Get your winter veggies, Halloween on the Island, PBR Art, and more

As most of my readers know, I am a huge fan of fresh produce, which is why I visit the Memphis Farmers Market most every Saturday. However, the Market season ends November 19; what to do after then? Never fear, Bring It Food Hub is here! The hub has announced its Deep Winter Subscription for the January 10-March 3 time period. Subscribers will get a weekly $20 bag of local produce and grains. Don’t worry, it won’t just be 8 bags of kale! The Memphis area has a relatively warm winter climate, allowing farmers to produce diverse crops including onion scallions, kale, collards, parsley, cilantro, swiss chard, carrots, radishes, beets, head lettuce, salad mix, arugula, bok choi, turnips, cauliflower, celery, spinach, and broccoli.

You can also add on items including eggs, bread, cheese, and coffee. The hub also offers a meat subscription through Marmilu Farms. Another purchase you can make is a Pay It Forward Bag that allows the hub to donate fresh, local produce to those experiencing food insecurity. Visit www.bringitfoodhub.com to learn more.

Halloween on the Island happens Monday, October 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This is a great place to take the kids for Halloween, as Mud Island River Park gets a spooky makeover for the day. There will be trick-or-treating on the River Walk, costume contests, Sparkman the Magician, mini train rides, hay rides, and games. $5 per person entry includes a ride over to the park on the monorail.

Just a reminder that perhaps the most important art show in the history of South Main Trolley Night happens at Circuitous Succession, 500 S. Second tonight from 5 to 10. PBR-inspired work by 10 artists will be on display, and PBR will be served to guests over 21.

A permit application shows new images of what the developers of Old Dominick Distillery want the place to look like on the inside and out. The distillery will open on South Front in the Front Street Chicken District (credit @Kerry901 for the name) in 2017.

Our city’s tallest skyscraper is falling further into disrepair. 100 N. Main, the tower at the corner of Main and Adams, faces foreclosure and receivership.

The High Cotton taproom has announced specials now through Sunday. $3.50 pints of Oktoberfest, $8 growler fills of Oktoberfest, and kill the keg all day Saturday. Seems like they really want to get rid of their Oktoberfest before the end of October! Is this a brewery superstition, like it’s bad luck to still have your Christmas tree up on January 1?

The Memphis International Auto Show happens at the Cook Convention Center this weekend.

That’s it for now. Off to work. I will definitely be checking out Circuitous Succession this evening.

Sinners for Saints schedule, Farmers Market, and more (Thur update #2)

Do you have dozens of kids knocking on your door every October 31 trick-or-treating? Do you wish you didn’t? The Memphis Farmers Market can help with that! At the Market you can pick up fresh squash, tomatoes, and peppers to put in trick-or-treaters’ bags. Do that and you will soon develop a reputation as “that weird house where they hand out vegetables instead of candy” and all the kids will skip you in 2017.

Kids: There’s something at the Farmers Market for you too! Is there already a house on the block where people hand out healthy snacks (or crap like toothpaste, dental floss, etc. There was a house like that when I was a kid) instead of candy? Shop the Market for farm-fresh eggs to throw at that house late at night!

Goblin Goodies is the theme at the Memphis Farmers Market this Saturday, October 29. Kids and adults alike are invited to give everyone a preview of their Halloween costumes at the Market. Be sure to get your picture taken, and the winner (who will be notified by email) will get $10 in market tokens!

For the kids, trick-or-treat stations can be found around the Market tomorrow. They can also create a Pumpkin Patch scene or a trick-or-treat bag at the crafts booth.

Live music at Saturday’s market will include Andrew Cabigao 8:30-10:00, Amaris 10:00-11:00, and Amber Dunn 11:00-12:30. Nonproft Donate Life America will be there from 8:00 to 12:30, providing information to help increase the number of donated organs, eyes and tissue available for transplant to help save and heal lives. The Market happens every Saturday through November 19 7 AM-1 PM under the pavilion at the corner of Front and G.E. Patterson.

The schedule has been released for Saturday night’s Sinners for Saints Halloween Ball II, which I will say once again is the BEST Halloween party in Downtown Memphis, drawing nearly a thousand people. It is also a great way to help others, because all proceeds from the party benefit the Church Health Center. Tickets are nearing a sellout, so if you like what you see below, go ahead and purchase yours. It’s very possible there will not be any tickets left by Saturday!

In the main room, Super Brad kicks things off from 9:00 to 10:00. The Super 5 take over from 10:00 to midnight, and at midnight it is time for the costume contest. Around 12:30 after the contest is over, The Dead Soldiers will perform. I don’t think I’ve heard The Dead Soldiers since the opening of the High Cotton taproom over two years ago!

In the back at Tad’s Indoor Trailer Park and Voodoo Lounge, Charvey Mac will play 10:00 to midnight, with a costume karaoke contest at 12:30. Ongoing throughout the evening will be the Amurica photo booth (9:00-1:00) and fortune tellers (9:00-midnight). I’m always down for some Charvey so I’ll be in the back for a while from 10 to 12.

The costume karaoke contest will be limited to 25 participants. Costumes are not required, but will be considered as part of your performance. First song choice is up to you. Lil’ Eggroll will choose five semi-finalists, who will perform a second song selected by the “Wheel of Death.” Crowd applause will select the two finalists, who will be able to pick their own final song selection. Crowd applause will determine the winner.

If you want to get started on your Halloween celebration even earlier, go down to the most haunted location in Downtown Memphis, Earnestine & Hazel’s, tonight from 9 to 11 for a performance by the South Side Supper Club.

Art 101.2 happens tonight at 101 S. Main from 6 to 8. This will be a reception highlighting local artists Amelia Briggs, Birdcap, Chloe York, and Felipe. There will be live music and complimentary appetizers. Learn more about The 101 here. Email Chris at the101memphis@gmail.com if you have an idea, programming, or pop-up market that might be a good fit for The 101.

For the third year in a row, a poll of NBA general managers has named Tony Allen the toughest player in the league.

McEwen’s made the CA’s list of Best Bets for a Southern favorite: greens.

That’s it for now. Out at the Silly Goose for happy hour after work.

Thursday morning update

Last night I had a great late-night snacking idea that I thought I would pass on. Monday night on the way home, I got a tub of Pancho’s white cheese dip and a bag of Tostitos Scoops. I ate about half of the cheese dip then put the other half in the fridge. Tuesday night I had something else for dinner, then last night I thought, “I don’t have to stop by City Market tonight. I have the leftover cheese dip and chips to eat.”

However, I went back to City Market anyway.

In order to make my snacking more interesting, I bought a red bell pepper and a fresh jalapeno. I cut them into slices and dipped them in the white cheese dip, in addition to the chips. Yum!

A while back The Brass Door had curry night, where you got a bowl of spicy curry along with rice for $10. Yesterday I got an email from Diamond Dave that they’re bringing it back. He is not sure with what frequency it will happen, but it will be back tonight, Thursday, October 27 for sure. Dave cooks the curry in a pressure cooker and (don’t hold me to this) I seem to remember there being two types of curry.

Lawdy Mama’s Blues for the Cure comes to Handy Park tomorrow evening, Friday, October 28 from 6 to 9 PM. Live entertainment by Barbara Blue Band, along with special guest Memphis Women of the Blues who will be throwing a Blues Party to welcome Saturday’s Race for the Cure to Downtown Memphis. Tomorrow is also the day of Chalking in Memphis where you can write the name of a survivor or the name of a loved one lost to breast cancer on Beale. Help Beale Street go Pink!

Look for light shows on the river starting this Friday! Every Friday at 8 Big River Crossing will host light shows on the Harahan Bridge to commemorate holidays and entertain Memphians and Arkansans.

Don’t worry, Justin Timberlake fans: JT will not be going to jail for the election booth selfie he took. Taking photos in the polling area is illegal and punishable by a 30-day jail sentence and a $50 fine. However, Shelby County DA Amy Weirich’s office has said the incident is not under investigation, nor do they plan on using their limited resources to start such an investigation. Good deal. I would’ve thrown a napkin at Weirich if she had proceeded with such a frivolous court matter.

Dedric Lawson has come in at number 38 among NBC Sports’ top 100 college basketball players for this season.

Movie & Pizza Co. on Harbor Town Square has been bought by the owners of Pizza Pro across the river in Marion. The menu will be updated to use fresh crust rather than frozen, and the restaurant will be renamed Bluff City Pizza.

I’ll probably be back later today with a second update, if Farmers Market news for the week hits my mailbox. Off to work for now.

Wed update #2

Opening Night entertainment has been announced for tonight’s Grizzlies game at FedExForum. Legendary Memphis rappers 8-Ball and MJG will take the court pre-game for a performance. At halftime, legendary soul performer William Bell will be on stage, backed by the Hi Rhythm Session. From 5 to 7 outside on the plaza there will be pre-game festivities, with face painting, balloon artists, the Grizzline drum section, and Garry Goin and his band (6:00-6:45).

Follow @GrizzliesPR on Twitter, a new account for Grizzlies news, notes, and stats.

For my friends in the service industry who might be looking for a new position, Bass Pro at the Pyramid is hosting a food and beverage job fair Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27, 1 to 5 PM both days. The fair will be in the Trophy Room in Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill. Servers, bussers, food runners, and food and beverage admin are some of the open positions, and there are both full- and part-time opportunities. They are looking for upbeat, positive, team-oriented candidates with great customer service skills. Come dressed to impress, and be sure to bring an updated copy of your resume. Call 901-291-8207 to get in touch with HR or go to www.basspro.com/careers.

Congressman Steve Cohen is hosting his annual Veterans’ Day luncheon at BRIDGES, 477 N. Fifth, from 11 AM to 1 PM Friday, November 11. The Congressman will recognize the service of veterans in his 8th annual luncheon, and will discuss legislation and issues affecting veterans. Caseworkers from Cohen’s office will be on site to provide assistance with government agencies to veterans who need it. Interstate BBQ will be served. RSVP to 901-544-4131 by Wednesday, November 9.

Whoa! Arby’s is taking a stab at a venison sandwich and Tennessee is among the states in which the trial will take place. The sandwiches will be 100% deer meat, with top and bottom round steaks from the hind quarter of the deer.

I’ve learned of a couple more events that will be happening in conjunction with South Main Trolley Night this Friday evening. One is LeMonsters, with monster drawings, crafts, and refreshments at the Hyde Gallery at 477 S. Main. This exhibit features 130 drawings by LeBonheur patients, and reimagined by Memphis College of Art students, faculty, and alumni. One of the monster sculptures is over 8 feet tall.

Meanwhile, over at South Main Book Juggler at 548 S. Main there will be a signing of My Memphis View, a book of photographs by Mary-Ellen Kelly. It’s a keepsake collection of images of the 901.

Save the date: The Mockstrosity Tour comes to The New Daisy Sunday, April 2, 2017. This event will feature Mac Sabbath, Metalachi (the world’s first and only heavy metal mariachi band), and Okilly Dokilly. Tickets are $18-22 and the event is 18 and up.

The Silly Goose has announced their Halloween costume contest for Saturday, October 29. Every 30 minutes from 10 PM to 2 AM, a $100 gift card will be awarded to the bar favorite costume. The event will be hosted by DJ Cody.

I’ll be out at the Goose for happy hour for work. That’s it for now.

Steal a base, steal a taco

Last night was the opening night of the Chicago Cubs vs. Cleveland Indians in the World Series. I don’t really have a dog in this hunt but I’m inclined to pull for the Cubs because I have more friends who are Cubs fans, including Max from Max’s Sports Bar. However, I definitely don’t mind what one Indian did last night: Francisco Lindor stole a base, triggering the Steal a Base, Steal a Taco promotion at Taco Bell. On November 2 from 2-6 PM, everyone gets one free Doritos Locos Taco as a result of Lindor’s accomplishment.

It’s opening night! The Grizzlies play the first game of the 2016-17 regular season vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight at 7. The first 10,000 fans get a Grind City T-shirt.

Fourth Bluff Friday returns to Memphis Park Friday, October 28 from 4:30 to 9:00. This is the rain date for a Fourth Bluff Friday canceled earlier in the month. Feel free to bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. There will be live music, several food trucks, mobile beer vendor The Tapbox, and games for children and families.

Tickets are now on sale to see famed astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Orpheum on February 13. The evening’s lecture will be titled “An Astrophysicist Goes to the Movies.” The lecture will be an entertaining review of movies like Star Wars and Frozen and The Martian, looking at all the science those movies got wrong as well as some they got right. The talk incorporates recent films as well as classics that you may not know had any science at all.

From Memphis Magazine: Chef Ana Gonzalez, a native of Colombia, invigorates Bleu’s menu with Latin flavors and an eye for presentation. Gonzalez is looking to expose her guests to foods they have not previously tried, different ingredients, and different cultures.

In case you haven’t been paying ANY attention to the news the last 24 hours, Justin Timberlake came to Memphis to cast his vote in the general election. Unfortunately, he took a selfie at the voting booth, which is against the law. Is the DA really going to file charges? This is the most BS, unnecessary reason for a court proceeding I have heard in a little over a year.

In other voting news, former Secretary of State Colin Powell has admitted he’s voting for Hillary Clinton. He’s not terribly excited about it, but the alternative is unthinkable. You and I see eye to eye, Mr. Secretary.

Just for fun: Important 20th century newspaper headlines rewritten as clickbait blog post titles

We now have an opening date for the Kroger on Union in Midtown: Monday, November 28.

Lineup has been announced for Singer-Songwriter Night #40 at South Main Sounds, 550 S. Main, during Trolley Night on Friday. Faith Ruch, Vanessa Winter and Rusty Graber will join Memphis legend Delta Joe Sanders to provide the live music for you that evening.

That’s it, off to work, another post later today most likely.

Tue update #2: Jersey Boys, election watch party, Lord T & Eloise and more

Jersey Boys the musical begins its 2016 run at the Orpheum tonight, with shows running through Sunday. The musical is the story of The Four Seasons, who sold 175 million records before any of them turned 30. The band’s hits including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Oh! What a Night” will be performed. This show did big business when it played here several years ago. Some of my friends enjoyed it so much that they went back and saw it a second time.

Hot Rods on Beale happens tonight from 6 to 10. The American Muscle Car Club and the Perfect Nemesis Car Club will have their autos on display.

Did you know Aldo’s Pizza Pies has a VIP text club? Text ALDOS1 to 51660 to join. Every Friday a member of the text club is selected to receive a $25 gift card.

This morning I asked if any Downtown spots would have the November 8 general election results on. I’ve already learned of one venue. The High Cotton taproom at 598 Monroe will host Vote to #EndAlz Election Night Watch Party that evening from 5 to 9. $10 donation includes your first beer; kids 10 and under get in free. All beers after your first will be discounted. Cash and credit card will be accepted. Learn more about the Alzheimer’s Association, look through silent auction items, and watch the election results. “The candidates may not be our first choice,” reads the Facebook event listing (NO SHIT!!!!), “but we can at least have a drink while we Vote to #ENDALZ.”

The company I work for does a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association every June, and I can tell you this is a GREAT cause to support. Email taproom@highcottonbrewing.com if you have items you would like to donate to the silent auction. Maybe I should donate that gong I won at the Blind Bear final poker table back in 2014. I was going to give it to the BBQ team, but really, what is a BBQ team going to do with a gong? It would just be one more nuisance at load-in and load-out.

Useful for those hosting Halloween parties: Turn a pumpkin into an ice bucket

Hallowed Be Thy Rave, a frightful dance party of epic proportions, comes to the New Daisy Friday night. 18 and over, tickets $20-35, doors open at 8, music starts at 9. Music includes Lord T & Eloise, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, SKA FACE Al Kapone Music, Chaperone, Crown Vox, The Aristocrunk Sound System, plus special guests The Girls from the Night Before, Lady DooMoi and many more.

Tin Roof is having a Killer Carnival Saturday, October 29 with a costume contest, tattoo booth, drink specials, and live music. The costume contest winner will be announced at 9, so you would have time to do this one and still make it to costume contests elsewhere Downtown. First prize is Grizzlies suite tickets, second prize is a Michelob Ultra bicycle, and third prize is a Tin Roof swag bag.

Weather update from MemphisWeather.net:

This time of year I will take above-average temperatures any chance I can get!

Latino Memphis has everything you need to know for their Day of the Dead fiesta at the Cadre Building this Friday – how to dress, where to park, and more.

That’s it for now. I’ll be out at the Blind Bear after work. Back tomorrow.

Flash mob to show support for “the nasty woman” plus more Tuesday news

Question for Downtown bar owners and managers who read this blog: Do any of you plan on showing the election results, with sound, on Tuesday, November 8? Email me at paul@paulryburn.com if that’s your plan and I will get the word out.

The The Nasty Woman Flashmob of Memphis is gathering at Big River Crossing Sunday, November 6 at 3 PM. Men, women, and children are invited, but here’s the thing – YOU MUST WEAR A PANTSUIT or something resembling a pantsuit. The event is to show support for Hillary Clinton and only positive vibes are requested.

The shops, galleries, and restaurants of South Main will stay open late Friday for October Trolley Night. If you’re a member of the SMA there’s a party for you with the Rusty Pieces in the former Onix space. There will be live music up and down the street, Andrew Cabigao at the Green Beetle, South Main Songwriter Night at South Main Sounds, and more. Great chance to mingle with your neighbors.

If you like to check out books to read at any Memphis Public Library branch, note that all branches will be closed this Friday, October 28 for staff training.

From Skillet: How to pair wine with Halloween candy. I guess beer will be next. Allow me to help. Tootsie Rolls pair well with PBR. Kit Kats pair well with PBR. Hershey’s Kisses pair well with PBR. Candy corn pairs well with… nothing, candy corn sucks. Peppermints pair well with PBR.

Usually the way the weather works at the end of October is that temperatures remain warm and pleasant up to a day or two before either Halloween or the Saturday preceding it (which is the big Halloween party night), and then the temperature drops into the 50s. That was a concern for me this year, because my costume cost $19.95 and as you can imagine the material is quite thin… was worrying I would freeze to death walking to and from Sinners for Saints Halloween Ball II. It looks like I have nothing to worry about; the forecast says we’re looking at highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s on Saturday the 29th. If anything that’s almost TOO warm! Then again, warm weather encourages slutty female costumes, so maybe there’s no such thing as too warm.

Girl Scout Cookie Cereal will soon be a thing.

Slippery Slope: Study finds little lies lead to bigger ones. This is VERY true. Ask me how I know this.

The Firestone on Madison near Camillia caught fire this morning. Part of Madison had to be closed off.

That’s it for now. Off to work. Possibly another post later today.

Monday update

If you’ve thought about running with the Salty Dogs but have never got around to doing it, tonight would be a perfect night to give them a try. The Salty Dogs are a group that meets at Bardog Tavern every Monday at 7 PM and goes for a run together. Afterward they return to Bardog, where there are food and drink specials for them in the Underdog, the downstairs area. There is no cost and anyone is welcome to join.

So why is this week an especially good one? Because they are running from Bardog to the newly-open Harahan Bridge. If you missed the opening of Big River Crossing Saturday, this is a great chance to check it out!

Congratulations to Memphis Tigers sophomore Dedric Lawson. He was named the Pre-Season American Athletic Conference Player of the Year for men’s basketball today.

If you haven’t followed Dan Rather on Facebook, I strongly recommend that you do. The 84-year-old is no longer beholden to corporate media and is free to speak his mind.

There will be a Downtown Safety Meeting this Thursday, October 27, at 6 PM at the Halloran Centre. Representatives of the Memphis and Shelby County Crime Commission, City Council and Memphis Police Department will be present. You can help by letting MPD know of existing cameras that capture images of activity on sidewalks and streets. You can also help by reporting street light outages to MLGW, and by calling non-emergency number 545-COPS when you see suspicious activity. And, of course, you can help by coming to Thursday’s meeting and being an active participant.

Immediately following the safety meeting, an SMA committee will meet about forming a Neighborhood Watch to address safety concerns in the community. The public is welcome to be a part of that meeting as well.

Very happy to see them putting a Neighborhood Watch together. When I’m walking back from Max’s Sports Bar after dark, I’m always a little wary of the part of Main between Talbot and MLK. It will be nice to know that someone is around, looking out for potential trouble.

Loflin Yard will become Loflin Graveyard Saturday night, October 29 from 9 to midnight. DJ Willow will play the Coach House, and there will be spooky specials and a costume contest.

Being single is now a disability, according to the World Health Organization. I guess that means I have a long-term disability? I wonder if I qualify for money for that, so I can trade this “job” thing in for a “goes to Bardog every morning at 8 when it opens” thing.

Congratulations to my friend Angela, whose company Copeland Coaching turns 3 today. If your job search is not going well, or if you want to learn how to fast-track your career or jump from one career path to another, you can’t go wrong with her coaching services. She is the best!

That’s it for now. Although unusual for a Monday, I’m going to do Blind Bear happy hour after work. Back later today or tomorrow with more news.

As an American citizen you have a responsibility…

… and that is to post a photo of your “I voted” sticker to Facebook. Congratulations to many of you who carried out your duty yesterday. Those who drafted the Constitution would be so proud.

Remember, you can vote at ANY Shelby County early voting location if you early vote. Got stuff to do after work and on the weekends? Vote on your lunch hour. Abundant Grace Fellowship Church at 1574 E. Shelby Drive will be getting a visit from me this week or next.

River Arts Fest continues today in the South Main district. Although the festival is only three days long, its impact is felt year round with a variety of arts programs in the schools.

Okay. I have a question. I understand the selling of beer tickets at festivals, to control underage drinking. But what is the point of selling food tickets? I cannot think of a good reason, other than knowing that some tickets will go unused, resulting in pure profit for the festival. It’s a hassle and River Arts Fest needs to stop it. I can’t think of another Downtown festival that makes its attendees jump through hoops to get something to eat.

I led off at Bardog yesterday. Throughout the day I type notes into Evernote on my phone so I know what I need to talk about in the next blog post. Here are two notes from yesterday:

“Suburbanites fresh market buy 1 get 1 free ahintuna”

“Mellow mushroom has PBR on tap. Thx. Bardog.”

So there you go. I hope that was useful information.

After a walk through River Arts Fest I stopped at my “home away from home on the south side,” Max’s Sports Bar. Max understands how to provide coasters for his customers.

photo-oct-22-3-58-40-pm

I cringed as people put Miller Lites on these beautiful coasters.

While at Max’s, I noticed some cards on the bar and took a photo of one. YOGA!

photo-oct-22-1-38-51-pm

photo-oct-22-1-39-04-pm

Circuitous Succession gallery at 500 S. Second has started offering yoga classes every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. They are offering 20% off your first purchase, and they also offer private lessons, monthly workshops, and yoga parties. Don’t forget that this gallery is also hosting perhaps the most important art exhibit in the South Main District this year Friday night, 2016 PBR Art Showcase Memphis. Suggestion for the gallery: If you can come up with an event that combines yoga and PBR, I would consider taking a yoga class for the first time since 2003.

I also scored a primo Thanksgiving invite while at Max’s. As many of you know, I work for the company that sanctions the card game bridge in North America. Our fall national tournament begins on Thanksgiving Day, so I have to be on call in case anything needs to be done with the website. Because of that, Thanksgiving invitations are much appreciated! Looking forward to English stuffing!

After that I headed north to the Blind Bear, where B-RAD was working a rare Saturday shift. He told me that one of my former students had been at his bar and said I was mean. I bet I know what class that student took.

In the spring of 1997 I taught two Tuesday-Thursday Concepts of Numbers classes. That is the easiest math class you could take for college credit at the time at the U of M. Three or four weeks into the class they had their first test. The afternoon class did well, averaging 81, a low B.

The morning class, however, averaged a 58. The day I handed their tests back, I pretty much went off on them. I told them they averaged an F on what was a relatively easy test. I told them that with a few exceptions, it was obvious that they did next to nothing to study or prepare for the test. I then told them that I was absolutely not curving the grades and it was time for many of them to decide if they were going to get serious about the class or go over to the admin building and drop it while they still had time. So yeah, I was mean. I also had no more test averages below the mid 70s from that class after that.

By the way, I was nice most of the time. There was one time I let my students talk me into moving the date of a test because many of them had tickets to a Grateful Dead concert. Three months later, Jerry Garcia passed away. I was glad they got to see the band one last time.

After it became clear that the Arkansas-Auburn game was something I did not want to watch, I got a Puu Puu Platter from Yao’s and took my “halftime” nap. I woke up about 1 and went back to the Blind Bear. My friend Katie Mac was sitting at the bar. I tapped her on the shoulder (or as some would say, I touched her in an extremely offensive manner three to four times. INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING!) to say hello, and she scooted over to make room at the bar. Katie is the organizer of the Halloween costume contest at Sinners for Saints this coming Saturday. “Want to see the list of prizes and gift cards we’ve had donated for the costume contest?” she asked. I said sure and she handed me her phone.

I kept scrolling and scrolling and scrolling… I thought I would never get to the end of the list. If you end up being a winner in the costume contest at Sinners for Saints, you are going to SCORE on the prizes. “Practically every place I have mentioned on my blog this past year is on this list,” I thought. Still searching for a costume idea? Might want to consider going as one of our 2016 fallen rock icons, Prince or David Bowie. $200 CASH will be given to be best representation of one of those figures. The organizers are telling me tickets are selling at a faster pace than last year, and the event did sell out last year, so waiting until the day of to purchase tickets would probably be a mistake.

I didn’t make it to the opening of Big River Crossing yesterday, but a friend who is something of an expert in biking (he owns so many bikes that his car barely fits in the garage) said it was first class, all the way. The Harahan Bridge looks beautiful all lit up. So nice to have a view of it from my apartment!

My request for vacation on my birthday (Friday, November 18) has been approved, so I am going to try and organize another group outing to 25 cent martini lunch at Felicia Suzanne’s if anybody wants in.

Time to put on my “I  Sunday School” shirt and walk over to D-RANKS with B-RAD at the Blind Bear. I am undecided whether I will go back to River Arts Fest for a second day. The food vendor choices seemed subpar compared to previous years; just the usual carnival fare plus a food truck or two. I do want to visit some of the artist vendors though, so I will probably go back. That’s it for now. I hope you enjoy your Sunday Fun Day as much as I plan to!

Saturday update

If you’re planning on attending the Big River Crossing opening today, there is an attraction you won’t want to miss. The Union Pacific Railroad #844 steam locomotive traveled 1200 miles one way to take part in the celebration. The locomotive will be at the intersection of East Carolina and S. B.B. King Blvd. (Third) from noon to 3 today.

The Life-Changer Frank Mastriciano, former strength specialist for the Memphis Tigers’ men’s basketball team, talked to John Martin on ESPN 92.9 about why he parted ways with Josh Pastner. He did not mince words to say the least. He compared himself to a high-end auto mechanic trying to have a conversation with someone who is just learning to arrange flowers. Daaaamn.

The 12th annual Stumblin’ Santa pub crawl has been announced for Saturday, December 3. The idea is that you dress up as Santa (or Ms. Claus, a Christmas tree, a reindeer, you get the idea) and stumble to bars all over Downtown with other Santas. And there will be many other Santas. In recent years attendance has broken the 1200 mark. Meeting place is the Flying Saucer at 7 that evening. This is a toy drive for Porter-Leath. Participants are asked to bring a toy to donate to children, with the biggest need being toys for kids under 5. Here are some toy ideas from Porter-Leath. Although the pub crawl is big, Porter-Leath needs 6000+ toys to meet the needs of all the kids the serve, so don’t be shy about bringing more than one. Ho ho ho! (And that’s a reason to do the pub crawl; there will be plenty of hoes in Slutty Santa outfits.)

Good news from the MemphisWeather.net blog: The outlook for this winter has been issued and Memphis is in the “warmer” and “drier” range. That is where we want to be! Ideally I’d like highs in the winter months to stay in the 50s and above, except for one freezing-cold snowstorm (which ideally would happen overnight on a Sunday night) that is bad enough to cause most offices to close but not bad enough that Bardog fails to open at 8 AM.

The Flyer has a Q&A with Nicholas Oyler, the new city manager of bikeway and pedestrian program. He brings experiences with walkable neighhorhoods in Germany and Texas to our city.

If you don’t understand why popular sites like Twitter were down for a while yesterday, read this: What is a denial of service (DoS) attack? I have to explain this to people all the time. It’s not that the servers were hacked, but that they were so flooded with requests that it takes time to handle and get everything back to normal.

From the Daily Beast: Taxi war turns tourist mecca Acapulco bloody. There are some bad hombres down in Mexico. One of them already escaped to Memphis. Better hurry up and build that wall, Trump!

This weather this time of year… it’s beautiful, but impossible to dress for. It’s going to be sunny with a high of 69 today. That’s T-shirt and shorts weather. However, if I watch the Arkansas-Auburn game at Max’s Sports Bar, I will be getting out of there around 9, and the temperature will have dropped into the 50s by then. If I were bar-hopping all day, I would just take one of my Pink Pig fleece jackets with me and hang it on the back of my seat, but River Arts Fest complicates things. I’ll be walking around and possibly buying stuff to take home. I don’t want one more thing in my hands.

No Farmers Market for me today. Bardog will be my first stop, then down to RiverArtsFest.
