Aldo’s Pizza Pies to occupy a portion of Barboro Flats’ ground-floor commercial space. Plus more news in this rambling snow day post

I’ve known about this for a little while but couldn’t say anything, but since Barboro Flats just Facebooked it, I’m assuming it’s safe to blog about now… Aldo’s Pizza Pies, the new business to be opened by Aldo of Bardog Tavern fame, will occupy part of the ground-floor commercial space at Barboro Flats.

Barboro Flats is the new apartment building at Main and Gayoso, in what was formerly “the big hole in the ground.” They’ve been leasing apartments for months now, but so far have not had any ground-floor commercial tenants. Last year, I had heard Maria’s Cantina might be going in there, but I guess that fell through.

Aldo wants to bring real New York-style pizza to Downtown Memphis. He previously had a space picked out for the pizza parlor on Main just north of Union. Although I’ll have to walk a block farther to get pizza, I have to admit the Barboro decision is a good move… much more foot traffic on that block. Aldo is currently out of town on his honeymoon.

In other news, the snow day is going well. The netbook and I have moved on to the Second Street Branch Office, where I’m checking CNN’s site for updates about the situation in Egypt. Rumor has it that President Hosni Mubarak will step down tonight. As I was getting updates about this story on Twitter this morning, I thought to myself, if I were one of Mubarak’s close friends, I’d call him “Mubes.” “Yo Mubes, what up dawg.”

Here’s a link to an excellent article outlining why you should vote YES for city and county school district consolidation.

Poker players: Bar None has announced that poker night with Poker Jon will happen tonight at 7:30. Last night’s poker league night at Bardog had to be canceled due to the weather.

However, MPACT Memphis’ Small Beginnings Fund event, also scheduled for Bar None tonight, has been canceled due to the weather and will be rescheduled.

I decided we needed a reminder of summer, so I put the “Countdown to Tube Top Month” timer back on the right sidebar. Tube Top Month used to be June 1-June 30, but thanks to an excellent suggestion from a reader, it has been extended. It will begin 5 PM Friday of Memorial Day weekend, and end midnight of the first day back to work after the July 4 weekend. For those new to the blog, it’s a month-long celebration of the greatest women’s fashion item ever created, the tube top.

The Nuh-Uh Girl is on her way to the doctor with a bruised femur. She claims she injured her leg sledding last night, but I have a feeling she actually did it jumping over two people to get to the front of a buffet line. I guess this will put a damper on her dancing at Club Shadows this weekend.

Valentine’s Day gifts: Christine’s by Shelton Clothiers has $19 beautiful scarves. Shelton Clothiers has $19 neckties. No offense to Tom and Christine, but a note to future girlfriends out there: If you want to make sure that I break up with you, buy me a tie for Valentine’s Day. Or any other occasion.

Here’s one for the “things we have in Memphis that I never knew existed” department: Memphis Baseball Academy. They offer team rentals for team practice and pre-game hittin; pitching, hitting and fielding instruction; strength, speed and agility training; specialized camps and clinics; and special event rental. I learned about it in a press release from the Redbirds, saying that AutoZone park is hosting a baseball camp Saturday for Bellevue Baptist, and the academy is participating. Let’s hit some balls for Jesus!

Looking at the back page of the Memphis Flyer. The Silly Goose is advertising their happy hour with Magyn (actually, tonight it will be Jeannette). $2.75 fire sale draft and 30% off appetizers. Hey, I wonder where they got the idea to call their beer discount a “fire sale?”

Guess I’ll pack up and go home for a couple of hours. Will probably be back at the Second Street Branch Office around 4 for happy hour. May do poker night, either at Bar None or at Max’s, at 7.
