

Todd Demers of Channel 3 Weather is saying we could see 15 MPH wind gusts from the north around 4 tomorrow afternoon. Keep that in mind when planning your Halloween costume. It’s gonna be cold! Predicted lows are 33 tonight and 30 tomorrow night.

Even with their star point guard on the bench, the Memphis Tigers put away Lane College 106-49 in an exhibition yesterday. Next up: vs. LeMoyne-Owen Tuesday at FedExForum, 7 PM.

Congrats to the Green Beetle’s food truck on its recent 100 on its health inspection.

The NBA’s in-season tournament tips off Friday. The Grizzlies will hit the road to play Portland in a tournament game that night at 9.

Tonight the Grizzlies host Dallas at home at 7 PM. TV: Bally Sports

Daylight Saving Time ends Saturday night. Get ready to turn the clocks back an hour.

That’s all for now. Possibly back tomorrow with more news, if I don’t take a day off.
